A virtual network is a logically isolated network created in software over shared physical networking infrastructure. It lets workloads communicate as though they were on a separate network without requiring a separate set of physical cables for every environment. The exact meaning depends on context: it may refer to network virtualization in a data center or to a cloud provider’s managed network service, such as Azure Virtual Network, Google Cloud VPC, or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure VCN.
What is a virtual network?
At its broadest, a virtual network is a logical network built on top of physical networking resources. Software and network configuration create distinct network environments on infrastructure that may also carry traffic for other tenants, teams, or applications. The separation is logical; it does not necessarily mean the systems use separate physical cabling.
In the data-center networking context, the IETF defines a virtual network as “a logical abstraction of a physical network that provides L2 or L3 network services to a set of Tenant Systems.” That formal definition describes network virtualization for data centers, not every product or service called a virtual network. IETF RFC 7365

Microsoft calls its service Azure Virtual Network (VNet), Google Cloud uses VPC network, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure uses Virtual Cloud Network (VCN). These services share the broad idea of a logical network, but their features and behavior are provider-specific.

How does a virtual network work?
Virtual networking separates network contexts through software-defined configuration and enforcement. A workload connects through a virtual network interface; its address, subnet, routes, and applicable security rules determine how it can communicate. The underlying physical network carries the traffic, while the virtual-network design determines which logical network the traffic belongs to and where it may go.
In a data-center overlay design, the overlay is the virtual network carried across an underlay transport network. The underlay provides connectivity between the nodes transporting overlay traffic; the overlay provides logical network services to tenant systems. NVIDIA describes network virtualization as “the carving up of a single physical network into many virtual networks.” NVIDIA Data Center Networking Concepts

Cloud services package network configuration differently. For example, Microsoft describes an Azure VNet in terms of an address range, DNS settings, and subnet segmentation. Google describes its VPC network as a virtual version of a physical network implemented on Google’s production network. Those descriptions are examples of provider implementations, not rules that every virtual network must follow.
What are the main components?
The components depend on the platform and what the network needs to do. A simple virtual network does not necessarily require every gateway or appliance listed below.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.

- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Address space: The IP range assigned to the network. Plan ranges with future connections in mind: overlapping ranges can complicate routing when networks are joined. Microsoft’s documented Azure scenarios require connected VNets and on-premises networks to use non-overlapping CIDR blocks. Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Network FAQ
- Subnets: Smaller portions of an address space used to group resources, such as application tiers. The subnet model and rules vary by provider. Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Network concepts and best practices
- Workloads and network interfaces: Compute resources connect to the logical network through virtual interfaces. The provider or virtualization platform defines the interface’s specific behavior.
- Routes and routing tables: Routes determine where packets go, including whether traffic stays within the network or is directed toward another network or service. Some virtualized designs keep separate routing contexts for different networks. IETF RFC 7365
- Security controls: Security groups, firewall rules, and related policies limit permitted traffic. Their names, scope, and enforcement differ between platforms. Microsoft’s Azure concepts guide and Oracle’s networking overview
- Gateways and connections: VPN gateways, peering, and interconnect services can link a virtual network to other networks. These are connectivity options, not mandatory parts of every virtual network. Microsoft’s Azure FAQ and Google Cloud VPC documentation
- Overlay and underlay (in data-center designs): The overlay carries logical network services; the underlay transports overlay traffic between the relevant nodes. NVIDIA Data Center Networking Concepts
What are virtual networks used for?
- Separating environments: Organizations can keep tenants, teams, applications, or development and production environments logically distinct on shared infrastructure. IETF RFC 7365 and NVIDIA
- Connecting cloud workloads: A provider’s network service gives cloud resources a configured network context for private communication. Azure and Google Cloud document connectivity for resources within their respective network services. Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud
- Building hybrid connectivity: VPN and interconnect options can link a cloud network with an on-premises network. The available methods and setup are provider-specific. Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud
- Controlling network paths: Subnets, routes, and security policies help organize resources and govern which traffic is allowed between them or toward connected networks. Microsoft Azure
How is a virtual network different from a VLAN, overlay, or VPN?
| Term | What it means | How it relates to a virtual network |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual network | A broad logical or software-defined network abstraction. | The general concept; exact implementation depends on the platform. |
| VLAN | A Layer 2 method of segmenting Ethernet networks. | Related to network segmentation, but not a synonym for a cloud VNet or VPC. |
| Overlay network | A virtual network carried over an underlay transport network. | A data-center design approach; the overlay and underlay have different roles. |
| Cloud VNet, VPC, or VCN | A provider-defined cloud networking service. | Examples of virtual-network services, with provider-specific configuration and behavior. |
| VPN | A tunneled connection between networks or users. | It can connect a virtual network to another network, but is not itself the virtual network. |
How do cloud virtual network services differ?
Azure VNet, Google Cloud VPC, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure VCN are related in purpose, but their names do not imply identical operation. Evaluate a service using its documented address planning rules, subnet organization, route and security controls, connectivity options, regional or other scope, and operational requirements. The descriptions below are examples, not a performance or price comparison.
| Service | Provider description | Documented elements relevant to the concept |
|---|---|---|
| Azure Virtual Network (VNet) | Microsoft describes it as a logically isolated cloud network dedicated to a subscription. | Address range, DNS settings, subnets, and options for cloud-only or hybrid networking. Microsoft Azure Virtual Network FAQ |
| Google Cloud VPC network | Google describes it as a virtual version of a physical network implemented in Google’s production network. | Connectivity for compute instances and options including Cloud VPN tunnels and VLAN attachments for Cloud Interconnect. Google Cloud VPC networks |
| Oracle Cloud Infrastructure VCN | Oracle describes it as a software-defined network in OCI data centers in a region. | Subnets, firewall rules, and gateways are among the networking components described. Oracle Networking Overview |
Does a virtual network automatically make a system secure?
No. Logical isolation helps separate network traffic, but it does not by itself guarantee complete security. The result depends on the platform’s isolation model and the network’s configuration, including routes and security policies. Review the provider’s controls and configure access deliberately rather than treating the existence of a virtual network as a substitute for security design.
