A ghost forest is a coastal woodland left with standing dead or dying trees after saltwater intrusion and repeated flooding overwhelm trees that depend on fresher soil and groundwater. NOAA describes it as “the watery remains of a once verdant woodland.” The dead trunks are often the visible middle stage of a broader wetland transition: salt-tolerant shrubs and marsh plants move in, and continued submergence can eventually replace forest with open water.
Rising sea level helps create ghost forests by pushing tidal water and saline groundwater farther inland and upstream, increasing the frequency, depth, or duration of flooding. The outcome is not identical everywhere. Local land subsidence, sediment supply, storms, drought, freshwater flow, topography, and human changes to drainage and waterways determine how quickly a particular forest declines and what replaces it.
What makes a forest a “ghost forest”?
The term refers to a stand of coastal trees that remains in place after the forest has been severely damaged by saltwater or chronic inundation. Trees may be leafless, thin-crowned, dying, or completely dead while their trunks and branches still stand above marsh vegetation or shallow water. The setting is usually a tidal wetland, estuary, low-lying shoreline, or tidal freshwater swamp where forest soils once received enough fresh water to support tree growth.

Drought, wildfire, insects, disease, or logging can also kill woodland. In a ghost forest, the defining environmental clue is a shift toward saltier or more frequently flooded conditions, followed by poor tree growth and failed regeneration. Soil and surface-water measurements, elevation, tidal records, and the pattern of replacement vegetation help distinguish saltwater-driven forest loss from other causes.

How rising sea level creates a ghost forest
The conversion usually unfolds as a chain of physical and biological changes. A storm can deliver a sudden pulse of saltwater, but the long-term transition is often gradual.
- Water levels rise relative to the land. Ocean-level rise increases the height reached by tides and storm surges. If the land is sinking or its sediments are compacting, the local, or relative, sea-level rise is greater than the change in ocean height alone.
- Salty water reaches forest soils more often or farther inland. Tidal channels carry saline water upstream, while salt can also move through shallow groundwater. Low-lying depressions may flood on ordinary high tides rather than only during major storms.
- Freshwater-dependent trees experience combined salt and flooding stress. Excess salt makes it harder for roots to take up water and can damage tissues. Waterlogged soils reduce oxygen available to roots. Repeated exposure can suppress growth even before trees die.
- Regeneration falters. Seedlings and saplings are especially vulnerable. When young trees cannot establish, the canopy becomes thinner and the forest loses its ability to replace older trees.
- Older trees die and remain standing. Trunks can persist as snags for years, producing the characteristic “ghost” appearance while branches and leaves disappear.
- Salt-tolerant vegetation occupies the openings. Shrubs, grasses, herbs, and other marsh plants tolerate conditions that forest species cannot. Their spread marks a transition zone rather than an immediate change to open sea.
- Persistent inundation can remove the land-based stage. If water levels rise faster than sediment accumulation and plant growth build elevation, the former woodland may eventually become marsh, shallow water, or open water.
These stages can overlap. A storm may kill trees abruptly, while the surrounding shift from forest to marsh takes decades. In other places, a forest can persist for a time if freshwater flow, sediment deposition, or inland migration keeps pace with rising water.
The transition from forest to marsh or open water
Researchers commonly describe ghost forests as an intermediate condition in a coastal landscape rather than a single endpoint.

| Stage | Typical signs | Controlling pressure |
|---|---|---|
| Coastal forest | Living tree canopy, fresh or weakly saline soils, and ongoing tree recruitment | Freshwater supply and elevation still support forest conditions |
| Transition ghost forest | Standing dead or dying trunks mixed with salt-tolerant shrubs and herbaceous plants | Salinity and flooding exceed the tolerance of many forest species, but some land remains vegetated |
| Marsh | Marsh grasses, herbs, and other wetland plants dominate; few living trees remain | Frequent inundation and saline soils favor marsh vegetation |
| Open water | Former forest surface is submerged with little emergent vegetation | Water-level rise outpaces sediment and plant elevation gain |
The boundaries are uneven. A slightly higher ridge may still carry living trees beside a lower swale filled with dead trunks and marsh plants. That patchwork is why a landscape can show several stages at once.
Why “relative” sea-level rise matters
What affects a forest is the height of water compared with the ground surface. Global ocean rise is one component, but local land movement can amplify or reduce it. Subsidence, sediment compaction, groundwater withdrawal, and construction-related changes can lower the land. NOAA notes that sinking land and compacting sediments contribute to ghost-forest formation in some locations.
Wetlands can sometimes build elevation by trapping sediment and accumulating plant material. That capacity depends on sediment delivery, tidal range, vegetation growth, and the rate of water-level rise. A marsh or forest with little sediment supply has less ability to keep its roots above increasingly frequent floods.

Why some coastlines develop ghost forests faster than others
No single factor predicts the outcome everywhere. The following conditions interact, and their relative importance varies by site.

| Local condition | How it changes the transition |
|---|---|
| Relative sea-level rise and land subsidence | Raises water relative to tree roots; subsidence can make local exposure greater than ocean rise alone. |
| Tidal and storm flooding | Delivers saline water and increases the number of days soils remain flooded; storm surges can create abrupt salt pulses. |
| Freshwater flow and drought | Freshwater dilutes and flushes salt. Drought reduces that dilution, allowing salinity to persist farther inland. |
| Elevation and topography | Low swales flood first, while higher ground may retain forest longer and create a patchwork of stages. |
| Sediment supply | Deposited sediment can help wetlands gain elevation; sediment-starved systems are less able to keep pace with rising water. |
| Space for inland migration | Marsh plants may move inland if higher ground is available. Roads, development, or steep terrain can block that shift. |
| Human alterations to waterways | Dams, dredging, drainage, and development can change freshwater delivery, tidal exchange, flow paths, or land elevation. |
Because these factors differ from one estuary to the next, a nearby forest may remain healthy while another at a similar latitude becomes a ghost forest. The comparison must use local water levels, salinity, land motion, soils, and land-use history rather than distance from the ocean alone.
What field evidence shows the process is underway?
Several observations together provide stronger evidence than dead trees by themselves:
- Tree crowns thin over time, with mortality concentrated in low or frequently flooded ground.
- Standing trunks occur among salt-tolerant shrubs, herbs, or marsh plants rather than beneath a recovering forest canopy.
- Seedlings and saplings are scarce, indicating that regeneration is failing.
- Salinity or the duration of inundation increases in soil, surface water, or shallow groundwater.
- Vegetation boundaries move inland or toward higher ground as the saltwater edge advances.
- Elevation surveys and tidal records show that the land is losing height relative to water.
Remote sensing can reveal canopy thinning and changes in aboveground biomass across broad areas, but imagery needs local ecological and hydrological context. A dead-looking canopy can also reflect drought or disease, so interpretation should combine imagery with salinity, flooding, and land-use information.

What studies show about the scale and timing
North Carolina transition-forest estimate
A 2020 study published in Environmental Research Letters found that 15% (167 km²) of unmanaged public land in its North Carolina study region changed from coastal forest to transition ghost forest between 2001 and 2014. In that study, the transition stage included salt-tolerant shrubs and herbaceous plants among remnants of the former forest. The percentage describes that geography, land category, and 13-year interval; it is not a global conversion rate or a forecast for every coast.

Saltwater can arrive before complete tree mortality
Research summarized by the U.S. Geological Survey describes saline tidal water moving upstream in upper estuaries and links forest condition to freshwater input, estuarine water levels, and salinity. This means saltwater intrusion can begin before a mature canopy has died. Early stress may appear as reduced growth, thinning, and failed recruitment, followed later by widespread standing mortality.
Aboveground carbon as a proposed early indicator
Another study associated the leading edge of sea-level influence with declines in aboveground carbon and proposed that carbon loss could help detect advancing impacts before full inundation. That is a finding and proposal from a particular research context, not a universal carbon trajectory for every ghost forest. Measurements would need to account for forest type, storm damage, drought, and other causes of biomass change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do all ghost forests end up underwater?
No. Some sites stabilize as shrub-dominated transition zones or salt marshes, especially where sediment accumulation and plant growth keep pace with water-level rise. Others lose forest but retain emergent wetland vegetation for a long period. Open water becomes more likely when relative sea-level rise is rapid, the land is subsiding, sediment delivery is weak, or barriers prevent wetlands from migrating inland.

What ghost forests mean for ecosystems and climate accounting
Replacing forest with marsh changes shade, root structure, habitat, food webs, and the way water and sediment move through the wetland. The shift can create habitat for marsh organisms while reducing habitat associated with trees. It also changes where carbon is stored—in living wood, roots, soils, and incoming plant material.
USGS notes that research on how ghost-forest deaths alter greenhouse-gas processes remains limited. A dead forest should not automatically be described as a measured source or sink of a particular amount of carbon dioxide or methane. The balance depends on decomposition, burial, water chemistry, oxygen conditions, replacement vegetation, and the local hydrology, all of which vary among sites.
How to interpret a photograph of dead coastal trees
A photograph can show the symptom but rarely proves the cause. To evaluate whether it depicts a ghost forest, ask:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Is the stand in a tidal wetland, estuary, or low-lying coastal setting?
- Are marsh plants or salt-tolerant shrubs filling the understory?
- Is there evidence of frequent flooding, tidal channels, storm overwash, or saline water?
- Are living trees and seedlings concentrated on slightly higher ground?
- Could wildfire, drought, insects, disease, or construction explain the mortality instead?
Answering those questions with time-series photographs, salinity measurements, elevation data, and land-use history gives a more reliable diagnosis than the appearance of trunks alone.
Key takeaway
Rising sea level can create a ghost forest when saltwater and flooding move into low-lying coastal woodland faster than freshwater supply, tree regeneration, sediment accumulation, and inland migration can compensate. The familiar dead trunks are a visible transition stage: forest may give way to shrubs and marsh, and in some places to open water. Because subsidence, storms, drought, sediment, topography, and human water-management changes control the local balance, every ghost forest records a site-specific interaction between rising water and the land beneath it.
