A reverse proxy is a server that accepts requests for one or more web apps and forwards each request to the right app behind it. For example, a request to photos.example.com can be routed to a photo app listening on a private address and port. That gives self-hosters one place to manage hostnames and, in some setups, HTTPS—but a proxy alone does not secure an app.
How a reverse proxy handles a request
- A browser requests a hostname, such as
photos.example.com. - DNS directs that hostname to the public-facing proxy, or to a tunnel provider if the setup uses a tunnel.
- The proxy matches the request to a configured upstream service, such as an app listening on a private address and port.
- The app sends its response back through the proxy to the browser.
A hostname-to-service mapping is one way to publish an app; Cloudflare’s documentation, for example, describes mapping a public hostname to a local service such as http://localhost:8080. This pattern does not require Cloudflare or even a public domain in every deployment. Cloudflare Tunnel routing documentation
Why self-hosters use a reverse proxy
One entry point for multiple apps
When several web apps listen on different local ports, a proxy can route requests by hostname through a shared entry point. Instead of asking someone to remember a separate port for each service, you can use distinct hostnames such as photos.example.com and media.example.com. The specific routing rules depend on the proxy and network setup.

Centralized HTTPS handling
A proxy can handle HTTPS at the edge and forward requests to backend apps. Caddy’s quick-start guide demonstrates a reverse proxy with HTTPS. Caddy reverse proxy quick start HTTPS protects a connection only when configured and verified correctly; it does not replace app authentication, updates, access rules, or network isolation.

A consistent place to manage routing
Putting hostname routing in one proxy configuration can make it easier to see which public name points to which service. It centralizes routing decisions, not every security or maintenance responsibility: each application still needs appropriate configuration and protection.
Reverse proxy vs. forward proxy
The distinction is whose requests the proxy handles. A reverse proxy receives requests on behalf of servers and forwards them to backend services. A forward proxy serves clients making requests to external resources and can regulate their access. The two can both sit between two endpoints, but they serve different sides of the connection. Reverse proxy vs. tunnel
A self-managed reverse proxy and a managed tunnel can both make self-hosted apps reachable by hostname, but they use different traffic paths and operational models. A conventional public-facing proxy requires the operator to arrange suitable public ingress; the exact network requirements depend on the deployment. Cloudflare Tunnel instead uses cloudflared to maintain an outbound connection, and its documented model does not require a public origin IP or inbound ports. Neither approach is universally safer or easier. The right fit depends on your network, how much configuration you want to manage, which services should be reachable, and whether you are comfortable routing traffic through a provider. DNS and provider requirements also vary. Check the current terms for the specific service and plan: Cloudflare’s routing documentation says Free, Pro, and Business users must use a specified paid service to serve video and other large files through public-hostname routes. That restriction is specific to the stated plans and use; it should not be generalized to every workload or provider. Cloudflare Tunnel routing documentation

Security details that matter
Keep forwarded client information trustworthy
Proxies may pass client details in forwarded headers. If another proxy or CDN sits in front of your proxy, configure trusted proxy addresses so the proxy trusts those headers only from known sources. Caddy documents trusted proxy configuration and warns that a client may spoof X-Forwarded-For when Cloudflare is placed in front of Caddy without suitable handling. Caddy trusted proxy documentation
Verify HTTPS connections to upstream apps
HTTPS between a client and the edge proxy is a separate connection from HTTPS between the proxy and an upstream app. If the upstream uses HTTPS, configure certificate trust for that connection. Caddy explicitly warns that disabling upstream TLS verification disables HTTPS security checks and is not recommended. Caddy HTTPS upstream documentation

Expose only the services you intend to publish
A reverse proxy does not automatically add application authentication, patching, access policy, safe defaults, or isolation. Decide which apps should be public, and use a VPN or an access-control layer for private services when appropriate. WebSocket support and upstream Host handling are also implementation details to check; Caddy documents WebSocket upgrades and its proxy behavior in its reverse proxy reference.
When does a reverse proxy make sense?
- You want multiple web apps reachable through hostname-based routing rather than separate port numbers.
- You want a central place to configure routing and potentially handle HTTPS.
- You can manage the network exposure and security settings involved in the chosen architecture.
If avoiding inbound connections to your origin is a priority, a tunnel may fit the traffic path better, while adding a provider dependency. If you prefer to control the proxy and ingress directly, a self-managed reverse proxy may suit that approach. In either case, treat the proxy as one layer in the setup—not as a substitute for securing each app.
