A nit is a unit of screen luminance. One nit equals one candela per square meter (1 cd/m²). In practical terms, it describes how much light a display emits toward the viewer.

The right nit rating depends on what you are doing. A bright office display, an HDR laptop, and a monitor used in a dark room have different requirements. A higher number can help, but it does not automatically mean better HDR or a better-looking screen.

What does “nits” mean on a display?

When a monitor is advertised as having 400 nits, the manufacturer is describing its luminance: how bright the screen can appear under specified test conditions. The technical unit is candela per square meter, abbreviated as cd/m²; “nit” is the more convenient consumer term.

Nits measure brightness only. They do not measure:

  • Resolution or sharpness
  • Contrast ratio or black levels
  • Color accuracy or color gamut
  • Refresh rate
  • HDR quality as a whole

Those specifications affect image quality in different ways. A 4K monitor with accurate colors and strong contrast may look better than a brighter but poorly calibrated display.

How many nits do you need?

Use the following figures as buying guidelines rather than absolute rules:

Use case Practical brightness target What to know
Dark-room reading, coding, or general use 200–300 nits More brightness may be uncomfortable in a dim room.
Typical office or home use 300–400 nits Usually enough for indoor lighting.
Bright room or near a window 400–600 nits Extra brightness helps overcome reflections and ambient light.
HDR video on a built-in Windows laptop, tablet, or 2-in-1 300 nits or more Microsoft recommends at least 300 nits maximum brightness, along with a compatible display and HDR support.
External HDR monitor DisplayHDR 500 or higher Certification is more useful than an isolated peak-nit claim.
Strong HDR highlights 1,000 nits or more peak Check whether the number is peak, sustained, or full-screen brightness.

Microsoft’s recommendation of 300 nits or more applies specifically to HDR video on a built-in Windows display. It is not a universal minimum for every HDR application.

Is 300 nits bright enough?

For ordinary indoor use, 300 nits is generally adequate. It is also Microsoft’s recommended maximum-brightness level for HDR video on a built-in Windows laptop, tablet, or 2-in-1 display.

However, 300 nits does not guarantee an impressive HDR experience. The display also needs suitable HDR processing, contrast, color range, and a compatible signal path. A 300-nit laptop in a dark room may produce a perfectly usable image, while the same screen can look washed out beside a sunny window.

For an external HDR monitor, Microsoft recommends looking for VESA DisplayHDR 500 or higher, preferably using the current DisplayHDR 1.2 certification. Certification helps because HDR performance varies significantly between displays that advertise similar brightness numbers.

What is the difference between peak and sustained brightness?

This distinction is one of the most important parts of reading a monitor specification.

  • Peak brightness: the highest luminance the display can produce, often for a small highlight or a short period.
  • Sustained brightness: the level the display can maintain for longer periods.
  • Full-screen brightness: the luminance when a large or entire portion of the panel is bright.
  • SDR brightness: the brightness rating for standard dynamic range content.
  • HDR brightness: the brightness available when HDR content and an HDR mode are active.

A display rated at 1,000 peak nits may not show the entire screen at 1,000 nits. For example, Apple lists the Studio Display XDR as offering up to 1,000 nits SDR and 2,000 nits peak HDR. Those are different operating conditions, not two interchangeable descriptions of its everyday brightness.

When comparing screens, look for the test condition and duration behind the number. “1,000 nits” without the words peak, sustained, HDR, SDR, or full-screen is incomplete information.

Does HDR require a high nit rating?

HDR is not simply a brighter version of SDR. VESA notes that HDR can preserve a similar average brightness while expanding the luminance range, color range, and contrast. A display’s peak brightness is therefore only one part of HDR performance.

For a Windows external display, Microsoft lists HDR10 support and a compatible connection such as:

  • DisplayPort 1.4
  • HDMI 2.0 or later
  • USB-C
  • Thunderbolt

The computer, graphics hardware, cable, adapter, and display all need to support the required signal. A high-nit screen connected through an unsuitable adapter may not expose HDR at all.

For HDR, assess the complete specification:

  1. HDR format support, such as HDR10.
  2. VESA DisplayHDR certification where available.
  3. Peak, sustained, and full-screen brightness.
  4. Contrast and black-level performance.
  5. Color gamut and color accuracy.
  6. The connection standard and cable requirements.

Why 50% brightness is not 50% of the nits

The brightness slider is a control level, not a direct luminance meter. On Windows, brightness mappings are not necessarily linear. A setting of 50% does not mean the display is producing half its maximum nits.

Windows can allocate more control levels to lower luminance because human vision is more sensitive to brightness changes in darker ranges. The exact mapping also depends on the display and its driver.

Consequently, a screen advertised at 400 nits might not produce 200 nits at the 50% slider position. The only reliable way to know the actual luminance is to measure it with suitable hardware or use a device-specific reporting tool.

How to check HDR capability in Windows 11

To find the HDR controls:

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
  2. Select the HDR-capable display at the top of the page.
  3. Open HDR.

From this page, you can adjust SDR content brightness or HDR content brightness. Use these controls when SDR applications look too dim or too bright while HDR is enabled; changing the monitor’s ordinary brightness control may not correct the signal mismatch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To verify the underlying capability with Windows’ diagnostic tool:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type dxdiag and select OK.
  3. Select Yes if Windows asks to check whether drivers are digitally signed.
  4. On the System tab, inspect Advanced Color and Monitor Capabilities.

Useful entries include AdvancedColorSupported, AdvancedColorEnabled, HDR Supported, BT2020RGB, BT2020YCC, and Eotf2084Supported. If the tool reports HDR Not Supported, at least one requirement is missing. Use Save All Information to create a diagnostic text file you can share with a support technician.

Windows 11 uses the same general HDR documentation as Windows 10, although Windows 10 reached the end of normal support on October 14, 2025. To check the installed Windows version, run winver.

Windows HDR problems related to brightness

HDR is missing or disabled

Check the display, graphics driver, GPU, cable, adapter, and connection standard. For an external display, confirm that HDR10 is supported and that the monitor’s own HDR setting is enabled. Some monitors expose HDR only after selecting a particular picture mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDR looks too bright or too dark

Return to Settings > System > Display > HDR and adjust SDR content brightness or HDR content brightness. SDR and HDR signals can be interpreted differently by different display models.

HDR switches off when the laptop is unplugged

Expand the HDR or HDR video streaming section and clear Turn off HDR when my PC is running on battery or Turn off HDR video streaming when my PC is running on battery. Keeping HDR enabled can increase power use, so Windows may disable it by default on some systems.

Dolby Vision is dimmer than expected

On a Dolby Vision-certified monitor, Windows may automatically select Dolby Vision when available. If that mode limits brightness, open the display’s HDR settings, expand the HDR section, and clear Use Dolby Vision mode. Windows then uses a non-certified HDR10 mode, which may be brighter on some displays.

The brightness slider makes the display unusable

Some display mappings can associate 0% with 0 nits, hiding the controls needed to recover. For displays using Windows’ nit-based brightness interface, Windows restricts 0% to a minimum of 5 nits.

How to check HDR on a Mac

Apple’s current requirement for HDR video on a Mac is the latest macOS version, a compatible Mac, and an HDR10-compatible display, TV, or projector.

If HDR does not work:

  1. Enable HDR on the display itself, or select its option to prefer HDR when available.
  2. Check whether HDR works only on a specific TV input, such as HDMI 2 or HDMI 3.
  3. Install the display manufacturer’s latest firmware.
  4. Use an HDMI cable and adapter that support HDR10.
  5. If the signal passes through an AV receiver, soundbar, or other intermediary, confirm that it supports HDR10 and has current firmware.
  6. Test the Mac by connecting it directly to the display.

Apple also notes that HDR brightness and color vary by Mac model and viewing environment. A dimmer room can make HDR highlights and contrast appear more pronounced.

What to look for when buying a screen

For a basic monitor, prioritize a well-reviewed panel with around 300–400 nits, good anti-reflective treatment, and suitable contrast for your room. If the screen will face a bright window, 400–600 nits gives you more headroom.

For HDR, do not buy based on the largest number in the product title. Look for a certification and determine whether the listed value is peak or sustained. A display rated DisplayHDR 500 or higher is a more meaningful starting point than an uncertified “500-nit HDR” claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also remember that excessive brightness can be unpleasant in a dark room. A screen that can reach 1,000 nits is not meant to be operated at its maximum all the time; it gives HDR content room for bright highlights and gives you flexibility in a brightly lit environment.

FAQ

Is one nit equal to one lumen?

No. One nit equals one candela per square meter (cd/m²), which describes luminance from a surface. A lumen measures total luminous flux, so the two units describe different things.

Is 500 nits good for a monitor?

500 nits is strong for ordinary indoor use and meets the numeric level associated with VESA DisplayHDR 500, but the monitor should actually carry the certification. The number alone does not establish contrast, black levels, color, or sustained HDR performance.

How many nits are good for a laptop?

Around 300 nits is generally suitable for indoor laptop use, and Microsoft recommends 300 nits or more maximum brightness for HDR video on a built-in Windows display. Choose a brighter model if you regularly work near windows or outdoors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do more nits make a screen better?

Not automatically. More brightness helps with reflections and HDR highlights, but HDR quality also depends on contrast, black levels, color, tone mapping, and whether the brightness is peak or sustained.

Can Windows show the actual nits of my screen?

Sometimes. Driver and display support can expose nit-based brightness information, but Windows’ slider is not a direct percentage of maximum luminance. Device-specific tools, such as the VESA DisplayHDR Test app on supported systems, can provide more relevant reporting.

The Bottom Line

One nit equals 1 cd/m². For normal indoor work, 300–400 nits is usually enough; 400–600 nits is more useful in bright rooms. Microsoft recommends at least 300 nits maximum brightness for HDR video on built-in Windows displays and recommends VESA DisplayHDR 500 or higher for external HDR displays. Treat 1,000-nit claims carefully: confirm whether they describe peak HDR, sustained output, or full-screen brightness. Nits matter, but they are only one part of screen quality.
