Adobe Acrobat Reader is Adobe’s free PDF application for opening, viewing, and working with PDF files. It can also print, search, share, fill in forms, sign, and annotate PDFs. Reader is different from paid Acrobat plans: it can mark up a document, but it cannot change the text or images already in the PDF.

What is Adobe Acrobat Reader?

Adobe describes Acrobat Reader as a free, stand-alone application for working with PDF files. It is available for desktop and mobile devices; Adobe lists Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android on its Reader product page. The exact features available can vary by app and platform.

A PDF reader is useful for opening a document and viewing its pages, but Reader also includes tools for common document tasks. Adobe’s Acrobat Reader FAQ, last updated June 21, 2026, describes it as free software for opening, viewing, signing, printing, annotating, searching, and sharing PDFs.

What can you do with Reader?

  • Read and search: Open PDFs and find text within a document.
  • Print and share: Print a PDF or share it with others.
  • Complete forms: Fill in PDF forms.
  • Sign: Add a signature to a document.
  • Annotate: Add comments, highlights, sticky notes, strikethroughs, and freehand drawings, as listed on Adobe’s Reader product page.

Is Acrobat Reader free?

Yes. Adobe describes Reader as free software for desktop and mobile use. The paid Acrobat plans are separate products; Adobe’s pages distinguish them from Reader without making a subscription necessary for basic reading, form filling, signing, or annotation. Adobe’s current pricing is not covered here, and it may vary by country and billing option.

Can Acrobat Reader edit a PDF?

It depends on what you mean by “edit.” Reader can add markups and comments, which change the annotations attached to a PDF. It cannot change the document’s existing text or images. Adobe says text and image editing requires Acrobat Standard or Acrobat Pro; see its product page for that distinction.

If your goal is to review a document, fill out a form, sign it, or point out changes, Reader’s tools may be enough. If you need to rewrite existing text or replace an image, you need a tool with PDF content-editing capabilities.
