A SO-DIMM is a compact, unbuffered memory-module form commonly used as system memory in laptops and other space-constrained computers. It describes the module’s form factor—not its DDR generation—so the label alone cannot tell you whether a stick of RAM will work in a particular computer.
What SO-DIMM means
SO-DIMM stands for “Small Outline Dual In-Line Memory Module.” JEDEC SPD terminology expands the name as “Unbuffered Small Outline Dual In-Line Memory Module.” In practical terms, it is a compact memory module installed in a computer to provide system memory.
JEDEC describes DDR5 SODIMMs as main memory for computers, laptops and other systems. The same broad use applies to the SO-DIMM form: it is especially useful where a full-size desktop memory module would take up too much space.

SO-DIMM identifies a module’s outline and general type. DDR4 and DDR5 identify different memory generations. A module can therefore be both a SO-DIMM and DDR4, or both a SO-DIMM and DDR5; those labels answer different questions.
#1 Best Overall
- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
Generation matters because modules can differ physically and electrically. For example, the cited JEDEC DDR4 SO-DIMM specification describes a 260-pin, 1.2 V module, while JEDEC’s 2022 DDR5 SODIMM standard listing describes a 262-pin, 1.1 V module. These figures illustrate the differences between those cited standards; they do not establish which module a specific computer supports.
How to check whether a SO-DIMM will fit your computer
Before buying memory, check the computer maker’s specifications or service documentation for the exact model. Confirm all of the following rather than relying on the word “SO-DIMM” alone:
Rank #2
- [Specs] DDR3L / DDR3 1600MHz PC3L-12800 / PC3-12800 204-Pin Unbuffered Non ECC 1.35V CL11 Dual Rank 2Rx8 based 512x8
- [Size] Module Size: 16GB KIT(2x8GB Modules) Package: 2x8GB
- [Voltage] JEDEC standard 1.35V, this is a dual voltage piece and can operate at 1.35V or 1.5V
- [Compatibility] Compatible with DDR3 Laptop / Notebook PC, Mini PC, All in one Device
- [Color] PCB Color is green
- Memory generation: Identify whether the computer supports DDR4, DDR5 or another specific generation.
- Physical module type: Confirm the supported form factor and pin count. Similar-looking generations are not necessarily interchangeable.
- Voltage: Match the module requirements to the computer’s supported memory specifications.
- Capacity and speed: Check the maximum supported capacity and memory speed for the computer. The SO-DIMM label does not specify either.
The cited standards establish examples of DDR4 and DDR5 differences, not compatibility for any particular computer model. If the maker’s documentation does not clearly identify the supported module, use the computer’s exact model number to find its official memory specifications before selecting RAM.
Why a SO-DIMM is not “better or worse” than DDR4
That comparison mixes two categories. SO-DIMM is a form factor; DDR4 is a memory generation. To compare modules meaningfully, first identify the computer’s supported generation, then compare compatible modules by capacity, speed and other specifications the computer supports.
