Amazon Kids+ is a paid, ad-free subscription of children’s books, audiobooks, videos, games, apps, music, podcasts and Alexa skills. Amazon Kids child profiles and the Parent Dashboard’s core time, schedule and content controls are available without paying for Kids+. Kids+ is most likely worth the cost when a child regularly uses its catalog across a compatible device; it is harder to justify when you only need parental controls or rarely use the included content.
What Amazon Kids+ includes
Amazon describes Kids+ as a curated, ad-free library for children, with books, audiobooks, videos, games, apps and other digital content. Its help documentation also lists music, podcasts and Alexa skills. The service is intended for children ages 3–12, although the exact catalog and features depend on the device and marketplace. Amazon’s overview explains the service and compatible hardware at What is Amazon Kids+?.
Supported access can include Kids tablets, regular Fire tablets, Kindle devices, Fire TV, Echo and adult Alexa-enabled tablets configured with a child profile. A title or feature available on one device may not appear on another, so check the specific device before assuming that the entire catalog is available everywhere.

Amazon executive Jon Lyon, who leads Kids+ content and business development, says, “We’re constantly refreshing our catalog and making sure that we keep delivering new titles that keep kids really excited.” That is Amazon’s description of its catalog process, not independent evidence about educational quality, learning outcomes or how often additions occur.

Amazon Kids versus Amazon Kids+: the important difference
The names are similar but describe different things. Amazon Kids is the child-profile and parental-control system. Amazon Kids+ is the optional paid content subscription that fills that profile with its own library.
Amazon says a parent can create an Amazon Kids child profile at no additional cost. Through the Parent Dashboard, a parent can set schedules and time limits, filter content by age, manage access and monitor activity. Communication features on supported devices are optional and must be enabled by the parent. Amazon’s explanations are available in What Is Amazon Kids? and Set parental controls with the Amazon Kids Parent Dashboard.
You therefore do not need Kids+ simply to create a restricted child account, limit screen time or manage which existing content a child can use. The subscription’s job is to provide the additional catalog.

Amazon’s October 2026 tablet announcement lists US starting prices of $7.99 per month for Prime members and $8.99 per month for non-Prime customers. These are starting prices in the United States, not a worldwide rate or a guarantee that every plan and promotion uses the same price. Check the price shown in your Amazon marketplace before subscribing.
| Customer type | Starting monthly price | Simple 12-month equivalent | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prime member | $7.99 | $95.88 | US starting price stated by Amazon in October 2026 |
| Non-Prime customer | $8.99 | $107.88 | US starting price stated by Amazon in October 2026 |
The annual figures are the monthly prices multiplied by 12; they are not a separately quoted annual plan. Taxes, promotions, marketplace differences and future price changes can alter what you actually pay.
Do you need an Amazon Kids tablet?
No. Kids+ can run on a compatible device you already own, including supported Fire tablets, Kindle devices, Fire TV and Echo or Alexa-enabled hardware with a child profile. Buying a tablet is relevant only if your family also needs a device.

Those prices and dates come from Amazon’s announcement, New Amazon Kids Tablets take the guesswork out of screen time for parents. Verify live stock, delivery dates and current pricing before buying. The one-year subscription is an included term in the bundle, not proof that a tablet is required for the service.
When Kids+ is likely worth paying for
Because there is no independently established statistic for Kids+ usage, catalog size or educational benefit, the value decision has to come from your household’s actual use. The following situations make the subscription more defensible.
Your child uses several content formats
A child who reads the included books, listens to audiobooks, watches shows, plays games and uses music or podcasts can draw value from more of the monthly catalog than a child who wants one occasional video. Cross-device access can also matter if the child uses a tablet at home and an Echo or Fire TV elsewhere.
You want a ready-made, ad-free catalog
Kids+ is designed to reduce the need to find and approve individual children’s titles. The ad-free, curated presentation may be useful for families that prefer a separate child environment rather than handing over an unrestricted adult account.
You already own compatible hardware
If a suitable Fire tablet, Kindle, Fire TV or Echo is already in the home, you can evaluate the subscription on that device without adding the cost of a new tablet. Remember that content varies by device.
Your child uses it consistently
At $7.99 or $8.99 per month in the announced US pricing, regular use is the key test. A child who opens the library several times a week has a stronger case than one who uses it only during travel or school holidays.
When the subscription is probably not worth it
You only need time limits and restrictions
Amazon Kids profiles and the described Parent Dashboard controls do not require Kids+. If your goal is a bedtime schedule, an age filter, activity monitoring or controlled access to content you already own, start with the free profile.
Your child prefers a small number of existing titles
A subscription can be poor value when a child repeatedly uses a few purchased, borrowed or already-available titles and shows little interest in discovery. The catalog is a benefit only when your child actually uses it.
Your devices are incompatible or the needed feature is missing
Before paying, check the exact device and marketplace. Amazon states that content differs by device, and not every title, app or feature is guaranteed across the full hardware range.
You are buying a tablet only to obtain Kids+
The tablet bundles include one year of Kids+, but the subscription does not make the hardware free. Compare the total tablet purchase with the cost of using an existing compatible device, especially if the child already has suitable hardware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to decide before subscribing
- List the child’s real use. Note whether the child needs books, audiobooks, video, games, apps, music, podcasts or Alexa skills rather than assuming every category will be used.
- Check the device. Confirm that the intended Fire tablet, Kindle, Fire TV, Echo or Alexa-enabled tablet supports Kids+ and that the desired content is available on that device.
- Set up the free profile first. Create an Amazon Kids profile and configure age filters, schedules, time limits and access rules in Parent Dashboard.
- Compare the monthly price with usage. Use the marketplace price shown at checkout. Prime membership changes the announced US starting price, but it does not turn Kids+ into a free service.
- Review renewal before accepting an included term. Bundled or trial subscriptions can continue automatically, so record the renewal date and the payment method attached to the account.
- Reassess after the first month. Keep the subscription only if the child is using enough of the catalog to justify the recurring charge.
Trials, bundled terms and cancellation
Amazon’s cancellation help page says an included Kids+ subscription renews automatically when its included term ends, using a payment method on file. Amazon says cancellation can be started from membership settings or the web version of Parent Dashboard. Its instructions state that cancellation is not available in the Parent Dashboard mobile app.
The cited instructions are on Amazon’s UK help domain, so menus and timing may differ in another marketplace. Use the cancellation guidance for the country where the subscription was purchased: Cancel Your Amazon Kids+ Subscription. Do not wait until the last day if you want to avoid an unintended renewal; check the account’s displayed end date and confirmation message.
What Kids+ does not prove
A large or frequently refreshed catalog does not by itself establish that the content is educational, age-appropriate for every child or better than alternatives you already use. Amazon’s public material does not provide an independent, clearly attributable statistic for learning outcomes, total catalog size or consumer value. Treat marketing descriptions as feature information, then judge usefulness from your child’s behavior and your household’s budget.
Decision checklist
- Does the child use the included books, shows, games, apps, audiobooks, music, podcasts or Alexa skills often enough to matter?
- Do you already own a compatible Amazon device?
- Would the free Amazon Kids profile and Parent Dashboard controls solve the actual problem?
- Have you checked device-specific catalog availability?
- Have you recorded the renewal date and confirmed the cancellation path for your marketplace?
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Amazon Kids+ is a paid children’s content library, not a requirement for Amazon’s child profiles or parental controls. At the announced US starting prices of $7.99 monthly for Prime members and $8.99 for non-Prime customers, it makes the most sense for a child who regularly uses multiple included formats on compatible hardware. Try the free Amazon Kids controls first if you mainly need limits and filtering, and treat tablet bundles as optional hardware rather than a prerequisite.
