A temple wearable is a sensor-equipped device worn on or beside the temple, often built into the arms of eyeglasses. It is a form factor, not a single technology standard: one device may monitor light and nearby distance, another may estimate gaze, and another may derive an optical wellness index from tissue. You must check the exact sensors, algorithms, validation and privacy design before assuming what any temple-worn device can measure.

The most prominent health claim in the available material comes from Temple. Its product page calls BrainFlow a “proxy for Cerebral Blood Flow, measured in real time from your temple.” An independent September 2026 preprint describes the output more narrowly as a relative, baseline-normalized optical index derived from multi-wavelength photoplethysmography (PPG). That is not the same as a direct measurement of blood flow in the brain, an EEG, or a clinical diagnosis.

What the term “temple wearable” means

“Temple wearable” describes where a device sits: against the side of the head near the temple, frequently inside an eyeglass arm. It does not identify a particular sensor, operating system, measurement accuracy or medical approval. The temple is simply a useful location for several kinds of sensing.

An eyeglass arm can hold optical emitters and detectors close to skin, point sensors outward toward the environment, or carry inertial and contact sensors that detect movement and fit. Because the same mechanical form can contain very different electronics, two temple wearables may have almost nothing in common beyond their placement.

Interpret every output according to its signal chain:

  • Direct signal: the sensor records a physical quantity such as acceleration, illuminance or optical intensity.
  • Derived estimate: software converts those signals into a value such as color temperature, distance, gaze direction or an activity label.
  • Proprietary index: a company combines several features into a score whose physiological meaning may be narrower than its marketing name suggests.

Fit, skin contact, lighting, motion, calibration and the device’s algorithm all affect the result. A sensor mounted at the temple does not automatically measure the brain or provide medical-grade data.

What Temple’s BrainFlow device measures

The company’s description

Temple’s official product page says: “BrainFlow is Temple’s proxy for Cerebral Blood Flow, measured in real time from your temple.” Read that as the manufacturer’s description of its metric, not as proof that the device directly measures cerebral blood flow. The product is presented as an early-access wearable rather than an established clinical instrument. See the Temple product page for the company’s current wording.

What the optical sensor records

A September 2026 medRxiv preprint describes a continuously worn, multi-wavelength reflectance PPG sensor positioned over the anterior temple. It uses green, red and infrared light. The detector observes changes in returned light associated with blood-volume and tissue optical properties; software then extracts several feature families.

  • PPG-derived perfusion features.
  • Optical changes associated with hemoglobin.
  • Morphology of the cardiac pulse waveform.

The resulting “Brain Flow index” is described as a relative, dimensionless measure of hemodynamic change normalized to each participant’s own baseline. In practical terms, it is designed to show change from that wearer’s reference condition, not to report an absolute blood-flow value in standard clinical units.

How it was evaluated

The preprint compared the index with transcranial Doppler measurements during exercise and postural transitions in healthy adults. That comparison asks whether the wearable’s changes track changes observed by an established blood-flow method under those conditions. It does not establish that every reading equals cerebral blood flow, nor that the device diagnoses a disease.

The manuscript says the algorithm is proprietary and closed-source. The authors evaluated its inputs and outputs rather than inspecting the internal code. Because the paper is a preprint, its findings have not yet completed peer review. Treat the result as preliminary evidence about concordance, not as clinical validation or a substitute for a clinician’s test. The full manuscript is available at medRxiv.

Is a Temple wearable an EEG?

Not on the evidence available for Temple’s device. EEG records electrical activity from the scalp using electrodes. The Temple description and the 2026 preprint describe optical PPG sensing with light sources and photodetectors, not scalp electrical recording. Calling BrainFlow an EEG would therefore misidentify the sensing modality.

More generally, a temple-mounted product could include electrodes in a future design, but its location alone does not tell you whether it is an EEG. Look for explicit documentation of electrode contacts, electrical potentials and EEG channels.

The Visual Environment Evaluation Tool (VEET) is a pair of research temple arms attached to eyeglass frames. Its sensor suite is outward-facing and environmental rather than a brain monitor:

Sensor or output What it measures Published specification
Time-of-flight distance sensor Optical distance to nearby objects 64-point ranging grid; typically measurable to about 2 m indoors
Ambient-light sensor Illuminance Below 0.1 to above 100,000 lux
Spectral sensor Light intensity across spectral channels Used to characterize the surrounding light spectrum
Six-axis inertial measurement unit Acceleration and rotational movement/orientation Reports motion and orientation
Overall sensor sampling Collection rate for the listed sensors Maximum 0.5 Hz

VEET software can process the raw spectral channels into estimates such as spectral power distribution or color temperature, but those are calculated outputs rather than direct sensor readings. Likewise, an activity label inferred from the inertial unit is an algorithmic classification; the IMU directly senses movement, not “walking” or “sitting” as biological categories.

Privacy and intended use

VEET documentation says the device has no camera and no microphone. It is intended to help researchers study visual-environment exposure, not to serve as a consumer medical device. Its technical overview and support documentation are available at Project VEET’s technical overview and technical support page.

Can temple-mounted glasses track your eyes?

Yes, some prototypes can estimate gaze, but eye tracking is not a universal feature of temple wearables. A Samsung Research publication dated November 20, 2023 describes a temple-mounted near-infrared eye-tracker prototype. It uses a patterned near-infrared mirror for calibration and estimates gaze from the optical signals captured around the eyeglass temple. The publication is a prototype report, not evidence that ordinary glasses with temple sensors can track gaze. Details are in Samsung Research’s publication summary.

Eye-tracking performance depends on alignment with the eye, frame geometry, calibration, reflections and how consistently the glasses sit on the wearer. A device that lacks the appropriate infrared emitters, detectors and calibration method cannot gain gaze tracking merely because it is worn at the temple.

Can a temple wearable tell whether glasses are being worn correctly?

A separate smart-glasses proof of concept combined temple temperature sensors, capacitive contact sensors and an accelerometer. The system used contact and temperature near the temple to infer wear position and the accelerometer to recognize activity. It demonstrates that the temple can support fit and usage sensing in addition to environmental or optical measurements.

The study also identifies important limitations. Temperature sensors responded too slowly for quick wear-position feedback and were strongly affected by ambient temperature. Results varied with frame fit and user characteristics. These findings apply to that proof of concept, not to every smart-glasses design. The peer-reviewed article is available through the National Library of Medicine.

What different temple-wearable categories measure

Category Typical target Direct reading or inference? Important qualification
Optical physiological wearable Changes in tissue optical response and a proprietary hemodynamic index PPG features are optical measurements; the health index is derived Temple’s BrainFlow is described by the company as a cerebral-blood-flow proxy; the preprint calls it a relative, baseline-normalized index
Environmental glasses Illuminance, spectral composition, nearby distance and motion Light, distance and inertial signals are direct sensor outputs; color or activity labels are derived VEET is a research instrument with a 0.5 Hz maximum sampling rate
Gaze-tracking glasses Eye position and viewing direction Gaze is estimated from near-infrared optical signals and calibration Demonstrated in a Samsung Research prototype, not a universal glasses feature
Wear-position/activity system Whether frames are seated correctly and what movement pattern is occurring Temperature, capacitive contact and acceleration are sensed; status and activity are inferred Fit and ambient temperature can reduce responsiveness and consistency

How to judge a temple wearable’s accuracy

Start with the modality

Ask what physical quantity reaches the sensor. An IMU measures acceleration and angular motion. A light sensor measures optical intensity. A time-of-flight unit measures the return time of emitted light. PPG detects changes in reflected light from tissue. The advertised label may be one or more processing steps beyond those raw signals.

Separate validation from comparison

A comparison with another instrument can show that two measurements change together in a particular experiment. It does not automatically establish diagnostic accuracy, absolute calibration or performance in other populations and conditions. For BrainFlow, the available study involved healthy adults during exercise and postural transitions, used transcranial Doppler as a comparator, and remains a preprint.

Check placement and calibration

The temple must remain in the intended position. Hair, skin contact, frame pressure, head movement, sweat, ambient light and lens or mirror alignment can change optical signals. Eye trackers require calibration; baseline-normalized physiological indices require a meaningful baseline. A loose or frequently repositioned frame can turn a physiological change into a fit artifact, or hide a real change.

Look for operating limits

For VEET, the published figures are a maximum 0.5 Hz sampling rate, a 64-point distance grid, a typical indoor range of about 2 m and an illuminance span from below 0.1 to above 100,000 lux. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance outcomes. Do not extend them to a different temple wearable.

Ask how transparent the algorithm is

Open details about channels, preprocessing, calibration and output units make a measurement easier to interpret. A closed algorithm can still produce a useful personal trend, but its score should not be treated as a transparent clinical variable. Proprietary scoring also makes it harder to compare values between devices or between people.

Privacy questions to ask before wearing one

Temple placement puts electronics close to the face, so privacy depends on more than the sensor name. Before using a device, check:

  • Whether it has a camera or microphone. VEET explicitly says it has neither.
  • Whether raw optical, motion or gaze data leave the device.
  • Where data are stored, how long they are retained and whether they are shared.
  • Whether Bluetooth or another connection is required continuously.
  • Whether the product is a research prototype, an early-access product or a generally available consumer device.

A device can avoid cameras and microphones yet still collect sensitive movement, gaze or physiological data. Read the product’s data and consent terms separately from its sensor specifications.

A practical checklist for identifying what a device can measure

  1. Identify the exact model and version. “Temple wearable” is too broad to establish capability.
  2. List every sensor. Distinguish optical, inertial, distance, spectral, capacitive, temperature and electrical sensors.
  3. Label each output. Mark it as a raw measurement, processed estimate, classification or proprietary score.
  4. Find the stated range and sampling rate. Keep the region, test condition and one-time specification attached to the number.
  5. Review validation. Note the comparator, participants, activity, publication status and whether accuracy figures are actually reported.
  6. Check fit and calibration instructions. Temple position is part of the measurement system.
  7. Review privacy and availability. Confirm cameras, microphones, connectivity, storage and whether the product is a prototype or research instrument.

What a temple wearable cannot establish by itself

  • It cannot be assumed to measure cerebral blood flow directly because a product calls its score a blood-flow proxy.
  • It cannot be called an EEG without electrodes and documented electrical brain recording.
  • It cannot be assumed to track eyes unless it has a gaze-sensing system and calibration method.
  • It cannot turn an activity classification into a direct measurement of a person’s health state.
  • It cannot provide a clinical diagnosis merely because it records a physiological signal.

The useful question is therefore not “What does a temple wearable measure?” in the singular. Ask which device, which sensor, which algorithm and which validation apply to the reading you care about.
