A keyboard is an input device that turns key presses into text, commands, navigation, or control signals. Typing is its most familiar job, but keyboards also help people move through software, play games, control music systems, and enter information using designs adapted to particular languages or tasks. These five categories are a practical way to understand keyboard uses, not a formal or exhaustive taxonomy.

1. Typing text and entering data

Keyboards let people enter letters, numbers, punctuation, and other symbols into computers. Their familiar arrangement has roots in typewriters and teletypes: early computer designers adapted those existing devices rather than inventing an entirely new way to enter text. The Computer History Museum’s keyboard history exhibit describes that transition and the development of familiar layouts.

QWERTY is one enduring example. The museum notes that the layout was patented in 1878 and remains widespread among users of Roman alphabets. It also cautions against a common misconception: “Contrary to urban legend, QWERTY was designed to speed, not slow, typing.” That historical summary does not establish that QWERTY is the fastest or best layout for every person.

Keyboard text entry is not limited to writing prose. It is also used for entering figures, labels, search terms, and other data in applications.

2. Giving commands and navigating software

Letters and numbers are only part of a keyboard. Function keys, arrow keys, and other dedicated controls can invoke software actions, move a cursor, or navigate choices. What a key does depends on the application and its current context.

Historical examples show how these controls can make a computer interface usable even when it is text-based. Community Memory instructions described by the Computer History Museum used YES, NO, and HELP keys to respond to prompts, as well as arrow keys to browse and move a cursor. The museum’s archive materials, including “The Keyboard” and “How to Use the Keyboard”, illustrate keyboard sections and interaction methods.

3. Playing games and interacting with entertainment

A keyboard can serve as a game input device, letting a player control movement, actions, menus, or other in-game functions. It is one way to interact with a game, not a universally superior choice: whether it fits depends on the game and the player’s preference.

The Computer History Museum’s PDP-1 restoration account places games among the machine’s early interactive programs and identifies Spacewar! as an early computer video game. This historical example helps show how keyboards became part of interactive computing; it does not establish that all games are designed for keyboard play.

4. Controlling music and creative systems

“Keyboard” can also mean a piano-style musical keyboard, which is distinct from a standard computer keyboard. Piano-style keys can be used to enter notes or control a music system.

The Computer History Museum’s account of the GROOVE system describes an operator working with knobs, switches, an electric typewriter, and a joystick. A piano keyboard was later added to help control generated music in real time. This is a specific example of keyboard-based creative control, not evidence that an ordinary computer keyboard is itself a musical instrument. See the museum’s history of computers and music.

5. Supporting particular languages, tasks, and physical needs

Keyboard designs can vary in their layouts, shapes, and key arrangements. Those differences may address the characters a person needs to enter, the task at hand, or the way a keyboard is shaped for use.

  • Language input: The Computer History Museum describes keyboard approaches for Chinese input and support for Arabic and Roman characters. A keyboard’s layout and input method can therefore matter as much as its physical keys.
  • Ergonomic forms: The museum documents designs such as SafeType and Maltron. Its collection entry for a 1978 Maltron keyboard says Lillian Malt’s arrangement accounted for hand anatomy and the frequency of letters and successive keystrokes. These are design intentions; the cited material does not establish clinical benefits or comparative performance.
  • Configurable keys: Some designs allow keys to be configured for particular uses. This can make the arrangement more suited to a task, but the appropriate setup depends on the user and software.

These examples show why “keyboard” describes a family of input devices, rather than one fixed shape or layout.

How to choose a keyboard for your use

Start with what you need to do, then check whether the keyboard’s design fits that task. A general-purpose layout may suit everyday text entry and software commands; language-specific input, a different physical form, or task-specific key arrangements may be relevant for other needs.

  • Task: Consider whether you mainly type, navigate software, play games, or control a creative application.
  • Layout and language: Check that the key arrangement and input method support the characters and conventions you use.
  • Size and key grouping: Consider which keys you need and whether their arrangement suits your workspace and habits.
  • Shape and adjustability: If physical form matters to you, examine the design and adjustability directly. The historical descriptions cited here do not establish health outcomes.
  • Compatibility and connection: Verify that the keyboard works with your device and uses a connection method it supports.

There is no evidence here for ranking current models or comparing their prices, durability, latency, or switch types. Those details need to be checked for specific products and devices.

Why keyboards became a standard way to interact with computers

In 1956, when computer instructions were commonly supplied through punched cards, paper tape, dials, and switches, MIT researchers explored direct keyboard input. The Computer History Museum’s 1956 computer history timeline says a Flexowriter connected to an MIT computer was proposed as an inexpensive, flexible input device. A later Whirlwind experiment confirmed its convenience, according to the museum’s account of MIT’s Whirlwind keyboard-input experiment.

That history helps explain the keyboard’s lasting role: the same basic device can enter text while also communicating commands and controls. Its uses have broadened, while its layout and physical form continue to vary with language, task, and design.
