Adjustable actuation lets you choose how far a key must move before the keyboard registers a press. A shallow setting registers an input after less travel; a deeper setting requires a more deliberate press. The feature can make one keyboard feel quick for games, controlled for typing, or adaptable to both, but its range, adjustment steps, supported keys, sensing method and controls depend on the specific model.
It is not the same as Rapid Trigger. Adjustable actuation changes a trigger threshold that can remain fixed, while Rapid Trigger changes how the key resets as it moves. Understanding that distinction prevents confusing two related features or assuming that a specification on one keyboard applies to every adjustable-actuation model.
What adjustable actuation means
A keyboard normally registers a key when its switch crosses an actuation point. That point is a physical position in the key’s downward travel. With a conventional fixed-threshold switch, the manufacturer chooses the position and the user cannot move it.
Adjustable actuation replaces that fixed choice with a configurable threshold. You select the distance at which the key becomes active, within the limits of the keyboard. Set the threshold closer to the top of the travel and the key can register with a light, shallow press. Set it farther down and the key must move more before the same input is sent.

The setting is usually expressed in millimetres (mm) of travel. SteelSeries uses a Cherry Red switch as a fixed-threshold example with a 2 mm actuation point. Its OmniPoint implementation allows users to set an active/reset point from 0.1 mm to 4 mm. The Wooting Two HE product page lists 0.1–4.0 mm adjustment on each key in 0.1 mm increments. Those figures describe those products, not an industry-wide standard.
Actuation point and reset point
The actuation point is where a downward press becomes an input. The reset point is where an upward-moving key stops being registered. On a conventional switch, a press remains active while the key is held below the actuation point and ends only after the key rises past its reset position. Some keyboards expose the two positions together as an active/reset setting; others provide additional controls.
Why the distance changes the feel
- A shallower threshold can make rapid taps and movement-key changes feel immediate, but it leaves less physical movement between a resting finger and an input.
- A deeper threshold can reduce unintended presses from resting fingers or brushing a key, at the cost of requiring more travel for every activation.
- A per-key system lets you make sensitive keys shallow and frequently mistyped or frequently touched keys deeper, rather than forcing one compromise across the board.
How a key registers a press
The following sequence describes static adjustable actuation, the simplest form of the feature:
- The key is at rest. Its sensor reports a position above the configured trigger threshold, so no input is active.
- You press downward. The switch or sensor measures the key’s movement continuously or at discrete positions, depending on its design.
- The key crosses the configured actuation point. The keyboard firmware marks the key as pressed and sends the corresponding input to the computer or console.
- You keep holding the key. The input stays active even though the key may continue moving toward the bottom of its travel.
- You release the key. The key must rise through the reset condition defined by that implementation before the input ends and another press can be registered.
Changing the actuation value moves the crossing point in step three. It does not automatically change key travel, spring weight, keycap height or the time taken by the computer to process an input. It changes the position at which the keyboard decides that the press has happened.

What hardware senses the movement
There is no single switch technology behind every adjustable-actuation keyboard. The material covered here includes SteelSeries OmniPoint designs, Hall Effect magnetic switches and Razer analog optical models. Razer describes its Hall Effect keyboards as using contactless magnetic sensors. In a Hall Effect design, the sensor detects changes in a magnetic field as the key moves instead of relying on metal contacts closing at one fixed point.
Other products use an optical arrangement in which the keyboard detects an interruption or change in a light path. A model may also expose an analog position signal that firmware translates into an actuation distance. These approaches can support adjustable thresholds, but their calibration, resolution and available controls are product-specific.
Do not infer the sensing technology from the phrase “adjustable actuation” alone. Check the manufacturer’s specification for the exact keyboard, and verify whether every key uses the same sensor. The sensing method affects which features are possible, while the firmware determines which of those possibilities the user can actually configure.

| Feature | What you configure | How the key behaves | Typical reason to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjustable actuation | The distance at which a press activates; some products pair this with a reset point | A static threshold remains in force until you change it | Choose a more sensitive or more deliberate trigger for a key or profile |
| Rapid Trigger | How much upward or downward movement is needed to change state, where supported | The reset responds dynamically as soon as the key begins moving upward after registration, rather than waiting for a conventional fixed reset point | Reduce the release travel needed for repeated inputs |
What Rapid Trigger changes
With a conventional switch, a registered key generally has to travel back past a fixed reset point before the next press can be detected. Razer describes Rapid Trigger as resetting when the key starts moving upward after registration. Its cited supported products specify sensitivity down to 0.1 mm. That is a manufacturer’s sensitivity specification, not an independent measurement of response time or a guaranteed improvement in a particular game.
Rapid Trigger can coexist with adjustable actuation. Wooting’s setup guidance says its Rapid Trigger behavior depends on both the selected actuation point and sensitivity. On supported Hall Effect keyboards, it can be enabled per key, with separate upstroke and downstroke sensitivities. A low actuation point does not, by itself, mean Rapid Trigger is enabled.
How settings affect gaming and typing
Fast, repeated game inputs
Players who repeatedly tap movement, jump or other action keys may prefer a shallower actuation point because the keyboard registers the downstroke sooner. Rapid Trigger can further reduce the upward travel required before another input is accepted. These settings change the keyboard’s trigger and reset behavior; they do not guarantee a measurable advantage, a specific reaction time or better results in every game.
Controlled typing
Typing involves frequent contact with neighbouring keys and resting fingers. A deeper threshold can provide more physical margin before a key activates. If a keyboard supports per-key settings, you can use a more deliberate value on keys that are often brushed while keeping a different value on keys where quick activation matters.

One profile for both
Many configurable keyboards store multiple software or onboard profiles. A practical approach is to make one profile for games and another for general typing, then test each profile with the applications you actually use. The useful setting is the one that produces reliable inputs without accidental presses, not the smallest number shown in the control panel.
Why extremely shallow settings can misfire
At the shortest settings, a key may activate from movement that is not a deliberate press. Wooting specifically cautions that at 0.1 mm, keycap movement itself can trigger a key, and that removing its default dead zones can create an unstable experience. This warning applies to that product’s implementation and illustrates a general trade-off: greater sensitivity leaves less tolerance for vibration, finger weight, keycap wobble and calibration noise.
If you see unwanted inputs, increase the actuation distance, restore any default dead zone, or use a deeper value on the affected keys. Test one change at a time so you can tell whether the problem is the threshold, Rapid Trigger sensitivity or a physical issue such as a loose keycap.

How to configure adjustable actuation
The exact labels and menus differ by keyboard. Some products require a desktop utility; others can save settings to onboard memory, and some offer both. Use this model-agnostic procedure, then follow the keyboard’s own limits and instructions.

- Confirm support. Check the exact model, firmware version and supported keys. A keyboard may advertise adjustable actuation while limiting it to particular switches or operating modes.
- Open the configuration method. Launch the manufacturer’s utility if the model uses software. Razer documents Synapse and onboard adjustment options for its cited line; other manufacturers use their own applications or web configurators.
- Select a profile. Choose the software or onboard profile that the target game or operating system will use. A setting saved to a different profile will appear not to work.
- Choose the keys. If per-key control is available, select an individual key or a group. If not, the keyboard may apply one actuation value globally.
- Set the actuation distance. Enter a value within the model’s supported range and step size. For example, the Wooting Two HE lists 0.1–4.0 mm in 0.1 mm increments; another model may offer a different range.
- Configure Rapid Trigger separately, if present. Enable it only on supported keys, then set the available sensitivity controls. Wooting documents separate upstroke and downstroke sensitivity options on supported keyboards.
- Save and apply. Write the profile to the keyboard’s onboard memory when that option exists, or leave the utility running if the setting is software-dependent.
- Test deliberately. Use a text editor and a simple game-training area to check single taps, holds, releases and repeated taps. Test the exact profile and connection mode you will use in practice.
How to compare keyboards with adjustable actuation
Do not compare only the smallest advertised number. Record the full behavior and the conditions behind each specification.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Actuation range | What is the minimum and maximum distance? Are the values stated in millimetres? | A broad range gives more choice, but only if the firmware can use it reliably. |
| Adjustment increments | Can you move in 0.1 mm steps, larger steps, or only between presets? | Smaller steps allow finer tuning but do not guarantee better real-world results. |
| Per-key control | Can each key have its own value, or is one value applied to the whole board? | Per-key control lets gaming and typing keys use different compromises. |
| Rapid Trigger | Is it supported, and can it be enabled per key? | Rapid Trigger is a separate reset feature, not a synonym for adjustable actuation. |
| Reset sensitivity | Are upstroke and downstroke sensitivities independently configurable? | Separate controls can change repeated-input behavior, but they also require more testing. |
| Supported keys | Does the feature work on every key, only analog keys, or a named subset? | Specifications often describe a keyboard family while restrictions apply to individual keys. |
| Sensing technology | Is the design Hall Effect magnetic, optical, or another implementation? | The sensor and its calibration determine what the firmware can detect. |
| Where settings live | Can values be stored onboard, or is the manufacturer’s software required? | Onboard storage matters when moving between computers or using a locked-down system. |
Examples of how to read specifications
- Wooting Two HE: Its current product specification, accessed October 13, 2026, lists 0.1–4.0 mm actuation adjustment on each key in 0.1 mm increments. Its setup guidance describes per-key Rapid Trigger and separate upstroke/downstroke sensitivity on supported Hall Effect keyboards.
- SteelSeries OmniPoint: The cited documentation describes an active/reset range of 0.1–4 mm and explicitly distinguishes its static adjustable-actuation behavior from Rapid Trigger.
- Razer supported products: Razer documents adjustable actuation in its FAQ, Rapid Trigger sensitivity down to 0.1 mm on supported products, and configuration through Synapse and onboard options for the cited line. The material cited here does not establish one universal actuation range for every Razer model.
Troubleshooting common problems
The keyboard still triggers at the old distance
- Check that the selected profile is active and that the configuration was saved.
- Confirm whether the keyboard requires its utility to remain running or whether the profile was written to onboard memory.
- Verify firmware and model support; a similarly named keyboard may not expose the same controls.
- Test a key that is documented as supported. Some features do not apply to every key.
Keys activate accidentally
Increase the actuation distance and restore any dead-zone setting you removed. If Rapid Trigger is enabled, reduce its sensitivity or disable it on the affected key. Check for keycap wobble, vibration and fingers resting near the trigger point before assuming the sensor is defective.
Repeated taps do not behave as expected
First determine whether you are testing static adjustable actuation or Rapid Trigger. A static threshold still waits for its configured reset behavior. Rapid Trigger uses movement-based reset and may expose separate upstroke and downstroke controls. Change one control at a time and test both a short tap and a held key.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe software will not accept a chosen value
The value may be outside the model’s range or between its allowed increments. Use the range and step size shown for that exact keyboard rather than copying a number from another product. A specification such as 0.1–4.0 mm on one model does not imply that every adjustable keyboard accepts those endpoints.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose adjustable actuation if you want to tune when a key activates rather than accept one factory threshold.
- Choose per-key control if your goal is to make movement keys quick while keeping typing or modifier keys more deliberate.
- Look for Rapid Trigger only when reducing release travel for repeated inputs is important; treat it as a separate feature.
- Verify the sensing technology, supported keys, range, increments and storage method for the exact model.
- Plan to test shallow settings and keep a fallback profile with deeper actuation or default dead zones.
- Judge the result by reliable, intentional inputs. The lowest advertised distance is not automatically the best setting.
What to remember
Adjustable actuation moves the point at which a keyboard registers a press. Static thresholds can be made shallower or deeper, while Rapid Trigger dynamically changes reset behavior as a key moves. Ranges such as 0.1–4.0 mm, 0.1 mm increments and 0.1 mm Rapid Trigger sensitivity are manufacturer specifications for particular products, not universal standards. Compare the complete implementation—sensor, per-key controls, reset settings, supported keys and configuration method—before deciding whether a keyboard will suit your games and everyday typing.
