A Huawei Ascend chip is an AI processor in Huawei’s Ascend family, built around the company’s Da Vinci architecture. Ascend is a family name rather than one specific chip: different models are intended for AI inference or training in devices, edge systems, and data centers, often as part of Huawei Atlas hardware.
What does “Huawei Ascend” refer to?
Ascend is Huawei’s family of AI processors. Huawei positions these processors as compute building blocks for its Atlas AI infrastructure, which includes modules, accelerator cards, edge stations, servers, and clusters. The intended workload and form factor depend on the particular model and system. Huawei’s Atlas overview describes deployments spanning device, edge, and cloud environments for deep-learning inference and training.

That distinction matters when you see a product described simply as an “Ascend chip.” The name alone does not identify its generation, performance, physical format, or suitability for a particular workload. Check the model number and the system it is designed for.

How does the Ascend architecture work?
Huawei describes the Ascend 310 as a heterogeneous AI system-on-chip (SoC) based on its proprietary Da Vinci architecture. A SoC combines processing components on one chip; “heterogeneous” indicates that it integrates different types of computing resources rather than relying on a single general-purpose processor design.
#1 Best Overall
Huawei’s technical description gives the Ascend 310 a peak performance figure of 16 tera-operations per second (TOPS) at INT8 precision. That is a Huawei-published specification for that model and precision, not an independent benchmark or a measure that can be applied to every Ascend chip. Huawei’s Ascend 310 technical information identifies the chip for terminal and edge deployment.
Which Ascend models and products should you know?
Ascend 310
Huawei says it launched the Ascend 310 in 2018. The company describes this model for terminal and edge AI applications, and its published 16 TOPS figure applies specifically to INT8 operations. It should not be taken as a direct comparison with figures reported at other precisions or for other chips.
Ascend 910 and later announcements
Huawei says it launched the Ascend 910 in 2019. At its August 5, 2025 Ascend Computing Industry Development Summit keynote, Huawei discussed deployment of the 910C and announced plans for 950, 960, and 970 series chips. Those are Huawei statements about deployment and plans; an announcement or roadmap is not, by itself, evidence of current retail availability or independently validated performance. Huawei’s August 5, 2025 keynote account provides the company’s statements and launch history.

Ascend chips can appear inside larger products, not just as standalone components. For example, Huawei documents the Atlas 300I Duo as an inference accelerator card using two Ascend 310-series processors. That product illustrates why it is important to distinguish a chip from the card or server that contains it. Huawei’s Atlas 300I Duo product page describes the card.
What are Ascend chips used for?
Huawei positions the family for AI inference and training. Inference means using a trained model to produce outputs, such as classifications or predictions; training is the process of fitting or updating a model using data. The right Ascend product depends on the workload and where it will run: a device or edge deployment has different system requirements from a data-center server or cluster.
Huawei describes Atlas infrastructure across these settings, but that broad product positioning does not establish that every Ascend model supports every workload, form factor, or deployment. For a specific project, use the documentation for the exact chip or Atlas system.

For a technical comparison or purchase, start with the specific model and its complete system context. The family name or a single TOPS figure is not enough to establish fit.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Model and generation: Identify the exact Ascend chip or Atlas product; specifications and capabilities vary by model.
- Workload: Confirm whether the target is inference, training, or both for the particular product.
- Deployment and form factor: Determine whether you need a device, edge system, accelerator card, server, or cluster.
- Performance basis: Compare figures only when precision and measurement context match. Treat vendor specifications as vendor claims unless independently tested.
- System compatibility: For an accelerator card such as the Atlas 300I Duo, check host architecture, interface, physical fit, power and cooling requirements, and supported operating environment in the relevant documentation.
- Software support: Verify that the required software and model workflow are supported for the exact hardware and deployment.
- Availability: Confirm the current product listing and supply status. A roadmap announcement does not establish that a chip is available to buy.
What Huawei’s claims do—and do not—establish
The cited specifications, product descriptions, and roadmap statements come from Huawei. They establish how Huawei describes its own chips and systems; they do not independently show comparative performance against competing processors. No independent benchmark comparison is established by these materials, so a fair performance assessment requires comparable, model-specific testing and documentation.
