A mini-phone to USB-C adapter is usually a small audio adapter with a USB-C plug on one end and a 3.5 mm headphone socket on the other. It lets you connect wired headphones, speakers or a headset with a standard 3.5 mm plug to a USB-C device, provided that device and adapter support USB-C audio.
What does “mini-phone” mean?
“Mini-phone” refers to the analog audio connector commonly called a 3.5 mm jack or a 1/8-inch connector. It is the familiar round plug used by many wired headphones and other audio equipment. See the Computer Language Company definition of mini-phone connector.
Which connectors does the adapter have?
The usual adapter for connecting wired headphones to a USB-C device has a USB-C male plug and a 3.5 mm female socket. The USB-C plug goes into the device; the headphone or headset’s 3.5 mm male plug goes into the socket. Dell’s listing for its Bull Creek adapter specifies USB Type-C male and mini-phone stereo audio female connectors: Dell Bull Creek Tech USB-C to Audio Adapter.

Will it work with headphones and a headset microphone?
A standard stereo headphone plug typically has three conductors, called TRS, for left audio, right audio and ground. A headset plug may have four conductors, called TRRS, adding a contact for the microphone. If you need the microphone for calls or recording, check that the adapter explicitly supports headset microphone input and that your device supports it too. A 3.5 mm socket alone does not establish microphone support.
Does every USB-C adapter support audio?
No universal compatibility follows from the USB-C connector shape alone. USB-C devices and adapters can differ in audio support and implementation. Check the specifications for both the specific phone, tablet or computer and the adapter; confirm audio output, and microphone input if needed. Some adapters include audio-conversion electronics: for example, a DELTACO/Dustin product data sheet describes an active USB-C-to-3.5 mm stereo adapter. What should you look for when choosing one?
- Connector arrangement: USB-C male to 3.5 mm female is the usual configuration for wired headphones on a USB-C device.
- Audio needs: Check for stereo playback, and separately verify TRRS headset microphone support if you plan to use a headset mic.
- Device compatibility: Confirm that the device’s USB-C port supports audio output and any other function you require.
- Adapter specifications: Look for the maker’s stated implementation and supported functions rather than assuming all adapters behave alike.
When shopping, the more common wording is “USB-C to 3.5 mm headphone jack adapter” or “USB-C to 3.5 mm audio adapter.”
