A direct-lit LED TV is an LCD television with LEDs positioned behind the screen to illuminate the panel. The term describes where the backlight sits—not whether the TV has local dimming or how good its picture is.
What “LED TV” means
In an LED TV, LEDs provide the backlight for an LCD panel. The LCD layer shapes that light into the image; the LEDs do not create each picture pixel. This differs from OLED, where pixels emit their own light. Sharp TV USA explains how TV backlighting works.
Where direct-lit LEDs sit
Direct-lit LEDs are placed behind the screen, facing the LCD panel. LG describes direct-lit TVs as using “several rows of LEDs placed behind the entire surface of the screen.” The arrangement is often more modest than a full-array system, but the label alone does not specify the number of LEDs. LG’s backlight comparison distinguishes direct-lit placement from full-array designs.

How direct-lit compares with other display types
| Type | Light source or control | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Edge-lit LCD | LEDs sit along one or more screen edges; a light guide spreads illumination across the panel. | Can enable a thin design, though uniformity and precise dimming can be challenging. |
| Direct-lit LCD | LEDs sit behind the screen. | Describes backlight placement; it does not guarantee dimmable zones. |
| Full-array local-dimming LCD | A rear LED array is divided into controllable zones. | Zones can adjust illumination in different areas, but the label does not state the zone count or tuning quality. |
| OLED | Pixels emit their own light. | It has no separate LCD backlight, so LED backlight placement and local-dimming descriptions do not apply in the same way. |
Sharp TV USA’s guide to TV backlighting covers these distinctions, including local dimming and blooming.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does direct-lit mean the TV has local dimming?
No. Direct-lit says that LEDs are behind the screen. Full-array local dimming is a separate capability: the rear LEDs are grouped into zones that can be controlled independently. A direct-lit TV may not have those zones, so check the specifications for the exact model rather than inferring local dimming from its backlight label. LG’s comparison and Sharp’s explanation make this distinction.
What local dimming changes—and its limitation
By dimming darker areas and illuminating brighter ones, local dimming can improve perceived contrast. However, bright objects on a dark background can produce visible halos around the objects, an effect often called blooming. The result depends on more than the backlight category: a label does not reveal zone count, control algorithms, screen uniformity, or overall picture quality. Sharp TV USA discusses blooming and the limits of backlight labels.

What to check when comparing TVs
- Backlight placement: Confirm whether the model is edge-lit or direct-lit in its manufacturer specifications.
- Local dimming: Look for an explicit statement that the TV supports local dimming; do not assume it from “direct-lit.”
- Zone count: If the manufacturer publishes one, use it as a specification—not a complete measure of picture quality.
- Real-world performance: Look for evidence about uniformity and blooming, and consider how the television performs in the room where you plan to use it.
Neither LG’s nor Sharp’s explainer establishes a universal picture-quality ranking based only on the direct-lit label. Model-level specifications and performance matter.
