A K-shaped economy is a metaphor for an economy in which different groups experience sharply diverging outcomes: one group’s income, wealth, employment or spending rises while another group’s outcome stagnates or falls. The two paths resemble the arms of the letter K.

It is not an official economic classification with a universal threshold. Whether an economy is “K-shaped” depends on which groups, outcome, time period, price adjustment and data source an analyst chooses. Current U.S. evidence through 2026 is mixed: some measures show a widening gap, while others show gains across groups or rely on different definitions.

What is a K-shaped economy?

The term became common after the COVID-19 pandemic as analysts described unequal recoveries. The Minneapolis Fed says it was used to characterize diverging paths for high-income Americans and everyone else, while the Richmond Fed emphasizes that no single definition is accepted. In the Richmond Fed’s stricter formulation, the economy is K-shaped only when outcomes for high-income households improve while outcomes for low-income households worsen.

That strict test matters. If every income group gains, but the top gains much more quickly, the result is unequal growth but not necessarily a K-shaped economy under that definition. Analysts may still use the phrase more broadly for any pronounced divergence.

As Kyle DeMaria, John Bailey Jones, Joseph Mengedoth and Urvi Neelakantan of the Richmond Fed put it: “There is no single accepted definition of a K-shaped economy, and recent analyses differ both in how they group households and in the outcomes they examine.”

The metaphor can describe several different outcomes:

  • Jobs: employment, unemployment, labor-force participation, job finding or perceived job security.
  • Wages and income: individual pay, household after-tax income, transfers and investment income.
  • Spending: purchases of goods and services, retail sales or card transactions.
  • Inflation: the prices different households face for their own consumption baskets.
  • Wealth: home equity, stocks, retirement accounts and other assets.

These measures are related but not interchangeable. A household may have modest wage growth yet spend more because its assets rose, or report higher nominal spending while its inflation-adjusted purchasing power fell.

Why the distinction matters

Calling the economy K-shaped implies more than “some people are doing better than others.” It suggests that the groups are moving in opposite directions or that the gap is widening enough to change economic behavior. Before accepting the label, ask four questions:

  1. Who is rising and who is falling? Are groups divided by income quintile, education, age, race, geography or another characteristic?
  2. Which outcome is diverging? A spending gap is not proof of a wage gap, and a wage gap is not proof of falling employment.
  3. Over what period? A pattern during the pandemic recovery may differ from one measured over three decades or from the latest quarter.
  4. Are the figures nominal or real? Spending that rises in dollars may not represent greater purchasing power after inflation.

Without those details, “the economy is K-shaped” can turn a qualified statistical finding into an overly broad political slogan.

How to recognize possible divergence in jobs

Measure more than the unemployment rate

A job-based K pattern can appear in employment, unemployment, labor-force participation, job-finding rates, hours, layoffs or the security of available work. An overall unemployment rate can hide differences by income, education, age or industry. Compare the same indicator for clearly defined groups and use the same date range.

Household income and a person’s job are different units of analysis. One household member may lose work while another gains hours; a household may also receive transfers or investment income. Therefore, a household-income comparison should not be presented as a direct measure of individual job performance.

Separate measured outcomes from perceptions

The Federal Reserve’s 2025 household well-being survey found that 42% of adults considered finding or keeping a job a minor or major concern, up from 37% in 2024. Concern was especially unequal by income: 30% of adults with income below $50,000 said job security was a major concern, compared with 11% of adults with income of at least $50,000. These are perceptions of job security, not unemployment rates or an estimate of jobs lost. See the Federal Reserve’s 2025 Economic Well-Being report for the survey context.

A credible jobs analysis therefore reports both the objective labor-market measure and, when relevant, how secure people feel. A rise in concern can precede changes in employment, reflect highly publicized layoffs, or capture anxiety among people who remain employed.

How to recognize divergence in wages and household income

Do not treat wages and income as the same statistic

Wage series usually describe individual workers or jobs. Household-income statistics combine earnings from multiple people and may include government transfers, interest, dividends, business income and realized investment gains. The choice affects the apparent shape of the economy.

Use inflation-adjusted, or real, figures when the question is whether living standards or purchasing power improved. Nominal income can rise simply because prices rose. State the price index, base year and population whenever possible.

Long-run Richmond Fed evidence

The Richmond Fed’s analysis of real after-tax household income from 1994 through 2024 found approximate gains of 13% for low-income households, 26% for middle-income households and 63% for high-income households. Income increased for all three groups over the full period, so the result does not meet the Richmond Fed’s strict definition of a K-shaped economy. It does show substantially faster growth at the top. The complete methodology and group definitions are in “Is the US Economy K-Shaped? Evidence From the Past Three Decades”.

Those figures also illustrate why the choice of baseline matters. A 13% real gain can coexist with a much larger 63% gain at the top, creating a widening relative gap even though no group experienced an average decline.

Wage growth is not a complete explanation for spending

New York Fed authors examining the divide in consumption report that differences in wage growth alone cannot fully explain the retail-spending pattern they analyze. Households can draw on savings, home equity, stock-market gains, credit or transfers. A conclusion that “high earners spent more because their wages rose” therefore requires evidence connecting the wage change to the spending change, not merely that both occurred.

How to recognize divergence in spending

Identify what the spending data actually count

Spending is the most visible K-shaped indicator, but it is also where measurement differences are easiest to miss. Before comparing groups, identify:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the income cutoffs or groups;
  • the population covered;
  • the categories included, such as retail goods only or total consumption including services;
  • whether the figures are nominal or adjusted for inflation;
  • the time period; and
  • whether the source is a government survey, a self-reported answer, a bank or card panel, or a modeled estimate.

Card data can omit cash, checks, rent and purchases made through another provider. A retail series can omit services, travel, automobiles or housing. Modeled personal outlays are inferred from financial and wealth data rather than observed transaction by transaction. These sources should not be treated as interchangeable.

Atlanta Fed payments-survey finding

A 2026 Atlanta Fed payments-survey study found spending rose from 2021 to 2025 in both the lower-income group (the first three income quintiles) and the higher-income group (the fourth and fifth quintiles). Growth was substantially faster for the higher-income group. The authors wrote: “Both groups saw spending increases, but the gap in growth rates points to a widening of consumption inequality across the income distribution.” Their results and survey design are described in the Atlanta Fed payments-survey paper.

This finding supports a divergence in the pace of spending growth, not necessarily a decline in spending by lower-income households. It also covers the survey’s specified groups and period; it should not automatically be generalized to every household or to total consumption.

Survey responses can tell a different story

The Federal Reserve’s 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances asked families whether their spending had changed. The share reporting increased spending was about the same across income and wealth groups, while reports of spending decreases were more concentrated among lower-income families. A self-reported change over the previous year is different from a transaction total, so the two results can coexist: families may report similar increases while the dollar amount spent grows faster among affluent households.

Measure and period Finding What it does and does not establish
Real after-tax household income, 1994–2024 About 13% growth for low-income households, 26% for middle-income households and 63% for high-income households. Shows faster long-run gains at the top, but all groups gained; it fails the Richmond Fed’s strict “top up, bottom down” definition.
Job-security concern, 2025 versus 2024 42% of adults reported a minor or major concern in 2025, up from 37% in 2024. A major concern was reported by 30% below $50,000 income versus 11% at $50,000 or more. Shows unequal perceptions of job security, not unemployment or job losses.
Spending, 2021–2025 Atlanta Fed payments survey Both lower-income and higher-income groups increased spending; the higher-income group grew substantially faster. Supports widening consumption inequality in that survey, but coverage depends on its payment data and group definitions.
Reported spending changes in the 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances Increased-spending reports were about equally common across income and wealth groups; spending decreases were more concentrated among lower-income families. Self-reported direction of change is not a direct comparison of dollar spending.
Consumption, 2021–2023 and later periods The Richmond Fed found consumption was K-shaped in 2021–23. Its alternative spending series showed more uniform growth across income groups from 2024 until a decline in its latest period. Shows that the conclusion can change with the series and time window.
Modeled personal outlays, 2020 Q3–2025 Q3 A Moody’s Analytics estimate cited by the Minneapolis Fed put top-decile spending growth at 62%. This is an inferred estimate from financial and wealth data, not a direct government measure of household consumption; the Minneapolis Fed presents it as contested.

The Minneapolis Fed’s review, “Have U.S. consumers gone ‘K-shaped’? A review of the data,” places these competing measures side by side. Its central lesson is that a headline number needs the dataset and caveat attached to it.

Why analyses disagree

Different group definitions

One study may compare income quintiles, another the bottom three quintiles with the top two, and another the top decile with everyone else. A household can move between groups as its income changes, and a top-decile comparison is not equivalent to a high-versus-low quintile comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Different outcomes

Income, individual wages, employment, spending, inflation and wealth answer different questions. The Richmond Fed’s long-run income result is not contradicted by a Richmond consumption result; they measure separate channels. A K-shaped spending pattern can occur even when income rises for every group.

Different periods

The pandemic recession, the 2021–23 reopening, the period beginning in 2024 and a 1994–2024 trend capture different shocks. A temporary divergence can fade, reverse or become more pronounced. Always put the dates beside the claim.

Different price treatment

Nominal spending growth can look strong during high inflation. Real spending adjusts for prices, but even a common inflation index may not represent each household’s basket. Lower-income families often devote a larger share of their budgets to necessities, so the same aggregate inflation rate can produce a different loss of purchasing power.

Different data methods and coverage

Government household surveys offer broad population coverage but depend on reporting and survey design. Card panels observe transactions made through participating institutions, not every purchase. Self-reported surveys measure perceptions or direction of change. Proprietary models infer outlays from financial and wealth information. A retail series may leave out services, while a total-consumption estimate may include categories unavailable in card data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Taxes, transfers and consumption smoothing

The Richmond Fed notes that taxes and transfers can narrow disposable-income differences, while consumption smoothing allows households to maintain spending temporarily by drawing on savings or borrowing. Its consumption data may also understate luxury spending. These mechanisms help explain why spending gaps can be smaller, larger or differently timed than income gaps.

Inflation and wealth: possible drivers of the split

Households face different effective inflation

Inflation is an average price change, not a single bill paid by every household. A family that spends most of its budget on food, rent, energy and transportation can experience a higher effective inflation rate than a family that spends more on discretionary services or owns a home. The New York Fed reports that, in its series, lower-income households consistently faced higher inflation than middle- and high-income households from late 2022 onward. See “Explaining the K-Shaped Economy: What’s Behind the Divide?”.

That difference can widen a real-spending gap even when nominal incomes rise for everyone. It is a factor associated with the pattern, not by itself proof that inflation caused every group difference.

Asset gains can support spending

Households with substantial stocks, retirement accounts or home equity may have gained financial wealth even when wage growth was modest. The New York Fed identifies wealth and financial-asset growth patterns as factors that may contribute to spending divergence. Association is not the same as causal proof: a study must establish whether wealth changes preceded and affected spending after accounting for income, prices and other factors.

A practical method for evaluating any K-shaped claim

  1. Write down the exact claim. Replace “the economy is K-shaped” with a statement such as “top-quintile real spending grew faster than spending for the bottom three quintiles from 2021 to 2025.”
  2. Define the groups. Record income thresholds, whether the unit is an individual or household, and whether groups can change over time.
  3. Name the outcome. Specify jobs, wages, after-tax income, spending, inflation or wealth. Do not substitute one for another.
  4. Check the price basis. For purchasing-power claims, use real values and identify the deflator or price measure.
  5. Check the source and coverage. Determine whether the data come from a government survey, payment transactions, self-reports or a model, and list what is omitted.
  6. Check the dates. Compare like-for-like periods and look for reversals when the window changes.
  7. Test the direction. Ask whether one group actually declined or merely grew more slowly. The distinction determines whether the strict K definition applies.
  8. Separate correlation from cause. Higher spending alongside higher wealth does not prove wealth caused the spending increase; wage growth alongside spending does not prove wages were the sole driver.
  9. Look for a second measure. If a card series shows a gap, compare it with a survey or government measure while preserving each source’s limitations.

What a K-shaped economy can mean for households

Lower-income households

When essential prices rise faster than income, households may cut discretionary purchases, deplete savings, delay bills or take on debt even if their nominal spending does not fall. A lower reported spending total can therefore reflect reduced quantities, substitution toward cheaper products or postponed purchases rather than lower need.

Higher-income households

Higher-income households may continue or increase discretionary spending because they have more income, liquid savings or appreciating assets. Their spending can support sectors such as travel, durable goods and services, but a strong top-end result does not demonstrate that all households share the same recovery.

Workers and job seekers

Unequal job-security concerns can affect whether people change jobs, seek training, negotiate pay or make large purchases. Perception data should be read alongside actual hiring, layoffs and participation measures rather than used as a substitute for them.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling any inequality K-shaped: A gap is not automatically a two-direction split.
  • Using nominal spending as a living-standard measure: Higher dollar outlays can simply reflect higher prices.
  • Mixing household and individual statistics: A household’s income cannot be compared directly with one worker’s wage without explaining the unit.
  • Treating card spending as total consumption: Cash, checks, rent and transactions outside the panel may be missing.
  • Presenting a modeled estimate as an observed total: Inferred personal outlays carry model assumptions and should be labeled as such.
  • Ignoring the time window: A 2021–23 result may not describe 2024–26.
  • Claiming causation from simultaneous trends: Income, wealth, prices, credit and transfers can move together.
  • Hiding uncertainty behind a single average: Report group definitions, ranges and source limitations next to the number.

Is the U.S. economy K-shaped?

There is no single unqualified answer supported by the evidence reviewed through 2026. The Richmond Fed’s long-run income data show faster gains for high-income households but positive real gains for low-, middle- and high-income households. The Atlanta Fed finds faster spending growth among higher-income households from 2021 to 2025, while the Federal Reserve’s qualitative spending responses show similar shares reporting increases across income and wealth groups and more lower-income reports of decreases. The Richmond Fed also finds that a K-shaped consumption pattern in 2021–23 looks more uniform in a later spending series. These are not interchangeable tests.

The most accurate conclusion is conditional: some U.S. indicators show widening divergence, especially in selected spending and income comparisons, but the label depends on the outcome, groups, period, prices and measurement method. A careful reader should treat “K-shaped” as a descriptive lens to investigate—not as a settled binary diagnosis.
