A spangram is the special answer in NYT Strands that names the puzzle’s theme and forms a connected path from one edge of the letter grid to the opposite edge. The remaining theme words are examples of that broader idea. To find the spangram, first infer the category suggested by the clue, then test likely words or phrases against the board’s letters and the opposite-edge path rule.
The answer may be a single word or a familiar multiword expression. It does not have to run in a straight line: what matters is that its letters touch in a continuous path and that the path reaches two opposite sides of the board. What the spangram means
The word “spangram” combines the idea of spanning the board with a thematic word or phrase. In Strands, it performs two jobs at once:

- It states the theme. The spangram is the umbrella concept that connects the puzzle’s other theme answers.
- It spans the grid. Its connected letter path starts at one edge and reaches the opposite edge.
That combination is what separates the spangram from an ordinary answer. A regular theme word might identify one member of the category; the spangram explains what the category is. If the theme words are several examples, the spangram is the label that could reasonably contain all of them.

For example, once you have found several answers that clearly belong together, ask what single category, activity, object type or familiar expression describes them collectively. That candidate is useful only if the board also allows you to trace its letters continuously from one side to the other.
It is a thematic answer, not a separate clue
The daily theme clue is the starting point for the relationship. The clue usually points toward an idea rather than spelling out the exact answer. The spangram gives that idea a concrete name. Because of this, a candidate can be semantically plausible yet still be wrong if its letters cannot be connected or if it fails to cross the board.
It can contain more than one word
Do not restrict your search to dictionary headwords. Guides to Strands note that a spangram can be a familiar phrase, so a clue that suggests a saying, title-like expression or compound idea may require spaces conceptually even though the letters are selected from the grid. Treat the phrase as one thematic answer when checking its path.
How the Strands grid and path rule work
Strands is a letter-grid word puzzle. One independent guide describes a 6-by-8 grid, while other guides explain that the board is filled by theme answers and the spangram. The exact presentation can vary with the game interface, but the solving principles are the same: select adjacent letters to form an answer, and use each board letter as part of a valid theme answer or the spangram.
Connected letters matter
A candidate is not valid merely because all of its letters appear somewhere on the board. You must be able to move from one selected letter to the next through touching cells, without jumping across gaps. The path may bend, turn and wind through the grid. When you evaluate a possible spangram, trace the whole sequence rather than checking the letters independently.
Opposite edges are the spatial test
The spangram must connect two opposite edges. In practical terms, a path that begins at the left edge must eventually reach the right edge, or one that begins at the top must reach the bottom. A path that touches two adjacent sides, remains in the interior or stops short of the far side does not satisfy the defining test.
The path does not need to be a straight line. A winding route can still span the board, provided every step is connected and the endpoints lie on opposite edges. This spatial requirement is often the fastest way to reject an attractive but incorrect thematic guess.

Theme words and the spangram share the board
The other theme answers are not unrelated filler. They are members or examples of the concept expressed by the spangram. Once you discover a few, they provide evidence about the umbrella term. Conversely, an accurate spangram can make the remaining theme words easier to recognize because you know what kind of answers to seek.
Step-by-step method for finding the spangram
1. Read the clue as a category prompt
Start with the theme clue before selecting random strings of letters. Translate the clue into a question such as: “What group could include several different answers?” Consider categories, shared functions, physical types, cultural references and common phrases. Keep the interpretation broad at first; a clue may point to a relationship rather than a literal object.
Write down a few umbrella candidates mentally or on paper. At this stage, you are generating hypotheses, not committing to one answer. A good candidate should be broad enough to include multiple likely theme words but specific enough to match the wording of the clue.
2. Look for likely vocabulary on the board
Scan the grid for distinctive letter sequences associated with your candidate concepts. Long or unusual combinations are especially informative because they are less likely to occur by chance. If the clue suggests a phrase, inspect the board for the phrase’s component words or a continuous sequence that could represent them.

Do not assume that the first recognizable word is the spangram. It may be one of the ordinary theme answers. The candidate must satisfy both the semantic test and the edge-to-edge path test.
3. Trace each candidate as a continuous path
Use your finger or cursor to follow the letters in order. Check every transition between adjacent cells. When a path branches, choose the route that preserves the spelling and keeps the answer connected. Continue until you can determine whether the sequence reaches an opposite edge.
If the letters form the right concept but the final cells cannot reach the far side, discard that candidate rather than forcing a diagonal jump or skipping a cell. The board is part of the definition; a thematic match without a legal route is not the spangram.

4. Confirm that it names the broader theme
After tracing a legal path, ask whether the candidate explains the clue and could contain the other theme answers. A word that spans the board but has no meaningful relationship to the clue is not enough. The strongest solution satisfies all three checks:

5. Use discovered theme words as evidence
Finding several ordinary theme words can reveal the spangram indirectly. Compare their meanings, grammatical forms and real-world relationship. If the answers are all examples of a type, search for the type name. If they are actions, look for the shared activity. If they are parts of a phrase or cultural set, consider the expression that unites them.
Then return to the board and test the inferred umbrella term. The semantic pattern narrows the vocabulary; the grid confirms or rejects the specific spelling and route.
6. Use the in-game hint only when needed
According to independent guides, entering three valid words that are not theme answers unlocks an in-game hint. The hint highlights a theme word. It does not necessarily reveal the spangram directly, so treat it as vocabulary assistance rather than a guaranteed solution.
Once the highlighted theme word appears, add it to the set of evidence about the puzzle’s category. Reconsider your umbrella candidates and test whether one can span the board. This approach preserves the distinction between discovering an example and identifying the theme-naming answer.

When several candidates seem plausible, score each one against the same three criteria instead of relying on intuition. The following checklist keeps the semantic and spatial tests separate:

Apply the checks in that order when solving from the clue: theme fit reduces the search space, continuity verifies the spelling, and opposite-edge reach provides the defining confirmation. If you are evaluating a board-first guess, you may notice a long path before understanding its meaning; in that case, postpone acceptance until the clue and other answers support it.

What to do when the spangram is a phrase
A multiword spangram can feel less obvious because solvers often search for one uninterrupted dictionary word. Instead, treat the phrase as a single thematic unit. Ask whether the clue evokes a familiar expression, named concept or combination of words that naturally groups the other answers.
Search by meaning before exact wording
List phrases that would describe the discovered theme words, then inspect the board for their letters. Do not force an approximate synonym simply because it fits the grid. The phrase must both match the clue and be spelled by the available connected cells.
Check the full route, not just the phrase’s first word
The path requirement applies to the complete answer. A first word may trace neatly toward an edge while the remaining letters become disconnected. Continue through every letter and verify that the route still reaches the opposite side. If the interface displays spaces conceptually, select only the letter cells in their written order.

Confusing a theme word with the spangram
A word can fit the clue and be a valid answer without naming the category. If it describes one example rather than the group, keep looking for the broader term. Compare at least two or three discovered theme words before deciding what the spangram should mean.
Assuming the path must be straight
The spangram’s path can turn. Rejecting a candidate because it bends removes many legal solutions. Follow the connected route cell by cell and focus on whether the endpoints reach opposite edges.
Accepting a semantic match with no legal route
Meaning alone cannot override the grid. If a candidate cannot be traced without a jump, skipped letter or reused cell that the interface does not permit, it is not the answer you are seeking. Return to the clue and generate another synonym or phrase.

Some themes are naturally expressed as phrases. If several ordinary answers point toward an expression, include multiword candidates in your search. Check the letters and path exactly as you would for a single word.

Expecting the hint to name the spangram
The three-word threshold unlocks a hint that highlights a theme word, according to the guides. Use that highlighted answer to infer the category; do not assume the highlighted word itself is the spangram or that the next hint will identify it automatically.
Overfitting to one discovered answer
One word can suggest several categories. A reliable interpretation must account for the clue, the other theme answers and the board geometry. If your candidate explains only one answer, treat it as provisional and seek a broader relationship.
A practical solving workflow
For a repeatable routine, move between meaning and geometry rather than spending too long on either one:
- Interpret the clue. Identify two or three possible categories or expressions.
- Scan for anchors. Look for long, distinctive letter runs that could belong to those categories.
- Trace ordinary answers. Confirm a few theme words and note what they have in common.
- Form an umbrella candidate. Convert the shared relationship into a likely word or phrase.
- Test connectivity. Follow every letter in order with no jumps.
- Test span. Verify that the path reaches opposite edges, not merely a corner or adjacent side.
- Use a hint if necessary. Enter three valid non-theme words to unlock a highlighted theme word, then update your category hypothesis.
- Recheck the complete set. Make sure the proposed spangram explains the clue and the theme answers together.
This workflow is a reasoning framework, not a guarantee of the fewest moves. Its value is that every guess has a clear reason for being accepted or rejected.
Spangram terminology and spelling
Use spangram consistently when referring to the Strands answer. PlayStrandsNYT notes that “spanagram” is a common misspelling, but the guides use “spangram” for the term. If you are explaining the puzzle to another player, define it once as the theme-naming answer that spans opposite edges; after that, the shorter term is unambiguous.
How authoritative are these rules?
