A handheld gaming PC is a portable computer with a built-in screen, game controls and an operating system that can run PC software. Valve describes Steam Deck as “a complete, self contained gaming PC.” A Nintendo Switch is a dedicated Nintendo console built around Nintendo’s software ecosystem, game cards and three play modes: handheld, tabletop and TV.

The practical difference is platform flexibility. A PC handheld can provide a console-like gaming interface while still offering desktop-style PC functions and connections. Switch is designed as a focused console experience. Neither label guarantees that every game will work: PC-game compatibility depends on the specific handheld, operating system, game and service, while Switch compatibility depends on whether a game was released for the Nintendo platform and the relevant Switch model.

What a handheld gaming PC actually is

The phrase describes both a form factor and a platform. The form factor is a compact computer with a screen and integrated controls. The platform is PC software rather than a closed console system. In practice, that means the device is built to play games but can also expose desktop features, PC settings, peripherals and external displays.

Steam Deck as a concrete example

Valve’s Steam Deck is the clearest manufacturer-documented example. Valve calls it a self-contained gaming PC rather than a small console. Its hardware, controls and screen are integrated into one handheld body instead of being split among a tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and other accessories. The device runs SteamOS 3, which Valve identifies as Arch-based, and it includes a desktop environment for general PC use. See Valve’s Steam Deck Hardware and Steam Deck Tech Specs pages for the published details.

That description does not mean every Windows or Linux PC game automatically runs on every handheld. Compatibility can vary with the game, graphics requirements, anti-cheat system, launcher, operating system and the particular device. Treat a handheld gaming PC as a portable PC platform that may need game-by-game checking, not as a universal PC-game cartridge.

Why the operating system matters

A PC handheld’s operating system controls how you install games, change settings, connect accessories and reach desktop tools. SteamOS presents a console-like interface for supported games, but the underlying system remains a computer. Valve also documents desktop-mode and general PC use through its Desktop FAQ.

This flexibility can be useful when you want to manage files, use a browser, connect a keyboard or mouse, attach an external display, or install software outside the main game interface. It can also introduce more decisions than a dedicated console, such as checking storefront support, configuring controls or troubleshooting a game that was designed for a different PC setup.

What a Nintendo Switch is

Nintendo Switch is a dedicated Nintendo console. Nintendo’s official documentation describes a system with its own software ecosystem, a slot for Nintendo Switch game cards and three ways to play: handheld, tabletop and TV mode. The cited specifications here apply to the original Nintendo Switch family, not Nintendo Switch 2.

Handheld, tabletop and TV modes

In handheld mode, the console, screen and attached controllers travel together. In tabletop mode, the console stands on its own while the controllers are used separately. In TV mode, the system connects to a television through its dock. Nintendo documents these modes on its UK Nintendo Switch hardware page.

Detachable Joy-Con controllers

The Joy-Con controllers are central to Switch’s design. Nintendo says they can be used attached to the console or separately as two controllers. That makes local multiplayer possible without requiring every player to bring a complete gamepad, although the suitability of a particular game depends on its control requirements. The detachable design also lets you choose between carrying the system as one handheld unit and setting it on a table for shared play.

Software libraries and compatibility

What you can expect from a PC handheld

A PC handheld is suited to someone who wants access to PC games and the flexibility of a computer-based platform. However, the word “PC” is not a compatibility guarantee. A game may require a particular operating system, launcher, input method, online service or anti-cheat technology. Some titles may work immediately, while others may need control mapping, a different compatibility layer, a desktop installation or a separate operating-system setup.

Before choosing a device, make a list of the games and services you actually use. Check whether each title supports the handheld’s operating system and whether its launcher, multiplayer functions and controls are supported. This step is more reliable than assuming that a game’s Windows system requirements alone answer the question.

What you can expect from Switch

Switch is organized around Nintendo’s console platform. A game must have a Nintendo Switch release to run on the system, and physical releases use Nintendo Switch game cards. This narrower platform can make the buying decision clearer: identify the Nintendo games and Switch releases you want, then check the supported model and required accessories.

Switch compatibility is therefore a console-library question rather than a general PC-compatibility question. A PC game that is unavailable for Switch cannot be added simply because the Switch has a screen or a game-card slot.

General-purpose computer use and setup flexibility

The most important non-gaming distinction is that a handheld gaming PC remains a computer. On Steam Deck, Valve documents a desktop environment and describes the device as usable for general PC functions. You can connect peripherals, use a larger display and manage PC software, subject to the operating system and the application’s support.

Switch does not serve the same role. Its documented modes are ways to play the console on its built-in screen, a tabletop surface or a TV. It is not presented by Nintendo as a general-purpose desktop computer. If your goal includes PC applications, file management or computer-style accessory use, evaluate the handheld PC on those terms rather than comparing only game libraries.

Setup trade-off

More flexibility can mean more setup choices. You may need to adjust display scaling, controls, storage locations or compatibility settings on a PC handheld. A console normally keeps those decisions inside the manufacturer’s interface, but it also limits you to the console’s supported software and accessories. Neither approach is universally easier; they optimize for different kinds of control.

Controls, local play and external displays

Integrated controls on a PC handheld

A handheld gaming PC puts its controls around the built-in display. Valve also lists Bluetooth and USB-C support, so compatible wireless or wired peripherals can be added. USB-C can be used for peripherals and an external display according to Valve’s hardware information. The exact experience depends on the accessory and the game’s input support.

Joy-Con and shared play on Switch

Switch’s detachable Joy-Con are designed around quick changes between solo handheld use, tabletop play and local multiplayer. Nintendo says each Joy-Con can work separately as a controller. That feature is a defining part of the Switch concept, especially when a game supports two-player control with the included controllers.

Docking and display use

Switch’s TV mode is part of the console’s documented design: place the console in its dock and play on a television. A PC handheld can also connect to a larger display, but it does so as a computer using its available port and compatible accessories rather than through the same three-mode console model. This distinction matters if you want a system that changes modes with minimal configuration versus one that behaves like a small PC attached to a monitor.

Screen specifications and battery estimates

Published display specifications

The cited Steam Deck specification lists a 7-inch screen with 1280 × 800 resolution. Nintendo lists the original Switch with a 6.2-inch LCD at 1280 × 720. These numbers describe diagonal size and pixel dimensions; they do not, by themselves, establish which screen looks better in every game or lighting condition.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Why battery numbers should not be ranked casually

Valve lists a 40Wh battery and estimates 2–8 hours of gameplay for the cited Steam Deck specification. Nintendo lists approximately 4.5–9 hours for the original Switch and notes that battery life depends on the game; it gives approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as an example. The estimates come from different manufacturers and are not a controlled test under identical settings, games or brightness.

Use the ranges as planning information, not as a promise. A demanding game, higher brightness, wireless connections and other background activity can change runtime. When comparing a particular model, confirm that you are looking at the same generation and specification page; the Nintendo figures cited here do not cover Switch 2.

Storage, game media and connections

Valve lists microSD expansion for Steam Deck, allowing supported storage cards to supplement the device’s internal storage. It also lists USB-C for peripherals and external displays and Bluetooth for compatible wireless devices. Those connections reinforce the computer-platform design: the handheld can be expanded with accessories rather than being limited to its built-in controls.

Nintendo lists a slot for Nintendo Switch game cards. Physical game media is therefore part of the Switch ecosystem, alongside its digital software options. The presence of a game-card slot does not make Switch interchangeable with a PC handheld: the card carries software for Nintendo’s platform, not general PC applications.

Which type fits your use case?

Choose a PC handheld when these are your priorities

  • You want to investigate PC games rather than limit your library to a console platform.
  • You value desktop-style PC functions, file access or the ability to connect computer peripherals.
  • You want microSD expansion, USB-C accessories, Bluetooth devices or an external display as part of your setup.
  • You are willing to check compatibility and adjust settings for individual games and services.

Choose Switch when these are your priorities

  • You specifically want Nintendo’s console software and Switch game-card support.
  • You value the documented handheld, tabletop and TV modes.
  • You want detachable Joy-Con that can be used separately for supported local multiplayer.
  • You prefer a console ecosystem instead of a general-purpose PC environment.

A practical decision sequence

  1. List the games first. Separate PC titles and services from Nintendo Switch releases. Do not assume a title works across platforms because it exists on another system.
  2. Decide whether computer functions matter. If you need desktop software, external PC peripherals or file management, investigate the specific PC handheld’s operating system and support.
  3. Choose your play pattern. Consider whether you need Switch’s three documented modes and detachable Joy-Con or a PC handheld’s portable computer setup.
  4. Check model-specific specifications. Compare the exact screen, battery estimate, weight, storage expansion and ports for the models you are considering.
  5. Validate compatibility before purchase. Check the specific game, launcher, online requirements and controller support on the chosen PC handheld, or confirm that the desired title has a Switch release.

Common misconceptions to avoid

  • “A PC handheld runs every PC game.” Compatibility varies by game, service, operating system and device.
  • “The larger screen automatically looks better.” The published diagonal and resolution numbers do not measure every aspect of picture quality.
  • “The battery ranges prove a winner.” The manufacturers’ estimates use different methods and workloads, so they are not direct benchmark results.
  • “Switch and a PC handheld are the same because both are portable.” Portability is the shared form factor; the software platform, setup model and accessory ecosystem differ.
  • “A Switch specification applies to Switch 2.” The Nintendo pages cited here concern the original Switch family. Confirm current-generation specifications separately when evaluating Switch 2.

The bottom line

A handheld gaming PC is a computer redesigned for portable play: it combines a screen and controls with a PC operating system, PC game compatibility and connections such as USB-C, Bluetooth and microSD expansion. Nintendo Switch is a dedicated console centered on Nintendo software, game cards, detachable Joy-Con and handheld, tabletop and TV modes.

Start with the games and activities you need. Investigate a PC handheld if PC access and general-purpose computer functions are central, while checking compatibility title by title. Compare Switch models if Nintendo’s library, Joy-Con-based local play and its three-mode design are the deciding factors. The published specifications help describe the hardware, but they do not replace checking the exact model, game and workload.
