A Token Ring connector is the physical interface on a Token Ring network adapter, port, or cable—but there is no single universal Token Ring plug. IBM documentation shows examples such as RJ-45 and 9-pin D-shell (DB-9) connectors, as well as an IBM Cabling System data connector. To identify the right cable, check the exact device model, both connector ends, the cabling type, and the network speed.

What a Token Ring connector does

The connector is the physical termination on a network interface or cable. It is not the multistation access unit (MAU or MSAU): the MAU/MSAU is the hardware that connects devices to the ring, while a cable links a station’s adapter to the network cabling. IBM’s OS/400 LAN, Frame-Relay and ATM Support V4R2 describes an adapter cable with a nine-pin D connector at the system end and a modular plug at the cabling end. The manual says each multistation access unit can give up to eight attached devices access to a ring.

Token Ring is associated with IEEE 802.5. The IBM system examples discussed in that guide use 4 Mbps or 16 Mbps transmission, and adapters on the same ring must operate at the same speed. Those details apply to the documented equipment; they do not establish requirements for every Token Ring product.

Connector types documented on IBM equipment

Connector or arrangement What IBM documents What to check
RJ-45 An OSA-2 Token Ring port uses RJ-45 to connect to a MAU/MSAU and supports shielded twisted pair (STP) or unshielded twisted pair (UTP). IBM also lists optional conversion to an IBM Cabling System data connector or a female 9-pin D-shell connector. See IBM’s OSA-2 Token Ring port documentation. Confirm the device model, cable type, and network-side connector. An RJ-45 shape alone does not establish Ethernet compatibility.
9-pin D-shell / DB-9 IBM documents a nine-pin D connector at the system end of an adapter cable and a DB-9 D-shell receptacle on later OSA-Express Token Ring equipment. See the OSA-2 documentation and IBM eServer zSeries 900 Technical Guide. Verify whether the connector is on the adapter or network side and which cabling system the device expects.
IBM Cabling System data connector IBM lists an optional RJ-45-to-ICS data connector for the cited equipment. See IBM’s OSA-2 Token Ring port documentation. Identify the actual network-side receptacle before sourcing a conversion piece.
Modular plug on an adapter cable The IBM system guide illustrates a modular plug at the cabling end of an adapter cable, paired with a nine-pin D connector at the system end. See OS/400 LAN, Frame-Relay and ATM Support V4R2. Do not assume a standard Ethernet cable will work based on appearance; match the documented wiring and endpoints.

These are examples for specific IBM equipment, not a complete catalog of every vendor’s Token Ring interfaces. Legacy installations may use model-specific connectors and cabling, so the adapter or port model number is a better starting point than the plug’s appearance.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to identify the right cable or adapter

  1. Find the adapter or device model. Read its label or system documentation; connector names alone can be ambiguous.
  2. Identify the network-side endpoint. Determine whether the cable connects to a MAU/MSAU, another network port, or a cabling-system connector.
  3. Match both ends and the cable type. Check the station-side connector, network-side connector, and whether the equipment requires STP, UTP, or a specific conversion adapter.
  4. Check the supported Token Ring speed. The cited IBM system examples include 4 Mbps and 16 Mbps, and devices on a given ring must use the same speed.
  5. Apply distance limits only to the documented equipment. The z900 OSA-Express guide specifies Category 5 UTP up to 100 m for its RJ-45 connection; its STP connection uses a DB-9 D-shell. Do not apply that limit to another adapter without checking its manual.

Does a 9-pin port or RJ-45 plug prove it is Token Ring?

No. A connector’s shape by itself cannot establish that an unidentified port is Token Ring. IBM documentation shows both RJ-45 and DB-9 on particular Token Ring equipment, but those shapes are not enough to identify an unknown device or confirm cable compatibility. Check the model number and its documentation, then verify the cabling and speed requirements before connecting or buying anything.
