A web user interface (web UI) is the part of a website or web application that people use to see information and interact with it. It includes page content and controls such as links, buttons, navigation menus, and form fields. The phrase can also refer to a browser’s own controls, so it helps to distinguish the site’s interface from the browser interface.

What does “web user interface” mean?

MDN defines a user interface as anything that facilitates interaction between a person and a machine. Applied to the Web, that means the user-facing parts of a site or web application: what a person can perceive and the controls they can use to interact with the system. MDN’s UI glossary gives the broad definition; the W3C MBUI glossary describes a software interface as components that let users observe and manipulate concepts represented by an interactive system.

A web UI is more than its visible buttons. It includes the presentation of information and the interactive elements through which someone navigates, enters data, makes a selection, or changes something in the application.

What are examples of web UI elements?

  • Navigation: links, menus, and other controls that help people move between pages or sections.
  • Actions: buttons that submit a form, save a change, or trigger another function.
  • Input and selection: text fields, radio buttons, and drop-down menus for entering information or choosing an option.
  • Feedback: messages that communicate a result or identify an error a person needs to fix.

These elements may be part of the initial page or generated by scripts. A web page itself can also involve more than one file: the W3C glossary describes a page as a primary resource rendered together with related resources such as text, images, JavaScript, and CSS. W3C’s WCAG glossary entry for “web page” explains that distinction.

Is a web UI the same as a browser interface?

No. A browser, also called a user agent, has its own controls, such as its menus, buttons, prompts, and mechanisms for moving focus. The content user interface consists of controls that are part of the web page, such as its links and form fields. The distinction matters when describing which part of the experience a person is interacting with. W3C’s WCAG glossary entry for “user interface component” addresses controls in web content.

How does a web UI differ from user experience, usability, and accessibility?

Term What it describes
Web UI The content, presentation, and controls through which someone interacts with a website or web application.
User experience (UX) The broader interaction between people and a system. The UI is one part of that experience; MDN describes UX as concerned with making interaction intuitive and easy from the user’s point of view.
Usability How effectively, efficiently, and satisfactorily specified users can achieve specified goals in a specified context. W3C relays this definition from ISO 9241-11.
Accessibility Whether people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with web content and tools, and contribute without barriers.

Usability and accessibility overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A design can be easy for some people to use while still creating barriers for others. W3C’s accessibility, usability, and inclusion guidance explains how these areas relate.

What makes a web UI easier to use and access?

Good interface design helps people understand what controls do, move through a site predictably, and recover when something goes wrong. W3C guidance highlights practical behaviors such as keeping navigation consistent, identifying controls consistently when they serve the same function, avoiding unexpected context changes when someone focuses a control or enters data, and clearly identifying form errors and the fields that need correction. W3C’s WCAG understanding documents explain these kinds of requirements and techniques.

Standards and evaluation with real people both matter. W3C recommends involving people with disabilities early and during evaluation, while noting that user involvement alone cannot represent the full range of disabilities, assistive technologies, and adaptive strategies. Standards and techniques remain necessary alongside testing.
