A ROM hack is an unofficial modification of an existing video game. A creator changes the contents of a game image—often called a ROM—and usually releases a patch containing those changes. You apply that patch to a compatible copy of the original game to create the modified version.
That is different from a fan game built as a separate PC game. A fan game may run as its own program, while a ROM hack normally depends on a particular source game, region, language and version. Understanding that distinction helps you choose the right project, avoid incompatible files and interpret the creator’s installation instructions.
What a ROM hack actually is
The term “ROM hack” comes from the practice of changing the data in a read-only memory game image. In modern use, it describes a fan-made modification of an existing game rather than an entirely new commercial release. The modification can be small—such as altered dialogue, maps or difficulty—or extensive enough to feel like a substantially reworked campaign.
A ROM hack is usually distributed as a patch, not as the complete original game. The patch records the differences between the creator’s modified version and the required source file. A player applies it to a matching base file, producing a playable modified image. Because the patch describes changes against a specific source, the source file’s version, region and language matter.

“Fan-made” means the project is created outside the original publisher’s official development and release process. It does not automatically describe the project’s quality, scope or legal status. Some hacks are short experiments; others add new areas, rebalance progression or redesign much of the original game.
ROM hack, fan game and official release: the difference
People often use “fan game” and “ROM hack” interchangeably, but they refer to different technical starting points. Use the comparison below when a project’s description is unclear.

Some Pokémon fan projects made with RPG Maker-based kits are standalone games. They may imitate the series’ mechanics or presentation while remaining separate programs, so instructions for those projects will not ask you to patch a ROM.

- The release page names a specific source game, such as a particular edition of a handheld title.
- Files are described as patches and use a stated patch format rather than being presented as a complete game image.
- Instructions specify a required region, language or revision of the source game.
- The project tells you to apply the patch to your own compatible base file.
If a download is presented as a complete commercial game image, it is not simply the creator’s patch. Treat that distinction as important for both compatibility and copyright reasons.
Why patches have compatibility requirements
A patch is calculated against a particular source file. If your file differs, the patching utility may reject it, or the resulting game may crash, display corrupted graphics or behave unpredictably. Differences can include the game’s regional edition, language, revision, header data or other changes made before patching.

Read the project’s release notes before doing anything else. They should identify the base game, supported region and language, required revision and patch format. If the author publishes checksums or a version identifier, use those details to verify that your source matches. Do not assume that two files with the same title are interchangeable.
Patch formats are not universal
Creators can publish patches in different formats, and a utility that handles one format may not handle another. The project’s instructions should name the expected format and the appropriate patching method. There is no single universal tool or sequence that works for every ROM hack, so follow the release documentation rather than choosing a utility at random.
What you need before installing a ROM hack
Prepare these items before attempting to patch:
- Project documentation: The creator’s official release page, readme or installation guide.
- Base-game details: The exact source title, platform, region, language and revision requested by the creator.
- A compatible source file: A copy you are authorized to use under the laws and terms that apply to you. The available sources do not establish that owning a cartridge automatically resolves every legal question about creating or using a dump.
- The patch file: Downloaded from the project’s official release information, with its format noted.
- A compatible patching utility: One that supports the project’s stated format and your operating system.
- A backup: Keep the untouched source file separate so you can retry without stacking changes on top of an already patched file.
Optional hardware such as a controller or dedicated emulation device is not required for the patching process itself. The core workflow is digital: match the source file, apply the patch and test the resulting file in a compatible setup.
How to install a ROM hack
The exact buttons vary by patch format and operating system, but the process follows three stages. Read the project’s own release notes throughout; they take priority over generic instructions.
- Confirm the required source. On the creator’s release page, record the base game, region, language, revision and patch format. Check any checksum or version information against your authorized source file. If one requirement is unclear, resolve that before patching.
- Apply the patch. Open a patching utility that supports the stated format, select the patch as the change file and select the matching base file as the source. Choose a new output filename so the untouched source remains available. Start the operation and wait for a success message or a clearly generated output file.
- Test the output in the supported setup. Use the platform or emulator configuration named by the creator. Check that the title screen, save functions and opening sequence behave normally before investing time in a playthrough.
If the utility reports a mismatch, stop and verify the source version and language. Do not try to solve a failed patch by downloading a pre-patched commercial game file. A mismatch usually indicates that the source does not meet the project’s stated requirements, not that you need a different copy from an unknown site.

Keep your files organized
Use separate folders for the untouched source, patch and patched output. Give the output a descriptive name that includes the hack and version number. This makes it easier to apply an update, reproduce the process or remove a problematic patch without losing the original file.
Troubleshooting common installation failures

When requesting help from a project community, include the hack version, the exact source version, the patch format, the utility used and the error message. Do not upload or publicly share a commercial game image when a diagnostic description will do.
What can a ROM hack change?
There is no fixed feature list. A creator may change one system or combine many kinds of edits.
Difficulty and battle design
Some projects alter opponent teams, encounter rates, artificial-intelligence behavior, available resources or progression so that battles demand different preparation. ROM Hack Guides cites Radical Red, Pokémon Emerald Kaizo and Renegade Platinum as examples associated with harder fights. Those names illustrate a challenge-focused category; they are not an independently tested quality ranking.
Content and world structure
A hack can rearrange maps, add rooms, replace characters, change dialogue or create new objectives. The more extensive the edits, the more important the project’s version notes and documentation become, because small source differences can affect many assets.

Quality-of-life changes
Creators may streamline menus, adjust item availability, alter move behavior or remove inconveniences in the original game. These changes can make a familiar title feel different without replacing its entire story.
Visual, audio and technical edits
Graphics, music, text encoding and other low-level data can also be changed. Such edits are especially sensitive to the source revision and platform setup, so compatibility notes should be treated as requirements rather than suggestions.
How to choose a first ROM hack
Start with a hack built on a game you already know. Familiarity lets you recognize what the project changed and makes it easier to notice when a problem is a patching error rather than an intentional redesign.
Use these selection criteria
- Base game: Pick a source title you understand well enough to recognize its normal opening, controls and progression.
- Platform and source version: Confirm that the project supports your setup and clearly identifies the required region, language and revision.
- Type of change: Decide whether you want a difficulty rebalance, new content, quality-of-life adjustments or a broad rework.
- Difficulty: Read the creator’s description and warnings. A project advertised around harder battles may be a poor first choice if you want a relaxed replay.
- Documentation: Prefer projects with a maintained readme, version history and troubleshooting information.
- Save and update expectations: Check whether the author explains how updates affect existing saves and whether a clean re-patch is required.
Do not treat a list of popular names as a universal ranking. The available descriptions identify examples and categories, but they do not establish that one hack is best for every player.

A simple decision path
- Choose a familiar source game.
- Choose the kind of change you want: challenge, new content, convenience or a broad redesign.
- Filter for projects that support your platform and explicitly state the source version.
- Read the installation notes and difficulty description before downloading any files.
- Patch a clean matching source and test the opening section before committing to a long playthrough.
Are ROM hacks official?
Generally, no. A ROM hack is a fan project made outside the original publisher’s official development and distribution channels. Calling a project “official” would imply publisher authorization that the definition of a ROM hack does not provide.

Unofficial does not mean identical in every legal situation. Copyright, trademark, preservation and software-circumvention rules differ by country and by the facts of a particular project. A patch-only release may avoid distributing the complete original game file, but that fact alone does not prove that every patch, use or jurisdiction has the same legal status.
Copyright, piracy and legal uncertainty
Nintendo’s official Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ states: “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” Nintendo also describes distributing circumvention products as illegal and discusses unlawful use of those products with unauthorized copies. Nintendo UK presents a similar position regarding unauthorized online copies and circumvention devices.
Those pages are rights-holder statements, not a universal legal opinion for every country, game, patch or personal circumstance. The sources do not resolve questions such as whether a particular form of personal backup, modification or emulator use is permitted where you live. If the legal consequences matter to you, consult the law of your jurisdiction or a qualified legal professional.

- Use the creator’s patch release rather than a download that redistributes a complete commercial game image.
- Do not upload, mirror or share unauthorized copies of commercial games.
- Read the project’s notices for trademarks, assets and takedown information.
- Keep your use within the permissions and laws that apply to your location.
- Do not assume that possessing original hardware automatically answers every legal question about making or using a digital dump.
Patch-only releases versus pre-patched files
A patch-only release separates the creator’s changes from the original game data. The player supplies the compatible source and creates the output locally. A pre-patched file combines both, which can make installation appear simpler but may redistribute copyrighted game content and may not reveal which source version was used.
For compatibility and legal clarity, follow the project’s intended patch workflow. If a release does not explain the required source or patch format, treat that lack of documentation as a warning sign and look for the creator’s official instructions.
