AI investing is an umbrella term for using algorithms, statistical models and artificial-intelligence techniques to analyze information, support investment research, recommend portfolio allocations, manage accounts or place trades. It is not one product, and it does not automatically mean generative AI or superior returns.
A robo-adviser is one consumer-facing example: it typically asks about your goals, time horizon, finances and risk tolerance, then creates and manages a portfolio. Other systems only rank research or automate trading decisions. The useful question is not whether a service uses the word “AI,” but what data it uses, what objective it optimizes, what it can change in your account and what human oversight exists.
What “AI investing” includes
The label can describe several different activities. A planning calculator may model scenarios without managing money. A research system may sort filings, news or market data for an analyst. A portfolio program may select investments and rebalance them. A trading system may generate orders according to rules or a learned model. These tools have different risks, costs and responsibilities, so treating them as interchangeable leads to poor decisions.
Algorithms are instructions for turning inputs into outputs. Some are simple rules, such as maintaining a target percentage in each asset class. Others use statistical or machine-learning models to identify patterns in large datasets. Generative AI, which produces text or other content, is a separate category; an investment algorithm does not become generative AI merely because marketing uses the word “AI.”

FINRA’s report Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Securities Industry, published June 10, 2020, described uses including curated market research, portfolio management and trading. It also said that retail digital investment recommendations at that time largely used rules-based models. That dated observation helps explain the range of technology, but it is not a live census of every platform available in 2026.
How an algorithm turns information into an investment action
Most automated investment systems follow a chain. The exact model may be proprietary, but the decision pattern is understandable:
- Collect inputs. Inputs can include a client questionnaire, account balances, prices, economic data, company information, tax details or portfolio constraints.
- Clean and interpret the data. The system may standardize values, remove duplicates, classify securities or estimate risk. Missing or incorrect information can affect every later step.
- Apply rules or a model. A rules engine, optimization routine, statistical model or machine-learning system evaluates the inputs against an objective, such as diversification, risk control or order execution.
- Produce an output. The result might be a research list, a suggested asset allocation, a rebalance, a portfolio change or a trade instruction.
- Monitor and repeat. A managed account can compare the portfolio with its target and act again when conditions or account data change.
This process does not prove that the output is accurate or profitable. It shows where assumptions enter the decision. A model trained on one period can behave differently in another, and a recommendation can be unsuitable if the system never received information that matters to you.

What a robo-adviser actually does
The SEC’s February 23, 2017 Investor Bulletin describes a typical robo-adviser as an online program that gathers an investor’s goals, investment horizon, income and other financial information, assets and risk tolerance through a questionnaire. It then creates and manages a portfolio. Services, investment approaches and available features differ among firms.
In practice, an automated account may recommend a mix of investments, implement that mix, reinvest distributions and rebalance when allocations drift. The program may offer limited access to a professional or no individualized human advice. The questionnaire is therefore not a formality: its answers become model inputs that influence the portfolio.
A robo-adviser is not synonymous with every use of AI in finance. An analyst can use an automated research tool while making the final decisions manually. A broker can use an algorithm to execute an order without offering automated portfolio management. Ask what the service controls, not simply whether its website says “AI.”

Where algorithms are used in investing
| Application | Typical inputs | Possible output |
|---|---|---|
| Financial planning | Goals, time horizon, income, assets and assumptions about saving or spending | Scenario illustrations or a suggested plan |
| Research prioritization | Market information, company disclosures and other datasets | A ranked or curated list for further review |
| Portfolio management | Risk profile, account holdings, target allocations and constraints | An allocation, rebalance or portfolio adjustment |
| Trading and execution | Prices, orders, liquidity and execution rules | An order, timing decision or routing instruction |
These categories can overlap. A single service might use one component to recommend an allocation and another to execute trades. The existence of automation says nothing by itself about whether the strategy suits your objectives.

Why an automated recommendation can miss your real situation
The SEC and FINRA’s May 8, 2015 Investor Alert on automated investment tools warns that a tool may not capture the full circumstances behind a decision. Potential gaps include:
- Age, overall financial situation and current needs
- Investment experience and knowledge
- Other holdings, accounts or concentrated positions
- Tax situation and the consequences of selling an asset
- Tolerance for losses, including how you would react during a decline
- Time horizon and the date when money may be needed
- Liquidity needs, emergency reserves or planned withdrawals
- Specific goals that a standard questionnaire does not ask about
Before accepting an output, read the service’s assumptions and identify which of these facts it actually uses. A portfolio can be mathematically consistent with a stated risk score while still being unsuitable because of a near-term cash need, a large holding elsewhere or a tax constraint.

The objective and incentives behind the model matter
An algorithm optimizes the objective its designer selected. That objective might be diversification, low turnover, a target risk level, revenue for the firm or some combination. Two systems receiving the same investor information can produce different actions because their objectives, constraints and fees differ.
In an August 13, 2024 speech about conflicts of interest in artificial intelligence, SEC Chair Gary Gensler discussed the risk that predictive analytics in brokerage applications and advisory services could be optimized in ways that put a firm’s interests ahead of investors. This is an incentive risk, not proof that every automated service acts against its customers. Look for disclosures explaining how recommendations are generated, how the firm is paid and whether the system has reasons to favor particular products or trading activity.

| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What investment approach does it use? | Asset selection, diversification, rebalancing and risk controls determine how the portfolio behaves. |
| What information and assumptions drive recommendations? | Missing holdings, taxes, liquidity needs or goals can make an otherwise coherent output unsuitable. |
| What does the service manage? | Some tools only provide suggestions; others can trade or manage an account. |
| What are the fees and other costs? | Advisory charges, fund expenses, trading costs and account fees reduce results and may influence product selection. |
| Is there a minimum balance? | A requirement can determine whether the service is available or practical for you. |
| How much human interaction is available? | You may need a qualified professional for complex tax, estate or withdrawal questions. |
| How does the portfolio fit your goals? | A generic risk label is not a complete suitability analysis. |
For an adviser, review its Form ADV Part 1 and Part 2 brochure. Those filings describe the business, services, fees, conflicts and disciplinary information. The SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) system can help you investigate an adviser. FINRA BrokerCheck is relevant when you are checking a broker or brokerage professional. Registration does not guarantee performance, but an inability to verify a provider is a serious reason to stop.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can AI choose stocks or manage a portfolio?
It can be programmed to rank securities, propose trades or manage an account within defined rules. That capability is different from demonstrating an advantage over a conventional strategy. The official SEC and FINRA materials cited here do not establish a universal return improvement, accuracy rate or “best” AI platform.
Stock tips produced by a chatbot or an automated screen are starting points for verification, not dependable advice. Check the underlying company information, fees, liquidity, tax consequences and your own exposure before acting. If a service cannot explain what it is optimizing or how to correct bad account information, you cannot reasonably assess its output.
Fraud warnings for AI-branded investments
The SEC, North American Securities Administrators Association and FINRA warned in a joint investor alert dated January 25, 2024 that scammers may use AI’s popularity and technical complexity to attract investors. Their exact warning is: Claims of high guaranteed investment returns with little or no risk are classic warning signs of fraud.
Be especially cautious when a promoter:
- Guarantees unusually high returns or says losses are impossible
- Uses urgency, secrecy or celebrity-style endorsements instead of verifiable disclosures
- Refuses to identify the legal entity, registration status, fees or custody arrangement
- Requests account passwords, seed phrases or sensitive identity information through an unverified channel
- Shows impressive back-tested charts without explaining assumptions, costs or periods of loss
Do not send credentials or personal documents until you have independently verified the firm and its official contact details. AI terminology is branding, not evidence of legitimacy.
A practical decision process before using an automated tool
- Define the job. Decide whether you need planning, research, allocation, account management or trade execution. A tool designed for one task may not be suitable for another.
- List information the system must know. Include outside holdings, taxes, liquidity needs, debts, experience and deadlines, not only a risk-tolerance score.
- Read the methodology and disclosures. Identify the model’s objective, rebalancing rules, eligible investments, fees, conflicts and limits on human support.
- Verify the provider. Check applicable registration and disciplinary information through IAPD or BrokerCheck, and confirm that the legal entity matches the account documents.
- Test the recommendation against your life. Ask whether you could fund near-term needs and tolerate the losses implied by the proposed allocation.
- Monitor after implementation. Review changes, fees, tax reports and account security. Update inputs when your goals, income, holdings or time horizon change.
Learning how these systems are built
Readers who want a hands-on technical explanation can use Build a Robo-Advisor with Python (From Scratch) by Rob Reider and Alexander Michalka, published by Manning in 2025. Its paperback covers portfolio construction and optimization, rebalancing, tax-loss harvesting, AI and Monte Carlo financial planning, and reinforcement learning. It is aimed at readers with basic Python and finance knowledge. Studying those techniques can clarify how automated tools are assembled; it is not a promise of investment returns or a recommendation to trade.
