A file hosting site stores files you upload on systems run or managed by a provider, then lets you retrieve them over the internet. Depending on the service, you may also be able to sync files between devices, share them with other people, collaborate on them, or keep a copy off-site.
What a file hosting site does
At its simplest, a file hosting site gives you a place to store files online. You upload documents, photos, videos, or other files; the service keeps them on hosted systems and provides a way to access them later from an internet-connected device. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office describes cloud storage in similar terms, including access from different devices and locations: ICO guidance on cloud storage.
Many services add functions beyond storage. They may keep changes synchronized across devices, let you share selected files or folders, or allow several people to access and edit common files. These capabilities often appear together, but they are not identical, and a particular service may offer only some of them. Amazon Web Services distinguishes cloud file storage, which provides cloud-hosted shared file systems, from cloud file sharing, which gives multiple users access to common cloud-stored files: AWS explanation of cloud file storage.
File hosting, cloud storage, sharing, and backup
These terms overlap, but they emphasize different purposes:

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- File hosting is the broad idea: a provider hosts files so they can be accessed online.
- Cloud storage emphasizes storing and retrieving files using cloud infrastructure.
- File sharing emphasizes giving other people access to files.
- Website hosting is intended to serve website resources to visitors. Although it also involves hosted files, its purpose is different from a personal online file store.
- Managed backup focuses on preserving and restoring copies of data.
One service can function as cloud storage, file hosting, and a sharing or collaboration tool at the same time. Cloud storage can also be one off-site copy in a backup plan. But a synchronized folder is not automatically an independent backup: if a deletion or unwanted change synchronizes everywhere, the online copy may not preserve the earlier version. Whether a service has version history, retention, or recovery features depends on that provider.
The U.S. Copyright Office uses “storing (i.e. hosting) material at the direction of a user” to describe one category of online service activity in its discussion of DMCA Section 512. That is a U.S. copyright-law context, not a universal product definition or a guarantee that a particular service qualifies for a legal safe harbor: U.S. Copyright Office overview of Section 512.

How access and sharing work
Access controls determine who can retrieve hosted files. A service may let you keep content private to your account, invite named people, or enable broader access. A shareable link can be convenient, but anyone who obtains it may be able to view or download the file if the link settings permit that.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore sharing, check whether access is limited to specific people, whether recipients can edit or only view, and whether a link can be revoked. Also review the provider’s terms and privacy notice. The ICO recommends using a unique, strong password and enabling two-factor authentication where available.

Privacy, encryption, and security
Hosted files reside on systems controlled by the provider or its infrastructure partners. A setting labeled “private” generally describes access by other users; it does not by itself establish that the provider cannot access the content. The provider’s terms and technical design determine who can access stored data and under what circumstances.
What encryption does—and does not—tell you
HTTPS protects data while it travels between your device and the service. It does not, on its own, show that the provider cannot read files after they are stored. A service may encrypt files at rest while retaining or managing the keys needed to decrypt them.

If you need to limit provider access, consider encrypting files before uploading them or using a service where you control the encryption keys. Those approaches add responsibility: you must share keys securely with intended recipients, and losing a key may make the files unrecoverable. Security details vary by provider, so read the specific service’s documentation rather than assuming all hosts use the same protections. For example, Google states that Drive files are encrypted in transit and at rest; that statement applies to Google’s service, not to file-hosting sites generally: Google Drive encryption information.
