A mobile broadband router gets its internet connection from a cellular mobile network and shares it with other devices, usually over Wi-Fi. It needs both usable cellular coverage and a compatible mobile data plan; unlike a fixed-broadband router, it does not depend on a home broadband line.
How a mobile broadband router works
A mobile broadband router uses its built-in mobile radio to connect to an operator’s network. It then provides a local connection—commonly Wi-Fi—so phones, computers, and other devices can use that internet connection. Ofcom describes wireless access systems as links between users’ devices and telecommunications networks; Vodafone’s glossary explains that a mobile broadband router can serve several devices at once.
The router is only one part of the connection. The mobile network must be available where the router is used, the device must be compatible with that network, and a suitable mobile data plan must supply service. Data used by connected devices is handled under that plan’s terms. The plan may be bundled, prepaid, or structured another way depending on the provider and market.

How it differs from similar devices
| Device or service | What it does | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile broadband router | Connects to a mobile network and shares internet with connected devices. | Vodafone’s UK glossary describes this category as mains-operated and able to connect several devices. |
| Mobile hotspot or MiFi | Connects to a mobile network and creates a Wi-Fi hotspot. | Often compact and battery-operated, so it is designed to be portable. |
| USB data dongle | Provides mobile-network access through a computer’s USB port. | It connects directly to a computer rather than acting as a shared router. |
| Data-only SIM | Supplies mobile data service for a compatible device. | It is a SIM and service option, not router hardware. |
| Fixed-broadband or Wi-Fi-only router | Creates a local network using an internet connection supplied another way. | It does not inherently use a cellular connection; a cellular router has a mobile-network radio. |
These terms describe common device types, not a guarantee that every model has the same ports, antenna options, SIM format, battery, or Wi-Fi features. Check the specifications for the particular device.

What 4G and 5G mean for these routers
Mobile broadband routers can support different generations of cellular technology, including 4G and 5G. A newer network generation may offer characteristics such as higher capacity, speed, or lower latency in suitable conditions, but those general network characteristics do not promise a particular router’s speed or availability at a specific address. Actual service depends on the operator, location, device compatibility, signal conditions, and plan.
Before relying on a router for a particular location, check the mobile operator’s current coverage information and confirm that the router supports the operator’s network. Ofcom’s UK guidance discusses mobile and wireless broadband, while the FCC’s mobile broadband definitions apply to U.S. reporting; neither source makes coverage or performance universal across countries.

What to check when choosing a type
- Internet source: confirm whether you need a cellular connection or a fixed-line broadband connection.
- Power and portability: a mains-operated router suits a location with power; a battery-powered hotspot is designed for carrying around.
- Sharing needs: consider whether several devices need to use the connection at once or whether one computer needs direct USB access.
- Network compatibility and coverage: check the device against the operator and the place where you plan to use it.
- Plan terms: review the data allowance, charging, and other conditions separately from the router’s hardware cost.
What the FCC’s 200 kbps figure does—and does not—mean
The FCC’s 2022 Broadband Data Collection guidance defines mobile wireless broadband service for its reporting context using a threshold of more than 200 kbps in at least one direction. That regulatory definition is not an advertised consumer speed, a router performance benchmark, or a minimum speed guarantee.
