A top-level domain (TLD) is the last part of a domain name: the letters after its final dot. In icann.org, for example, .org is the TLD. TLDs sit at the top of the Domain Name System’s naming hierarchy, and the extension you can register is different from the registry that operates it.
What is a top-level domain?
A TLD is the final label in a domain name, after the last dot. In icann.org, .org is the TLD. It is one part of the DNS hierarchy: the system that organizes domain names and helps direct internet traffic. Only extensions recognized in the DNS root zone function as TLDs. ICANN’s TLD FAQ explains the role of TLDs and their registry operators.
ICANN’s New gTLD Program defines a generic TLD as “an Internet extension—the characters that come after the dot in a URL, such as icann.org.” That wording is useful shorthand, though the broader TLD category also includes country-code extensions.
How the parts of a domain name fit together
Read a domain from right to left to identify its hierarchy. In events.icann.org, the labels have distinct roles:

.org: the top-level domain.icann: the second-level domain, immediately before the TLD.events: a subdomain, also called a third-level domain, placed before the second-level domain.
Subdomains let an organization create separate names within a domain it controls; they are not separate TLDs.
What are the main types of TLD?
Generic top-level domains
Generic TLDs, or gTLDs, include familiar extensions such as .com, .net, and .org, as well as newer extensions. The category is broader than the traditional, widely recognized names. ICANN’s overview of the New gTLD Program says the 2012 program added more than 1,200 new unique names. ICANN cites .futbol and .pizza among its examples. That is a historical figure for that program, not a current total of all TLDs.

Country-code top-level domains
Country-code TLDs, or ccTLDs, are associated with countries or territories. Examples include .uk, .br, and .cn. Their association can make a domain’s intended geographic audience clearer, but the extension alone does not establish where a site operates or who it serves.
Who controls a TLD, and what does a registry do?
TLDs recognized by the DNS are represented in the root zone. A registry operator manages the registry database for a TLD, including nameserver information for registered domain names. The registry is therefore not the same thing as an individual domain owner: the operator maintains the extension’s registry, while organizations and people register names beneath existing extensions.

Registering a domain is not the same as creating a TLD
If you want a web address such as example.com, you are generally looking to register an available name under an existing extension through a domain registrar. You are not applying to create or operate .com.
Applying for a new gTLD is a different undertaking. An applicant seeks to operate an Internet registry business that supports the DNS; it is not simply choosing an extension for a personal website. ICANN’s New gTLD Program describes this program and its application process.

What is happening in ICANN’s 2026 new gTLD round?
ICANN’s 2026 New gTLD Program application window ran from 30 April through 12 August 2026. On 7 October 2026, ICANN announced that applications for the round had been published, including the proposed strings, applicant entities, and preliminary contention sets. Publication means those applications have been disclosed; it does not mean every proposed string has been approved or added to the DNS root zone. How should you choose a domain extension?
There is no universally best TLD established by the evidence here. Consider what the extension communicates to the people you want to reach, whether it fits the name and purpose of your site, and whether you are registering a name or pursuing registry operation. A TLD’s category and the operator behind it can help explain what the extension represents; they do not, by themselves, prove that a site will attract more traffic, earn greater trust, or rank better in search results.
