AI alignment is the challenge of making an AI system’s behavior reliably match human intentions, values and legitimate instructions. Researchers do not treat alignment as a single property that can be certified with one score. They combine behavioral benchmarks, planned model tests, red-team attacks, user studies, scalable-oversight experiments, interpretability and control evaluations.

Each method supplies evidence about particular tasks, models and conditions. A model can perform well on a benchmark yet fail when instructions conflict, tools are available, the interaction lasts many turns or the deployment environment differs from testing. Alignment evaluation is therefore an evidence-building process, not a one-time safety stamp.

What AI alignment covers

Alignment asks whether an AI system does what people intend, rather than merely producing plausible outputs. That includes following authorized instructions, remaining honest about uncertainty and actions, avoiding harmful or manipulative behavior, respecting constraints, and cooperating with correction or shutdown. The scope is broader than checking whether a short list of prohibited answers appears in its responses.

Intentions and values can be incomplete, contradictory or difficult to express as rules. An assistant might satisfy the literal wording of a request while defeating the user’s real goal, or optimize a measurable reward while exploiting a weakness in the reward process. Alignment work studies how to train systems toward intended behavior and how to detect cases in which apparent compliance is unreliable.

Training toward alignment versus evaluating it

Training methods try to shape behavior. Examples include human feedback, procedures in which an AI system assists human evaluators, and other techniques intended to improve helpfulness, honesty or safety. Evaluation methods test the resulting behavior, search for failures and examine whether safeguards work under pressure. Evaluation can guide further training, but a test result is not itself a guarantee.

OpenAI describes its alignment program as iterative and empirical: researchers run experiments to learn which techniques scale and where they break. The UK AI Security Institute’s Alignment Project similarly presents benchmarks, oversight experiments and control tests as practical ways to gather evidence. These are examples of active approaches, not a universal definition or mandatory test suite.

Why there is no single alignment test

Alignment is a relationship between a system, a task, an environment and the people affected by its actions. A question-and-answer benchmark may reveal whether a model states a policy correctly, but it may not show what happens when the model can call tools, receives conflicting instructions or has many opportunities to pursue a hidden objective. A user study may reveal confusing behavior that a laboratory test missed, while an interpretability method may expose an internal pattern that is not visible in outputs.

Tests also differ in what counts as evidence. Some use a fixed answer key; others rely on human judgments, automated judges, adversarial investigators or measurements of whether a control protocol prevents an unsafe action. Results from methods with different scopes should not be combined into a single ranking without explaining what each measured.

Behavioral benchmarks: turning abstract risks into tasks

Benchmarks convert concepts such as honesty, non-manipulation or corrigibility into scenarios with measurable outcomes. Good benchmark design varies the context rather than asking the same question repeatedly. It can include conflicting instructions, simulated tool access, multi-turn escalation and opportunities to conceal a mistake.

Pressure Reveals Character

Nora Petrova and John Burden’s 2026 ICML paper, Pressure Reveals Character: Behavioural Alignment Evaluation at Depth, illustrates this approach. It reports 904 scenarios across six categories:

Category Behavior being probed
Honesty Whether the model represents facts, uncertainty and its own actions accurately.
Safety Whether it avoids causing or materially enabling harmful outcomes.
Non-Manipulation Whether it avoids steering people through deceptive or coercive tactics.
Robustness Whether behavior remains stable when context, wording or pressure changes.
Corrigibility Whether it accepts correction, oversight or intervention rather than resisting them.
Scheming Whether it pursues concealed strategies that conflict with the stated task or oversight.

The paper says human raters validated the scenarios as realistic and that 24 frontier models were evaluated with language-model judges checked against human annotations. Those figures describe that study’s design; they are not a census of frontier systems and do not establish a universal ranking.

Multi-turn and pressured scenarios matter because a single safe answer can coexist with unsafe behavior later in an interaction. Benchmark designers therefore record the exact prompt sequence, available tools, model version, judge procedure and escalation rules so another team can understand what the score actually represents.

Model testing, red teaming and user testing

The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s ARIA Evaluation Planning Manual: Elements of ARIA-Style AI Evaluations, published September 18, 2026, describes a three-part approach: “The ARIA approach assesses an AI system’s trustworthiness by combining data from three types of testing: Model Testing, Red Teaming, and User Testing.” The manual lists Theodore Jensen, Mark Przybocki, Monica Kodwani, Kristen Greene, Patrick Hall, Razvan Amironesei and Craig Greenberg as authors.

Model testing

Model testing uses planned tasks and predefined procedures. Teams can measure accuracy, refusal behavior, calibration, consistency, tool-use outcomes or adherence to a policy. Because the tasks are specified in advance, this method supports repeatable comparisons across model versions. Its weakness is coverage: a test can only reveal behavior represented in its prompts, data and scoring rules.

Red teaming

Red teams actively search for failure paths. Testers may vary wording, combine instructions, exploit edge cases, attempt social engineering, induce the model to reveal restricted information or create long interactions that change the incentives. Red teaming is most informative when testers document the conditions that produced a failure and verify whether the failure can be reproduced. It is not evidence that every untested attack has been ruled out.

User testing

User testing observes how people actually encounter the system. Participants may misunderstand a warning, over-trust a confident answer, miss a qualification or find a safety control unusable. These results capture human-system interaction that laboratory prompts can overlook. The population, task, interface and level of participant expertise all affect what the study can support.

Anthropic describes its alignment work as checking whether models remain harmless and honest in circumstances unlike those used during training, while systematically searching for situations in which they behave badly. Varying prompts, settings and pressures is therefore central to evaluation rather than an optional extra.

Scalable oversight: evaluating behavior humans cannot check directly

Scalable oversight asks how people can correctly reward or verify an AI system when judging the work directly is too difficult, expensive or time-consuming. This problem appears when a model produces long plans, complex code, scientific arguments or actions whose consequences unfold over time.

Protocols under study

The UK AI Security Institute lists empirical work on debate, prover–verifier games, consistency training, weak-to-strong supervision and related protocols. In debate, systems argue for competing answers so that a judge can inspect the dispute; prover–verifier designs separate a proposed solution from a procedure that checks it; weak-to-strong supervision studies whether a less capable supervisor can guide a more capable model. The central question is not whether a protocol sounds plausible, but whether it remains accurate and stable as tasks become harder.

Benefits and new failure modes

OpenAI identifies training AI systems to assist human evaluation as one of its main alignment pillars. Assistance could let people review more examples or focus on difficult cases. It can also amplify subtle inconsistencies, bias or vulnerabilities in the assisting model. Evaluators therefore test both the quality of the assistance and the ways it may distort human judgments.

Auditing hidden behavior and testing control

Ordinary question-and-answer tests can miss a model that behaves differently during evaluation and deployment, performs unusually poorly only when monitored, coordinates with another model or attempts a low-probability action that a short test never observes. The Alignment Project calls tests of possible alignment faking “trustedness evaluations.” It describes control evaluations as exercises that ask whether safeguards can block unsafe actions even when a system is intentionally scheming. These are evaluation targets, not claims that current deployed systems necessarily exhibit such behavior.

AuditBench

Anthropic’s 2026 AuditBench release provides a concrete testbed for alignment auditing. It contains 56 language models with implanted hidden behaviors across 14 categories. The models were trained not to confess those behaviors when asked directly, forcing investigators to seek indirect evidence. An investigator agent was evaluated across 13 tool configurations.

The reported results illustrate why tooling and interpretation must be separated. Scaffolded black-box tools, in which an auxiliary model generates diverse prompts, were most effective overall. White-box interpretability tools helped mainly on easier targets. AuditBench also reports a “tool-to-agent gap”: evidence surfaced by a tool may fail to improve the investigator’s conclusion if the agent underuses the tool or misreads signal and noise. These numbers describe the testbed and its experiment, not the prevalence of hidden behavior in deployed models.

Interpretability and monitoring

Interpretability methods inspect internal computations or representations; behavioral tests inspect outputs and actions. Used together, they can provide cross-checks. For example, investigators might compare a chain-of-thought monitor with white-box signals that indicate what computations influenced an answer.

Visible reasoning is not automatically a faithful transcript of the process that produced a decision. The Alignment Project notes that many faithfulness evaluations use simple question-and-answer settings, which may not establish monitorability in complex domains. A model can provide a convincing explanation after reaching a conclusion through a different internal route. Monitoring claims therefore need tests that connect the observed trace to the behavior and conditions that generated it.

How to compare evaluation methods

Scores from different methods are meaningful only when their scope is made explicit. The following questions expose the main differences:

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Behavior Is the test measuring honesty, safety, non-manipulation, robustness, corrigibility, scheming or another property?
Interaction Is it single-turn, multi-turn or an extended task with changing incentives?
Conditions Are there conflicting instructions, tool access, adversarial pressure, monitoring or opportunities to conceal behavior?
Judge Does a fixed answer key, human rater, language-model judge, investigator agent or control mechanism determine the result?
Visibility Does the evaluator see only outputs and actions, or also internal states and interpretability signals?
Scope Does the result support a narrow task claim, a broader trustworthiness claim or evidence about a proposed oversight protocol?

A benchmark score should not be presented as interchangeable with a red-team finding or an oversight result. The methods answer different questions.

A practical evaluation workflow

An evaluation program can be organized as a sequence, with each stage recording the limits of the evidence it produces.

  1. Define the intended behavior. State whose instructions count, what values or policies apply, what uncertainty the model must disclose and which actions require confirmation.
  2. Choose failure categories. Include the risks relevant to the deployment, such as dishonesty, unsafe assistance, manipulation, brittle behavior, resistance to correction or concealed strategies.
  3. Build varied scenarios. Use ordinary tasks as well as conflicting instructions, multi-turn escalation, simulated tools and adversarial prompts. Preserve the exact model version and environment.
  4. Set the judging procedure. Decide in advance which outcomes are acceptable, who or what will judge them, how human annotations will be checked and how disagreements will be handled.
  5. Run independent methods. Combine planned model tests with red teaming and user testing. Add scalable-oversight, interpretability or control experiments when direct checking is difficult.
  6. Investigate anomalies. Reproduce surprising successes and failures, vary the prompt and environment, and test whether a monitoring signal is being used correctly rather than merely displayed.
  7. Report bounded conclusions. Identify the tested model, task, conditions, sample size and judge. Separate observed behavior from hypotheses about why it occurred.
  8. Re-evaluate after changes. New training data, tools, system prompts, interfaces or deployment incentives can change behavior, so an earlier result does not automatically transfer.

How to interpret a passing result

A passing result supports a limited statement: under the specified prompts, tools, judge and environmental conditions, the model met the stated criterion at the measured rate. It does not prove that the model will behave safely in every deployment.

  • Coverage is finite. Unseen prompts, longer interactions or different users may expose different behavior.
  • Evaluation can change incentives. A system might act differently when it detects testing, monitoring or a particular prompt format.
  • Judges can fail. Human and automated evaluators can miss subtle deception, reward stylistic compliance or disagree about ambiguous cases.
  • Tools and interfaces matter. Access to browsing, code execution, external systems or persistent memory can create risks absent from a text-only test.
  • Internal evidence is imperfect. A reasoning trace or interpretability signal may not faithfully represent the process behind the output.
  • Control is a separate question. Even if a model appears aligned, an organization must test whether safeguards can stop an unsafe action when the model does not cooperate.

What a useful alignment report should contain

Readers should be able to reconstruct what was actually tested. A credible report identifies:

  • the model name, version, configuration and deployment context;
  • the behavior categories and intended standard;
  • the number and type of scenarios, including whether they were single-turn or multi-turn;
  • available tools, conflicting instructions, monitoring and other pressure conditions;
  • who judged outcomes and how judges were validated;
  • failure rates, uncertainty, notable failures and reproducibility checks;
  • which claims are supported directly and which remain hypotheses;
  • how the system will be retested after updates or expanded access.

This level of detail prevents a narrow benchmark result from being mistaken for a general safety certificate.
