A virtual tape server (VTS) presents tape-like drives and volumes to backup software, but stores the data in a virtualized backend such as disk cache, physical tape, or cloud storage. The backup workflow can resemble a physical tape library even though the underlying storage may not be tape at all.
What does “virtual tape server” mean?
A VTS is a system that emulates tape devices and media for a host or backup application. It can present virtual drives, tape volumes and, where supported, a media changer—the component that manages which volumes are available to drives.
The related term virtual tape library (VTL) often describes the logical library interface that the backup software sees. VTS may refer to the system implementing that interface or to a particular product. Vendors do not use the terms uniformly, so check what a specific product means by VTS or VTL.
For example, Dell defines its VTL as “an emulation of a physical tape library on a disk-based deduplication and compression system” in its DR Series System Administrator Guide. That description applies to the Dell system it documents, not every VTS implementation.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How does a virtual tape server work?
- The backup application connects to virtual tape devices. Depending on the system, the host sees emulated drives, volumes and a media changer through a supported interface and protocol.
- Backup data is written to the virtual volume. The VTS directs the data to its configured backend, which might be disk or cache, attached physical tape, or cloud object storage.
- The system manages any movement or tiering. Some implementations retain data in cache before sending it elsewhere; others provide archive tiers that require a recall before data can be restored.
- A restore follows the backend’s availability path. Recently cached data may be accessible differently from an archived volume. Exact restore steps and wait times depend on the product and storage tier.
In AWS Tape Gateway, for instance, backup software writes to virtual tapes over an iSCSI VTL interface. AWS says the gateway stores data locally as it is written and asynchronously uploads it to virtual tapes in Amazon S3; tapes may then be moved to an archive tier. See AWS Storage Gateway documentation: How Tape Gateway works.
Where is the data actually stored?
“Virtual tape” describes how storage is presented to the backup application, not necessarily the physical medium holding the data. The product’s architecture determines the backend and the data path.

| Implementation | What the backup software sees | Possible data path |
|---|---|---|
| Disk- or cache-backed VTL | Emulated tape drives, volumes and possibly a changer | Data is held on disk or cache. Some systems can also connect to physical tape. |
| Cloud tape gateway | Virtual tapes through a supported VTL interface | Data may be cached locally, uploaded to cloud object storage, and optionally moved to an archive tier. |
| Virtual tape system with physical tape integration | Logical tape devices and volumes | Data may be cached or managed virtually before being copied or moved to physical tape, depending on the product. |
A virtual cartridge is therefore not automatically offline or archival. It may be backed by online disk or cloud storage. If a volume is in an archive tier, restoring it may require a recall operation; confirm the tier’s retrieval behavior for the specific service.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy use a VTS instead of changing backup software?
A VTS can preserve a tape-oriented backup workflow while changing the storage layer underneath it. An organization may be able to keep supported tape-based backup software interactions while using disk or cloud-backed storage in place of some physical tape operations.

The operational trade-off is that the tape-like interface does not make the backend behave exactly like physical tape. Cache capacity, upload or copy behavior, archive retrieval, and management responsibilities still matter. AWS describes Tape Gateway as a way to replace on-premises physical tape workflows with cloud-backed virtual tapes, but archive choices affect how quickly archived data can be retrieved. IBM’s stated benefits for IBM i virtual tape, including improved availability and quicker backup, are specific to that product and are not a general performance guarantee for all VTS systems.

IBM Storage Protect documentation describes a VTL library as a library represented by a SCSI-controlled media changer and specifies conditions for VTL operation. That is an example of why a VTL label alone is not enough to establish compatibility; consult the documentation for the precise software and system versions.
