A hardware wallet is a physical device that keeps cryptocurrency private keys isolated from an internet-connected computer and uses those keys to sign transactions. Your coins do not sit inside the device: they remain recorded on their blockchains. The device protects the credentials that authorize transfers.

Cold storage is the broader practice of keeping those credentials offline. A hardware wallet can be used for cold storage when disconnected, but connecting it to an app does not make every transaction safe. Phishing, malicious contract approvals, wrong addresses, theft and backup mistakes remain serious risks.

What a hardware wallet actually stores

Blockchains record balances and transaction history. A wallet device stores or derives the private keys needed to prove that you may spend a balance associated with a blockchain address. It does not download or physically contain your bitcoin, ether or tokens.

The device normally creates a seed, derives private keys from it and keeps key material inside an isolated signing environment. A computer or phone can prepare an unsigned transaction, but the hardware wallet performs the cryptographic signature and returns the signed transaction without revealing the private key.

Ledger’s developer documentation describes the seed as “the root of every private key the device will ever derive.” That makes the seed—and its recovery phrase—the most important secret in the entire setup.

Hardware wallet versus cold storage

These terms overlap but are not synonyms.

Term Meaning Typical exposure
Hardware wallet A physical signer that isolates private keys and signs transactions. The device is protected from key extraction, but connected apps, transaction data and the user can still be attacked.
Cold storage A practice or state in which signing credentials stay offline except when deliberately used. Lower exposure to online malware while disconnected; physical loss, theft, destruction and backup failure remain possible.
Software wallet Wallet software running on a phone or computer, with keys stored on that host or its protected storage. Greater exposure to host malware, phishing and device compromise.

Paper or metal backups, an air-gapped computer and a hardware signer can all be parts of a cold-storage plan. The security properties depend on how keys are generated, where backups are kept and how transactions are approved.

How a transaction is signed

  1. Prepare: A wallet application builds transaction data such as the recipient, amount, network and fee.
  2. Transfer for review: The unsigned data is sent to the hardware wallet.
  3. Verify on the device: Read the recipient address, amount, network and, for smart contracts, the operation or approval shown on the device’s own screen.
  4. Sign: The device uses the private key internally. The key itself is not sent to the computer.
  5. Broadcast: The application sends the signed transaction to the blockchain network.

A compromised computer can still substitute an address, present deceptive contract data or trick you into approving an unsafe operation. The device’s screen is therefore a security checkpoint, not a guarantee that the transaction is beneficial.

The recovery phrase is the master backup

During setup, the device generates a human-readable secret recovery phrase, commonly called a seed phrase. Ledger’s documentation describes it as the backup from which all private keys are derived. Anyone who obtains the phrase can restore the wallet on a compatible device and control its funds; someone who destroys or loses the only copy may make recovery impossible.

Ledger’s security guidance states: “Never ever share your 24-word secret recovery phrase, also known as a seed phrase, in any form, with anyone.” Treat messages from support agents, websites, apps and people requesting the phrase as scams.

Safe setup and backup procedure

  1. Initialize the phrase on the hardware wallet itself. Do not let a website, phone, computer or another person generate it for you.
  2. Write every word down in the displayed order, then complete the device’s backup-verification exercise.
  3. Keep the written backup offline and in a physically protected location. A durable metal backup can reduce the risk of loss from fire, water or paper degradation.
  4. Never photograph the phrase, type it into a computer or smartphone, save it to cloud storage, paste it into a message or enter it into a support form.
  5. Keep the device PIN separate from the recovery phrase and do not disclose either one.

BIP-39, the mnemonic standard referenced in Ledger’s documentation, uses an English list of 2,048 words. A correctly generated 24-word phrase has very high combinatorial security, but that does not protect a phrase that is photographed, phished, copied or stolen.

What happens if the device is lost or destroyed?

A missing device does not automatically mean the blockchain assets are gone. If the recovery phrase remains secret and available, it can restore the wallet on a compatible replacement device. You will need to configure the replacement, enter the phrase using its approved recovery process and verify that the expected accounts and addresses appear.

The opposite scenario is more dangerous: a functioning device is not a substitute for a backup. If the phrase is lost and the device fails, is destroyed or is reset, there may be no way to recover access. If the phrase is copied by someone else, moving to a new device is not enough; the exposed wallet should be treated as compromised and funds should be transferred to a newly generated wallet with a new phrase.

What a hardware wallet does not protect against

  • Phishing: A fake wallet app or support representative can ask for the recovery phrase or redirect you to a fraudulent signing page.
  • Malicious smart contracts: You can approve a token allowance or other operation that lets a contract move assets later.
  • Address substitution: Malware or a clipboard attack can replace a copied address. Compare the complete address on the device, not only the first and last characters.
  • Deceptive transaction details: Blindly approving an unfamiliar contract call can authorize an unintended action.
  • Physical threats: Theft, coercion, fire, water and poor storage can expose or destroy the device or its backup.
  • Operational mistakes: A lost PIN, an unverified backup, an unsupported network or an incorrect recovery process can prevent access.

Offline key isolation reduces exposure to malware on the host computer; it does not make the owner invulnerable. CISA also advises protecting recovery keys and passwords because poorly secured device data can be stolen by cyber threat actors.

How to choose a hardware wallet

There is no evidence here for a universal “most secure” brand. Evaluate the device and your own operating habits against these criteria:

Criterion Questions to ask
Key isolation Does the design use a secure element or comparable isolation? Does documentation explain whether private keys can leave the device?
Transaction verification Can the screen clearly show the full address, amount, network and relevant contract data before signing?
Recovery Does setup require on-device seed generation and backup verification? Is replacement-device recovery documented? Can you use multisignature controls if your risk model requires them?
Asset and application support Are the networks and wallet applications you actually use supported? Check current compatibility before purchase because support changes.
Operations Can you safely handle PINs, firmware updates, official software downloads and a completely offline backup?

A current model such as the Ledger Nano S Plus is one example of a hardware signer documented by its manufacturer, but model names, firmware, supported assets and availability change. The recovery phrase remains the critical secret regardless of the device.

A practical cold-storage routine

  1. Buy a device through an authorized channel and inspect packaging and setup instructions for tampering.
  2. Install wallet software only from the manufacturer’s official source, then update firmware through that software when required.
  3. Generate and verify the recovery phrase on the device; do not import a phrase supplied by a seller or website.
  4. Record the backup offline, protect it from environmental damage and restrict physical access.
  5. For every payment, independently verify the address, amount, network and fee on the device screen.
  6. For every contract interaction, understand the requested approval before signing; reject anything you cannot explain.
  7. Test your documented recovery plan with a small amount before relying on the wallet for larger holdings.
  8. Review backups and access arrangements periodically without exposing the phrase to an internet-connected device.

Bottom line for storing crypto

A hardware wallet is best understood as an offline key manager and transaction signer, not a container for coins. Cold storage lowers online attack exposure when credentials stay disconnected, while disciplined recovery-phrase handling determines whether that protection survives device loss. Keep the phrase offline and secret, verify every transaction on the device and assume that a connected application—and your own decisions—can still introduce risk.
