A top-level domain (TLD) is the final label in a domain name—the part after the last dot, such as com in example.com. It is a level in the Domain Name System (DNS) hierarchy, not a website, hosting account, or domain-registration company. During a lookup, DNS uses the TLD to direct a resolver toward the servers responsible for the rest of the name.
What a top-level domain is
Read a domain name from right to left. In icann.org, org is the TLD and icann is the second-level domain. In www.example.com, com is the TLD, example is the second-level domain, and www is a host label or subdomain. The dots separate labels in a hierarchical namespace.
ICANN’s Domain Name Basics FAQ explains the idea in plain language: “Every domain name around the world ends with a top-level domain (TLD); these are the 2 or more letters that come after the dot.” In stricter technical terminology, RFC 7719 defines a TLD as a zone one layer below the DNS root. The root is represented by a trailing dot that browsers normally hide, so the fully qualified form of example.com is example.com.
Breaking down a domain name
| Example | Label | Role |
|---|---|---|
events.icann.org |
org |
Top-level domain (TLD) |
events.icann.org |
icann |
Second-level domain, registered under .org |
events.icann.org |
events |
Subdomain; ICANN also describes this position as a third-level domain in its example |
www.example.com |
www |
Host label or subdomain chosen by the domain owner |
A TLD is therefore not the entire address. It does not identify a particular page, server, organization, or registrar. It identifies the highest delegated portion of the name below the root.

How DNS uses a TLD during a lookup
DNS is distributed rather than stored in one global database. Paul Mockapetris’s RFC 1034 describes it succinctly: “The domain name space is a tree structure.” Different name servers are authoritative for different portions of that tree. A resolver follows the hierarchy and can reuse cached answers instead of starting at the root for every request.
- An application requests a DNS record. When a browser needs the address for
www.example.com, it sends a query to a configured recursive resolver, often supplied by an internet service, company network, operating system, or public DNS operator. - The resolver checks its cache. If it has a non-expired answer or a useful delegation cached, it can respond immediately. DNS records have time-to-live values, so cached information is eventually refreshed.
- The resolver consults the root when necessary. If it lacks the required delegation, it asks a root server. The root zone contains referral information for TLDs, including the name-server information needed to continue toward
.com. - The TLD servers refer the resolver onward. The
.comname servers do not normally provide the final address forwww.example.com. They provide the delegation forexample.com, identifying that domain’s authoritative DNS service. - The authoritative service returns the requested record. The authoritative servers for
example.comanswer with the relevant record, such as an A or AAAA address record, a CNAME alias, mail-exchange information, or an explicit negative response.
This is a simplified path. Caches, local forwarding arrangements, DNSSEC validation, aliases, and other records can change the exact sequence. A normal visit does not require a fresh query to a root server each time: a resolver may retain the TLD referral and other information until their TTLs expire.
What the root zone does
The root zone is the top of the publicly delegated DNS hierarchy. It does not contain every website’s address. Instead, it tells resolvers where the authoritative name servers for each TLD can be found. ICANN’s explanation of the root server system focuses on this referral role. Once a resolver has the correct TLD delegation, it can proceed without asking the root again until its cached information needs replacement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the TLD servers do
A TLD’s registry maintains the zone data that connects registered second-level names with their authoritative DNS services. For a name under .com, the TLD servers can direct a resolver to the name servers delegated for example.com. They are not necessarily the servers hosting the website’s content, email, or application. Those services are configured by the domain owner through the authoritative DNS provider.

Main categories of TLDs
Generic top-level domains (gTLDs)
Generic TLDs include familiar endings such as .com, .org, and .info. “Generic” is a category in the DNS and ICANN policy system; it is not a guarantee that an extension is unrestricted, suitable for every organization, or available everywhere. Each registry can have particular policies, eligibility conditions, reserved names, and dispute procedures.
Country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs)
Country-code TLDs are generally associated with a country or territory. ICANN examples include .uk, .br, and .cn. The registry responsible for a ccTLD sets its own registration rules within the applicable local framework. Requirements can differ substantially, so you should check the specific registry or registrar before assuming that a local presence, citizenship, address, or documentation is required—or that none is required.
Internationalized domain names (IDNs)
An internationalized domain name can contain characters from local-language alphabets or non-Latin scripts. Users may see a Unicode form in a browser, while DNS protocols use an ASCII-compatible representation for the lookup. The displayed form and encoded form can therefore look different even though they identify the same DNS name. Script rules and anti-confusion policies vary by TLD.

TLD, domain name, subdomain, and website: the distinctions

- TLD: the final label, such as
orginicann.org. - Second-level domain: the label directly to the left of the TLD in ordinary examples, such as
icann. - Subdomain: a label further to the left, such as
eventsinevents.icann.org. The owner oficann.orgcan create and delegate subdomains without obtaining a new TLD. - Full domain name: the complete sequence of labels, such as
events.icann.org. - Website or service: the application, server, email system, or other service that uses DNS records. DNS can point a name toward a service, but the TLD itself does not host that service.
DNS labels also do not inherently prove ownership, authenticity, safety, or quality. A familiar-looking extension does not guarantee that a site is legitimate, and an unfamiliar extension does not by itself prove that a site is malicious. Evaluate the organization, certificate, content, permissions, and other security signals separately.
Registering a domain is not operating a TLD
When you register example.com, you obtain a registration under the existing .com registry, usually through a registrar or reseller. You do not own or control the .com TLD, its root-zone delegation, or the registry’s global database.
What a normal domain registration involves
- Choose an available name and an extension whose rules you meet.
- Submit the registration through a registrar, providing any required contact or eligibility information.
- Pay the registrar’s registration and renewal charges under its current terms.
- Set the domain’s authoritative name servers and DNS records.
- Renew the registration before its expiration date or follow the registrar’s recovery process if it lapses.
Availability, eligibility, renewal pricing, grace periods, transfer rules, and reserved names depend on the extension and registrar. Current prices and restrictions must be checked at the time of registration; they are not universal TLD properties.
What operating a gTLD means
Applying to operate a new generic TLD is a very different undertaking. ICANN describes it as applying to run an Internet registry business. An operator must provide registry infrastructure, policy and compliance processes, security controls, abuse handling, continuity arrangements, and other capabilities required by the applicable program and agreement. Registering a name under an existing TLD does not give an individual or company the right to apply that TLD’s rules to everyone else.

For that reason, “buy a TLD” is usually imprecise. Most people mean “register a domain name under a TLD.” A TLD application is a registry-operator process, not a larger version of an ordinary domain purchase.
How many TLDs exist, and what changed in 2026?
Counts depend on what is being counted and on the date. ICANN’s New gTLD Program statistics reported 1,241 gTLDs delegated through the 2012 program and 1,930 applications submitted, as of 31 August 2026. ICANN cautions that those figures are not adjusted for registry agreements that later terminated or TLDs subsequently removed from the root zone. They should not be presented as a timeless total of all currently active extensions.
| Figure or event | Meaning | Date and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1,241 delegated gTLDs | Strings from the 2012 New gTLD Program that had been delegated into the root | ICANN program statistics, 31 August 2026; later terminations or root-zone removals are not adjusted for |
| 1,930 applications | Applications submitted in that program, not necessarily successful or delegated strings | ICANN program statistics, 31 August 2026 |
| 2026-round application list published | ICANN published applied-for strings, applying entities, preliminary contention sets, and public portions of applications | Announcement dated 7 October 2026; publication is not proof that a string is live |
The 7 October 2026 announcement is an application milestone. Evaluation, contention resolution, contracting, technical testing, and delegation are separate steps. An applied-for string should not be described as an operating TLD until it has actually been delegated and is available through the DNS root.
How to choose an extension for a domain
If your goal is to register a name, compare the extension on practical grounds rather than assuming that one ending automatically improves visibility or trust. A useful checklist is:
Best Value
- 【No Drill Mounted】Cable management tray can be assembled in as little as 3 minutes or less-simply. Side clips easily clampe the edge of desk, pass through the holes on the sides, and secure excess cables with baskets. Desk cable management supports inward or outward installation to meet your needs in different scenarios, and provides you with great convenience when collecting and organizing wires.
- 【Rubber Pad Protects Desk】Wire organizer under desk built-in soft rubber pads on the clamp protect your desk from scratches, so you will not damage your furniture or office.
- 【Sturdy and Beautiful】Cord management under desk is made of high-quality carbon steel and holds about 15 lbs. The wire basket has 2 holes on each side of the tray to enable your cables to pass freely. Cable baskets are suitable for desk thickness use from 0.4" to 2.4".
- 【Space Saving & Keep Organized】Desk cable management tray holds all your power cords, outlet strips, USB hubs and computer transformers hidden from your feet, and the data cables will not enter the vacuum cleaner to keep your desk clean and tidy. Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
- Availability: Is the exact name available, and are close alternatives likely to cause confusion?
- Eligibility: Does the registry require a local presence, category membership, documentation, or a particular use?
- Audience signal: Does the extension communicate a geographic or organizational association that your visitors will understand?
- Renewal terms: What are the current registration, renewal, transfer, redemption, and privacy terms at the registrar you would use?
- Operational support: Can your DNS provider, email systems, certificate tooling, and monitoring services handle the chosen name?
These factors are extension-specific. There is no general rule in the DNS standards that a particular TLD ranks a site higher in search results, loads faster, or makes a business more trustworthy. Those outcomes depend on the website, its infrastructure, its reputation, and user behavior.
Common TLD misconceptions and fixes
“The TLD is the whole domain.”
Fix: In example.com, only com is the TLD. The complete domain name includes the second-level label and, when present, any subdomains.
“Every visit starts with a root-server query.”
Fix: Recursive resolvers cache referrals and answers. A root query is needed only when the resolver lacks usable information or its cached data has expired.

Fix: A registrar sells or manages registrations under one or more registries. The registry operator maintains the TLD’s registration database and DNS delegation, while ICANN’s root-zone process covers the global delegation of many gTLDs.
“An extension tells me whether a site is safe.”
Fix: A TLD is a namespace category and routing level. It does not authenticate the site’s operator or guarantee the content.
“An application announcement means a new TLD is live.”
Fix: Applications must pass later program stages before a string is delegated into the root. The 2026 application publication was not a launch list.
The practical takeaway
A TLD is the DNS label at the far right of a domain name, one level below the root. Its registry helps resolvers move from the root toward the authoritative servers for a registered second-level domain. Caching makes this hierarchy efficient, and delegation keeps responsibility distributed among root, TLD, and domain name servers. When you register a domain, you are using an existing TLD; operating a new gTLD is a separate registry business and policy process.
