A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) makes electricity by using oxygen ions to drive an electrochemical reaction with fuel across a solid, usually ceramic, electrolyte. It is not a complete power plant by itself: cells are assembled into stacks and modules, then integrated with fuel and air equipment, electrical conversion and, in some installations, heat recovery. SOFCs are used chiefly for stationary and distributed power, including facility power, microgrids and combined heat and power (CHP). Their high operating temperature can enable fuel flexibility and useful heat recovery, but also brings slow startup and demanding thermal and durability requirements.
How a solid oxide fuel cell works
An SOFC has three core parts: a cathode, an anode and a solid electrolyte between them. Air reaches the cathode, where oxygen molecules take on electrons and become oxygen ions. The electrolyte conducts those ions through the solid material to the anode. There, oxygen ions react with fuel at the anode-electrolyte interface, releasing electrons. Those electrons travel through an external circuit to do electrical work before returning to the cell. NETL describes the electrolyte’s role in its SOFC operating-principle explainer.
The distinction between the internal reaction and the external circuit matters: electricity is generated by an electrochemical process, not by burning fuel in a conventional combustion chamber. Fuel is still consumed, however, and its production and delivery have environmental impacts. An SOFC running on natural gas, for example, is not automatically a zero-emissions system.
From one cell to an installation
One cell produces only a portion of the power a facility needs. Manufacturers connect many cells electrically into a stack; stacks can be assembled into modules. A complete installation also needs equipment to deliver and condition fuel and air, manage temperature, and convert the stack’s direct-current output into usable alternating current. A design may include heat-recovery equipment as well. NETL’s cell-to-system description distinguishes the electrochemical cell from the surrounding equipment needed to deliver power and heat.

That system-level distinction is useful when assessing specifications. A cell’s chemistry does not tell you the installed system’s electrical output, fuel requirements, startup behavior or usable heat production. Those depend on the stack and the balance of plant—the fuel, air, thermal, electrical and control equipment surrounding it.
SOFCs and solid oxide electrolysis cells are related, but not the same use
A solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) uses related solid-oxide principles in reverse: it consumes electricity to produce hydrogen. An SOFC, by contrast, consumes fuel in an electrochemical reaction to produce electricity. The two technologies are related, but hydrogen production by an SOEC should not be confused with electricity generation by an SOFC. A solid-oxide cell-to-system explainer describes both directions.
Why SOFCs operate hot—and what that means
The solid electrolyte conducts oxygen ions at high temperature. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says SOFC operating temperatures can reach as high as 1,000°C (1,830°F); that is a general upper-range description, not a universal operating setpoint. At these temperatures, some systems can reform fuel internally, and the technology can be configured for different fuels. DOE’s overview also notes that the high-temperature process can support efficient electricity generation and cogeneration, in which useful heat is captured alongside power. See DOE’s Types of Fuel Cells for its general SOFC description.

The same heat that can be useful is also an engineering constraint. A system has to manage hot materials and thermal gradients, and a cold unit must heat up before it can operate at its intended conditions. DOE identifies slow startup, the need for thermal shielding and durability constraints as challenges. Those characteristics make an SOFC a better fit for planned, sustained stationary operation than for an application that repeatedly needs an immediate start.
Fuel flexibility is specific to the system
“Fuel flexible” does not mean every SOFC can accept every fuel without changes. Fuel compatibility depends on the particular stack, fuel-processing equipment and operating design. Natural gas is used in a documented demonstration: NETL reported in November 2024 that its BlueGen 15 2.0 unit was operating on natural gas. NETL said that model could use natural gas, hydrogen, bio-methane and synthetic methane, but those are model-specific capabilities, not a universal list for all SOFC products. The NETL demonstration report gives the installation details.
Vendor claims can describe still other fuel pathways, but they should remain attached to the vendor’s own technology and fuel-processing arrangements. For example, Ceres says its systems can be configured for natural gas, biogas, methanol, ammonia and e-methane, and describes a 450–630°C “sweet spot” for its technology. These statements do not establish a general fuel list or temperature range for the entire SOFC category; they are company-specific claims in its fuel-flexibility article.

Efficiency: electricity alone versus power and heat
Efficiency figures are meaningful only when the measurement boundary is clear. DOE says SOFCs are around 60% efficient at converting fuel into electricity. Where a system captures waste heat and a nearby user can use it, DOE says total fuel-use efficiency could top 85%. The first figure is electricity conversion; the second includes useful heat recovery. They are not interchangeable ratings, and a CHP system cannot claim the benefit of recovered heat if it has nowhere useful to send that heat. These are DOE’s general figures, as presented on its fuel-cell technology page, not a guarantee for every installation.
Recommended Free Tools
Individual vendors may report a different total-efficiency figure using their own system and accounting basis. Ceres, for instance, states greater than 90% total efficiency for CHP applications on its commercial power page. Treat that as a company claim for its applications, not as directly comparable to DOE’s general figure without matching the system boundary and assumptions. A useful heat load—such as hot water or process heat close to the power system—is central to whether CHP’s added heat recovery has practical value.
Where solid oxide fuel cells are used
The clearest use case is stationary power: generating electricity at or near the facility that consumes it, sometimes with recovered heat. That can serve commercial buildings, campuses, industrial or other facilities, and microgrids. SOFCs are not primarily a plug-in consumer generator category; the documented examples are integrated commercial or demonstration systems.

Facilities and commercial distributed power
Commercial installations can be designed to supply a facility’s electricity and, where there is a suitable heat demand, useful thermal energy. Ceres describes commercial buildings, campuses and facilities as applications for distributed SOFC power and heat. It reports a Ceres–Weichai CE-certified 120 kW system on its commercial power applications page. The capacity and certification statement are vendor-reported; they should not be read as a typical output for all SOFCs.
Microgrids and resilience demonstrations
A microgrid can operate connected to a larger grid or, when configured and equipped to do so, disconnect and serve local loads in island mode. NETL’s Morgantown, West Virginia, installation was a demonstration of that kind of capability, not evidence that every SOFC system can seamlessly island or follow changing loads. In a report dated November 19, 2024, NETL said the project would assess disconnection from the grid into island mode and load following. At the time of that report, the BlueGen 15 2.0 was operating on natural gas.
NETL reported almost 1.5 kW output while the unit was operating, up to 13,000 kWh of electricity and 7,400 kWh of heat per year, and up to 89% overall efficiency. These are reported figures for that model and installation; the annual “up to” values are not guarantees for another site or duty cycle. The figures and test purpose appear in the NETL account of the demonstration.

Other program-identified applications
NETL’s SOFC program identifies data centers, microgrids, charging and fueling stations, well-head power and energy conversion networks among possible application areas, with natural-gas-based distributed electricity as a program focus. This is a list of program-identified markets, not a census showing that SOFCs are widespread in each one. NETL’s SOFC program page provides that context.
Ceres also names data centers, utility power and marine auxiliary or propulsion loads as potential uses in its own fuel-flexibility discussion. These vendor-described use cases indicate where the company sees potential; they do not prove broad deployment or equivalent maturity across those segments. The underlying operating requirements—particularly startup time, heat management and the ability to use recovered heat—still matter when deciding whether a stationary fuel-cell system fits a specific load.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to assess an SOFC system for a site
There is no single SOFC specification that answers whether a system will suit a facility. A buyer or project planner should evaluate the integrated system and the site together. The sources here do not establish a comparable lifecycle-cost dataset, so cost rankings between vendors would not be justified. These questions help define what information a project needs before comparing proposals:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- What service is required? Establish whether the system is intended for continuous power, backup, islanded microgrid operation or load following. The NETL demonstration specifically set out to test islanding and load following; those capabilities should be confirmed for any other proposed system rather than assumed.
- Which fuel is actually available? Check the supplier’s approved fuels and the required fuel cleanup, processing or reforming equipment. A technology-level statement about flexibility is not enough to establish that a particular stack and balance of plant can use a site’s fuel.
- Is there a reliable heat user? Identify the temperature, timing and amount of heat demand. Heat recovery can raise total fuel utilization only when the recovered heat is useful; otherwise, the project should be judged on its electrical performance and other system requirements.
- Can the operating schedule accommodate startup? Account for the high-temperature operating environment and the time and thermal management needed to reach operating conditions. A system expected to start immediately or cycle frequently may face a different fit than a steady stationary load.
- What does an emissions claim include? Ask which fuel is used and whether the claim covers the cell, the full installation, fuel production and delivery, or another boundary. Electrochemical conversion rather than conventional combustion does not make a carbon-containing fuel carbon-free.
- What integration and service are required? Confirm the space, air and fuel connections, electrical conversion, controls, heat interfaces, maintenance arrangements and grid or microgrid integration. Stack output alone does not describe the full installation.
For a useful comparison, request the same categories of information from each supplier: net electrical output, operating mode, fuel specification, startup expectations, heat output and conditions, efficiency definition, emissions boundary, and installation and service requirements. Keep reported demonstration results separate from guaranteed site performance and from vendor or program descriptions of potential markets.
What the figures do—and do not—say
| Figure | What it describes | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Around 60% electrical efficiency | DOE’s general description of fuel-to-electricity conversion for SOFCs. | General DOE figure; not an installation-specific guarantee. DOE source. |
| Could top 85% total fuel-use efficiency | Electricity plus useful recovered heat in cogeneration. | DOE says this is possible when waste heat is captured and used; it is not the electricity-only figure. DOE source. |
| Up to 89% overall efficiency | NETL’s reported BlueGen 15 2.0 demonstration figure. | Model/site-specific report from November 19, 2024; not a class-wide SOFC value. NETL source. |
| Greater than 90% total efficiency | Ceres’s stated figure for its CHP applications. | Vendor claim; the basis may differ from DOE’s broader figure. Ceres source. |
The figures should not be ranked as if they were measured under a common protocol. Their contexts differ: a general technology explanation, a particular demonstration and a vendor’s CHP claim. Capacity figures differ in the same way: NETL’s nearly 1.5 kW is a reported operating output for its demonstration unit, whereas Ceres reports a 120 kW commercial system. Neither figure defines the typical size of an SOFC installation.
