A subglacial lake is a body of liquid water trapped between a glacier or ice sheet and the rock or sediment beneath it. Because kilometers of ice can hide the water, scientists usually detect lakes indirectly: radar maps reflective basal interfaces, satellite altimetry tracks changes in the ice surface above filling or draining water, and seismic reflections can confirm a water column and measure its depth. Drilling is reserved for a small number of carefully selected sites when researchers need water, sediment or in-lake observations.
What a subglacial lake is
A subglacial lake occupies the ice-bed interface, not the exposed surface of an ice sheet. Water can collect where basal melting, pressure, bedrock shape and drainage pathways create a local depression or a temporary storage basin. The overlying ice may be hundreds or thousands of metres thick, so a field team cannot simply look down and see the lake.
That hidden location distinguishes a subglacial lake from a surface melt lake. Surface lakes are visible in satellite images or from aircraft; subglacial lakes are inferred from how radio waves, seismic energy and the ice surface respond to water below. A radar reflection can identify a candidate lake, but it is not a photograph and does not automatically provide a complete water-depth measurement.

NASA’s Sea Level Change Portal describes an Antarctic ice sheet about 2.2 km thick on average as broad context; that is an approximate overview value, not the thickness at every lake. The same overview estimates that basal melting produces about 65 gigatons of water each year, with much of that water entering subglacial lakes. The figure is an estimate for the Antarctic basal-water system, not a measurement of one individual lake.

Why hidden lakes matter to ice-sheet behavior
Subglacial lakes are components of a connected water system. Water can move between lakes and channels beneath the ice, changing lubrication at the bed and influencing how readily ice flows toward the ocean. NASA’s overview links this drainage network to ice-sheet evolution, while its ICESat-2 account notes that changes in subglacial water storage are relevant to the speed of ice flowing toward the Southern Ocean.
Not every lake fills, drains or affects ice in the same way. Some may be relatively stable; others can exchange water in episodic events. A study of one basin therefore cannot be treated as a universal model for all Antarctic lakes, and there is no definitive current worldwide lake count established by the sources cited here.
How scientists detect a lake through the ice
Radar and radio-echo sounding: finding the basal signature
Airborne or ground-based radar sends radio waves through the ice and records echoes from internal layers and the ice-bed boundary. Liquid water usually produces a strong, comparatively smooth basal reflection, so radar profiles can reveal candidate lakes and help trace their outlines across a survey grid. Radio-echo sounding is the broader geophysical approach that uses these echoes to characterize the ice and its bed.

The British Antarctic Survey’s record for Subglacial Lake CECs illustrates what this method can establish: radar observations identified a basal feature consistent with a lake and provided a map for follow-up work. Radar interpretation still depends on signal quality, bed conditions and the assumptions used to distinguish water from other bright reflectors. It is therefore best viewed as a remote detection and mapping method, not direct visual confirmation or a full bathymetric survey.
Satellite altimetry: tracking the surface response
Laser or radar altimeters on satellites measure the elevation of the ice surface. If a subglacial lake fills, the ice above it can bulge; if the lake drains, the surface can lower. Repeated elevation measurements reveal these changes over time, allowing scientists to identify active water movement beneath otherwise featureless ice.
NASA’s account of ICESat-2 explains that its laser measurements can detect such height changes. The study discussed there combined observations from the original ICESat mission and the European Space Agency’s CryoSat-2. As glaciologist Helen Amanda Fricker of Scripps Institution of Oceanography put it in NASA’s report: “If there are lakes filling and draining, we will detect them with ICESat-2.” The satellite is measuring the surface response, not seeing through the ice to the water itself.

Seismic reflection: confirming water and measuring depth
Seismic surveys send controlled energy into the ice and record echoes from boundaries below. At a lake, reflections can arrive from the upper and lower water interfaces. The time taken for those echoes to return, combined with the seismic velocity model, yields the thickness of the water column. This makes seismic reflection particularly useful for confirmation and bathymetry after radar has identified a promising target.

For Subglacial Lake CECs in West Antarctica, seismic reflection profiles were collected in 2016 and 2022. The British Antarctic Survey and the NERC EDS UK Polar Data Centre report a maximum water depth of 301.3 ± 1.5 metres and an estimated volume of 2.5 ± 0.3 cubic kilometres. Both figures come from that specific lake and those surveys, and the stated uncertainties are part of the measurements; they are not typical values for every subglacial lake.
Drilling and instruments: obtaining direct evidence
Remote geophysics answers where a lake is and how it behaves, but it cannot supply a water sample or let scientists inspect sediment. Direct access requires drilling through the ice, maintaining a borehole and managing the risk of introducing contaminants. Because the work is expensive and technically difficult, geophysical characterization normally comes first.

The British Antarctic Survey describes clean drilling and sediment coring at Lake Hodgson near the retreating margin of the Antarctic Peninsula. That setting is more accessible than a deep interior lake, and the project demonstrates why site choice matters. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory reported a different approach for the WISSARD project at Lake Whillans: a camera-bearing mini-submarine was lowered through an approximately 800-metre borehole to explore the lake. These are project-specific examples, not routine access procedures for all lakes.
What each method can and cannot tell you
| Method | Main question answered | How direct is it? | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Radar or radio-echo sounding | Where are basal interfaces and lake candidates? | Remote and indirect | Surveying broad areas and outlining possible lakes | A bright basal echo requires interpretation and does not by itself give complete water depth |
| Satellite laser or radar altimetry | Is the ice surface changing as water fills or drains? | Remote and indirect | Repeated monitoring of active storage changes | Measures surface elevation response, not the lake directly |
| Seismic reflection | Is there a water column, and how deep is it? | Field-based and targeted | Confirming a target and resolving water-column depth | Requires field deployment, processing and a suitable seismic velocity model |
| Drilling, cameras and coring | What are the water, sediment and in-lake conditions? | Direct | Collecting samples or making observations inside a lake | Costly, technically demanding and dependent on careful site selection and contamination control |
How a typical investigation proceeds
- Define the scientific question. Researchers first decide whether they need a regional inventory, evidence of active drainage, a depth measurement or a physical sample. The answer determines the survey design.
- Screen the bed with radar. Aircraft or field teams collect radar profiles over a grid. Strong, laterally continuous basal reflections become candidate lake targets, while ice thickness and bed topography provide context.
- Compare with surface elevation records. Satellite altimetry from missions such as ICESat and CryoSat-2, and newer ICESat-2 observations, are checked for uplift or subsidence patterns. A changing surface can indicate that water is entering or leaving storage below.
- Plan targeted seismic work. If the target warrants confirmation, a field team acquires seismic reflection profiles. Echoes from the top and bottom of the water help establish the lake’s presence and estimate its depth.
- Estimate geometry and volume. Radar outlines, seismic depth points and surface or bed models are combined to calculate an area, water-depth distribution and an estimated volume. Uncertainty should remain attached to each reported value.
- Decide whether direct access is justified. Drilling is considered only after the site is characterized and the scientific benefit outweighs the logistical and environmental difficulty. A borehole, sampling system or submersible can then provide evidence that remote methods cannot.
- Monitor for change. Repeat satellite measurements and, where practical, repeat geophysical surveys show whether the lake remains stable, fills, drains or exchanges water with neighboring parts of the subglacial system.
Why radar detection is not the same as seeing a lake
Several interpretation steps separate a radar trace from a confirmed lake. Radio energy travels through ice and reflects from interfaces; the strength and shape of the return depend on the ice, the bed material, water chemistry and the geometry of the survey. A bright, flat reflector is persuasive when it is spatially coherent and agrees with other evidence, but it is still an inferred boundary.
Recommended Free Tools
Satellite measurements add a different kind of evidence. An uplift-and-subsidence pattern can show that water storage is changing, yet the signal does not identify every detail of the basin or prove that a particular reflector is liquid water. Seismic reflections improve confidence and provide depth, while drilling is required for direct samples. Scientists therefore combine methods rather than treating one instrument as a substitute for all the others.

What makes direct access difficult
- Ice thickness and remoteness: Interior Antarctic sites may require drilling through very thick ice in places far from established logistics.
- Clean access: Water and sediment samples can be compromised if drilling equipment or fluids introduce material from the surface. The Lake Hodgson work shows the importance of clean drilling and coring for a specific project.
- Small targets and uncertain geometry: A borehole must intersect the lake. Radar and seismic mapping reduce that risk by locating the target before drilling.
- Limited repeatability: A direct-access campaign is much harder to repeat than a satellite overpass, so remote monitoring remains essential after the initial visit.
- Environmental responsibility: Instruments and sampling plans must be designed to limit disturbance and contamination. The appropriate controls depend on the project and its setting; no single brief example establishes a universal protocol.
How to read claims about subglacial lakes
When evaluating a reported discovery, check which observation supports it. “Detected by radar” generally means a candidate basal reflector was mapped. “Active lake” usually refers to a measurable change in surface elevation interpreted as filling or drainage. “Depth” should come from a method that resolves the top and bottom of the water, such as seismic reflection, and should include the stated uncertainty. “Volume” is an estimate derived from mapped geometry, not a direct measurement of water in a container.
Also check the geographic and temporal scope. The CECs depth and volume values apply to one West Antarctic lake and seismic surveys from 2016 and 2022. The 65-gigaton basal-meltwater figure is an estimate in a NASA overview, not a current annual measurement for every basin. Likewise, an average Antarctic ice thickness does not describe the ice above a particular lake. Keeping those qualifications beside the numbers prevents a local result from being mistaken for a global rule.
The practical answer
Scientists study a subglacial lake by building an evidence chain. Radar and radio-echo sounding locate likely water and map its extent; satellite altimetry reveals whether the overlying surface rises or falls as storage changes; seismic reflection confirms a water column and measures its depth; and drilling or instruments provide direct samples and observations when the site can be reached safely. No single technique sees through the ice in the ordinary visual sense. Together, these measurements turn an invisible basal feature into a testable map of its position, structure and behavior.
