For AUD/USD, one standard pip is a price change of 0.0001. Because AUD is the base currency and USD is the quote currency, a position of N Australian-dollar units is worth N × 0.0001 US dollars for each pip. To express that amount in an Australian-dollar account, divide the US-dollar pip value by the applicable AUD/USD rate.

For example, 100,000 AUD units produce USD 10 per pip. At an illustrative AUD/USD rate of 0.6500, that equals about AUD 15.38 per pip before spread, commission, financing and other adjustments. The rate is only an arithmetic example, not a current market quote.

What a pip means in AUD/USD

A pip is a standardized unit for describing a currency-pair price movement. OANDA Australia’s educational material, published April 4, 2023, describes a pip as “the smallest standardised move by which currency pair quote can change based on market conventions.” In AUD/USD, the conventional pip increment is 0.0001, or one ten-thousandth of a US dollar per Australian dollar.

A quote of 0.6500 means one Australian dollar is priced at 0.6500 US dollars. If the quote rises to 0.6501, AUD/USD has moved up one pip. If it falls to 0.6499, it has moved down one pip. A pip measures price distance; it does not by itself tell you how much money a trade gains or loses. Money depends on the number of Australian-dollar units in the position and on the account currency.

Why the quote currency matters

In AUD/USD, AUD is the base currency and USD is the quote currency. The pair’s quoted price and the initial pip calculation are therefore expressed in USD. This is why multiplying the AUD unit size by 0.0001 gives a US-dollar amount.

The basic AUD/USD pip-value formula

Let N be the number of AUD units in the position. The one-pip value in USD is:

Pip value (USD) = N × 0.0001

This formula applies to the standard AUD/USD pip convention and to the stated unit quantity. It is not a universal “per lot” rule, because trading venues can define a lot differently.

Common position sizes

The table shows the arithmetic for several unit amounts. These are unit-based examples, not promises about a broker’s contract size.

AUD units Calculation Value of one pip (USD)
1,000 1,000 × 0.0001 USD 0.10
10,000 10,000 × 0.0001 USD 1
100,000 100,000 × 0.0001 USD 10

Thus, a 100,000-AUD position has a USD 10 gross change for every pip, before trading costs and any conversion into the account’s home currency.

Converting the pip value to AUD

An AUD-denominated account needs the USD amount converted back into Australian dollars. Because AUD/USD is quoted as USD per AUD, divide by the pair’s applicable rate:

Pip value (AUD) = (N × 0.0001) ÷ AUD/USD exchange rate

Use the conversion rate that applies to your account and transaction. A broker may use a bid, ask, mid or account-reporting rate, and the timing of that rate can differ from the chart price.

Worked 100,000-unit example

  1. Start with 100,000 AUD units.
  2. Calculate the USD amount: 100,000 × 0.0001 = USD 10.
  3. Use the illustrative rate 0.6500 USD per AUD.
  4. Convert: USD 10 ÷ 0.6500 = AUD 15.3846, or about AUD 15.38 per pip.

The 0.6500 rate is selected solely to demonstrate the calculation. It is not a current quote. If AUD/USD rises, each US dollar converts into fewer Australian dollars, so the AUD equivalent of a fixed USD pip amount falls. If AUD/USD falls, the AUD equivalent rises.

How to count pips in an AUD/USD move

Subtract the starting quote from the ending quote, take the absolute price change, and divide by 0.0001:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pips moved = |Ending price − Starting price| ÷ 0.0001

A move from 0.6500 to 0.6510 is 0.0010. Dividing 0.0010 by 0.0001 gives 10 pips. For 100,000 AUD units, the gross price effect over that full move is USD 100, calculated as 10 pips multiplied by USD 10 per pip. This figure excludes spread, commission, financing and any conversion difference.

Direction changes the sign

  • For a long AUD/USD position, a rise in the pair is favorable before costs and a fall is unfavorable.
  • For a short position, a fall is favorable and a rise is unfavorable.
  • A pip count stated without trade direction describes distance only, not profit or loss.

Pips, pipettes and displayed decimals

Some platforms show AUD/USD to five decimal places, such as 0.65005. The fifth decimal is commonly called a pipette, or one-tenth of a pip. In that display, a change from 0.65000 to 0.65001 is one pipette, while a change to 0.65010 is one pip.

Do not treat the last displayed digit as automatically being a full pip. Check the venue’s symbol specification, because the number of decimals and minimum price increment can vary. OANDA’s glossary and educational material define a pip as the usual fourth-decimal movement and a pipette as one-tenth of that movement.

What “one lot” means

“One lot” is not a universal unit across brokers, CFD providers and other trading venues. One platform may label 100,000 AUD units as a standard lot, while another may expose the quantity directly or use a different contract size. The pip formula requires the actual AUD units, not the label alone.

Verify the contract before calculating

  • Open the instrument or contract specification for AUD/USD.
  • Find the contract size or units represented by one lot.
  • Check the minimum trade size and allowed increments.
  • Confirm whether the displayed pip value is per lot, per contract or for the entire position.
  • Check the account-currency conversion rule and the rate source used for statements.

If the specification says one lot represents 100,000 AUD, substitute 100,000 for N. If it says 10,000 AUD, the one-pip USD amount is one-tenth of the 100,000-unit example. Never infer the unit size from the word “lot” without reading the contract details.

A practical way to calculate it in a trading platform

  1. Record the position quantity. Write down the actual AUD units, including the total if several tickets are combined.
  2. Identify the pair precision. Confirm that the venue uses 0.0001 as the standard pip and note whether it displays pipettes.
  3. Calculate the quote-currency amount. Multiply the units by 0.0001 to obtain USD per pip.
  4. Convert to the account currency. For an AUD account, divide by the applicable AUD/USD conversion rate.
  5. Scale for the expected move. Multiply the one-pip amount by the number of pips in the planned stop, target or observed move.
  6. Subtract costs for a net estimate. Include spread, commission, financing and any broker-specific adjustments separately.
  7. Compare with the platform display. If the figures differ, inspect contract size, rounding, conversion timing and whether the platform is showing a pipette-based amount.

Why a pip value is not the same as net profit

The formula describes the gross price effect of a one-pip move for a specified quantity. Realized results can be different because the trade opens and closes across the spread, and the broker may charge commission or financing. A broker can also convert the quote-currency result using a rate that is not the chart’s mid-price.

For example, a long position may be quoted at a favorable mid-price move but still show a loss immediately after entry because the spread must be overcome. Overnight financing can add or subtract from the result when a position is held. These costs should be modeled separately rather than hidden inside the pip formula.

Account-statement conversion

Account reporting often converts quote-currency amounts into the home currency using a broker-defined rate. An account-statement explanation from OANDA describes such a quote-to-home-currency conversion and gives an example for a USD account; it does not establish one conversion method for every broker or account type. For an actual AUD figure, use the rate and policy in your venue’s current contract and statement documentation.

Common calculation mistakes

Using the wrong decimal increment

Dividing by 0.0010 instead of 0.0001 understates the pip count by a factor of ten for AUD/USD. Read the instrument’s pip definition before counting a move.

Confusing a pipette with a pip

On a five-decimal quote, the final digit is generally one-tenth of a pip. A ten-pipette move equals one pip, not ten pips.

Assuming every lot is 100,000 units

The unit quantity is venue-specific. Replace the lot label with the contract’s stated AUD units before applying the formula.

Converting in the wrong direction

Because AUD/USD is USD per AUD, convert a USD pip amount to AUD by dividing by AUD/USD. Multiplying by the pair rate would produce the wrong currency relationship.

Calling a gross amount “profit”

A pip value excludes direction, spread, commission, financing and execution effects. State whether a figure is a gross price effect or a net trading result.

Quick reference

  • Standard AUD/USD pip: 0.0001.
  • USD pip value: AUD units × 0.0001.
  • AUD pip value: USD pip value ÷ applicable AUD/USD rate.
  • 100,000 AUD units: USD 10 per pip before costs and conversion.
  • Pipette: one-tenth of a pip when the venue displays fractional-pip precision.
  • For a reliable result: verify units, precision, conversion rate and all trading charges in the broker’s specification.
