A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack sends traffic from many separate systems toward a website, application, service, or network until one or more finite resources are exhausted. The result is congestion, slow responses, errors, or an outage for ordinary visitors. The attack is primarily an availability problem—not, by itself, proof that an attacker stole data or changed the site.
This guide explains the resources attackers exhaust, the three major DDoS categories, why realistic web requests are difficult to filter, and how layered defenses and an incident plan reduce the damage.
What is a DDoS attack?
“Distributed” describes the sources. A traditional denial-of-service (DoS) attack may originate from one machine or connection; a DDoS attack coordinates traffic from multiple systems. Those systems can include malware-infected computers, routers, IoT devices, and other endpoints. They do not all have to be personal computers, and an attack does not require every source to be part of one identical botnet.

Each target has limits: internet bandwidth, connection tables in firewalls and load balancers, CPU and memory in servers, database connections, and application work queues. Attack traffic consumes one or more of those limits faster than the service can release them. Legitimate requests then wait, time out, or fail because the infrastructure is busy handling the attack.

DDoS is not the same as a data breach
A DDoS attack is designed to prevent availability. It can occur alongside an intrusion, but the traffic flood itself does not demonstrate that files were read, accounts were taken over, or content was altered. Investigators should check authentication, access, and file-integrity logs separately rather than treating an outage as evidence of stolen data.
How does a DDoS attack take a website offline?
The basic sequence is resource exhaustion and congestion:
- Many sources generate traffic. Attackers direct packets, connection attempts, or web requests from distributed systems toward the target address or service.
- The path or target processes the traffic. Routers, firewalls, load balancers, web servers, and application components must inspect, route, track, or answer those arrivals.
- A finite resource is saturated. The attack can fill the internet link, consume connection state in network equipment, or occupy application workers and backend capacity.
- Normal users compete for what remains. Their requests experience queueing, packet loss, retries, timeouts, HTTP errors, or complete unreachability.
A flood does not need to crash a server. If it keeps the service at or beyond a critical capacity threshold, visitors can experience an outage even while the machines remain powered on.

Volumetric attacks send enough traffic to congest the connection between the target and the wider internet. When the link is full, legitimate packets cannot reliably reach the service or return to users. Filtering only at the origin may be too late because the access circuit is already saturated.

Protocol and state-exhaustion attacks
These attacks burden network or transport infrastructure rather than simply maximizing bytes per second. Devices must create, inspect, or retain state for large numbers of connection attempts or protocol messages. Exhausted connection tables, firewall resources, or load-balancer capacity can prevent new legitimate sessions even when bandwidth is not completely full.
Application-layer attacks
Layer 7 attacks issue requests to the website or application itself. A request may be syntactically valid and resemble a real visitor browsing, searching, logging in, or loading an expensive report. The server still spends CPU time, memory, worker threads, database connections, or downstream API capacity processing it. Because harmful requests can look normal, distinguishing an attacker from legitimate users becomes the central mitigation challenge.
Why realistic web requests are difficult to block
Network floods often have recognizable volume or protocol characteristics. Application attacks can be distributed across many addresses, use normal HTTP methods, and vary URLs, headers, cookies, or request timing. A simple rule such as “block one address” may have little effect when thousands of sources are involved. A rule that blocks every request to a busy endpoint may stop the attack but also deny genuine customers.
Recommended Free Tools
Defenders therefore combine signals: request rate, authentication status, unusual paths, geographic or network patterns, challenged-client behavior, cacheability, and the cost of backend operations. Controls should be tested against normal traffic and adjusted during an event; an indiscriminate block can become an outage caused by the defense.

How can you protect a website from a DDoS attack?
No single CDN, web application firewall, rate limit, or hosting setting makes a site immune. Resilience comes from placing controls at different points so that an attack is absorbed, filtered, or made less expensive before it reaches the most fragile component.
1. Mitigate upstream or at the edge
Use a distributed edge or provider-level mitigation service that can inspect and absorb traffic before it reaches the origin network. This is especially important for volumetric attacks, where the origin link may be saturated before an origin firewall can act. Capacity, filtering behavior, supported protocols, and response times are specific to the provider and plan; verify them rather than assuming that any “CDN” offers the same protection.
2. Cache content that does not change per request
Serve suitable images, stylesheets, scripts, and other static responses from cache. A cache hit avoids another trip to the origin and reduces origin CPU, connection, and bandwidth use. Caching cannot protect an uncached, expensive operation by itself, and incorrect cache rules can expose personalized content, so define what is public and safe to reuse.

A web application firewall (WAF) can inspect HTTP requests and apply rules for suspicious methods, paths, parameters, bots, or known attack patterns. It is most useful for application-layer events and should be tuned to the application’s actual traffic. Start with logging or a monitor mode where available, review false positives, then enforce narrowly targeted rules. A WAF cannot stop a saturated network link if traffic never reaches it.

4. Apply rate limits at the right scope
Rate limits can cap requests to login, search, checkout, API, or other costly endpoints. Choose a key that fits the threat model—such as account, token, session, network, or a combination—rather than relying on a single source IP. Exempt trusted service-to-service traffic deliberately, return a clear retry response, and monitor legitimate clients behind shared networks. Rate limiting alone may not stop a complex, distributed attack, particularly when the attack is spread across many identities.
5. Hide and restrict the origin
If users can discover the origin address and connect directly, they can bypass the edge’s cache and filtering. Restrict origin firewalls or security groups to the intended proxy, load balancer, or provider paths; remove unused public listeners; and rotate an exposed address when your architecture permits. Keep administrative interfaces on separate, restricted access paths instead of exposing them through the public site.
6. Design for graceful degradation and scaling
Separate static delivery from dynamic workloads, isolate databases and queues, set connection and request timeouts, and make expensive features shed load safely. Autoscaling can provide more capacity, but scaling every component does not guarantee resilience if a shared database, quota, or network link remains the bottleneck. Define which functions remain available when nonessential features are disabled.
Defense options compared
| Control | Primary resource or layer | Where it acts | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upstream or edge mitigation | Bandwidth and network traffic | Provider network or edge | Capabilities and capacity vary by provider and architecture. |
| Content caching | Origin bandwidth and compute | Edge cache | Does not help uncached or personalized operations. |
| WAF rules | HTTP/application requests | Edge or web gateway | Bad rules can block real users; it cannot repair a saturated link. |
| Rate limiting | Request volume at selected endpoints | Gateway, application, or API layer | Distributed traffic can evade a single-key limit. |
| Origin restriction | Bypass paths | Firewall or security group | Requires correct proxy and address management. |
| Scaling and isolation | Compute, connections, and dependencies | Application architecture | Scaling cannot remove every shared bottleneck. |
The best combination depends on the attack layer, how clearly malicious traffic differs from normal use, where filtering is possible, the risk of blocking legitimate visitors, and the prerequisites of your provider and architecture.

What should you do if your site is under attack?
- Confirm the symptom. Compare origin health, edge metrics, bandwidth, connection counts, HTTP status codes, latency, and dependency health. A failed deployment or database outage can look like a DDoS.
- Escalate to the edge or hosting provider. Open the provider’s emergency channel with the affected hostnames, IPs, start time, protocols, regions, and observed resource exhaustion. Ask what mitigation can be enabled upstream.
- Protect the origin immediately. Remove direct public access where possible, allow only the intended edge paths, and verify that DNS and load-balancer routes point through the protection layer.
- Apply narrowly scoped rules. Challenge or limit the most expensive paths, suspicious methods, or abusive identities. Watch error rates and real-user success while changing one control at a time.
- Preserve evidence. Export relevant edge, WAF, firewall, application, and authentication logs with synchronized timestamps. Keep rule changes and provider case numbers so the event can be reconstructed.
- Communicate a reduced service plan. Disable nonessential, high-cost features if needed and publish an accurate status update. Do not claim that data was breached unless separate investigation confirms it.
- Review after recovery. Identify the exhausted resource, measure which control absorbed traffic, remove temporary exceptions, rotate exposed origin addresses or credentials when appropriate, and update the runbook and capacity assumptions.
AWS-specific example
AWS describes DDoS resiliency as “the ability of your application architecture to withstand DDoS attacks while continuing to serve legitimate end users.” In AWS environments, AWS says its systems automatically mitigate network- and transport-layer attacks. Application-layer response can involve customer-configured AWS WAF protections, Shield Advanced options, AWS support, or customer-managed mitigations.
That behavior is AWS-specific, not a guarantee for every cloud or hosting provider. AWS also notes that some application-layer automatic responses are not enabled by default because an overly broad response could block valid traffic. Feature availability and the right configuration depend on the AWS services and architecture in use.
Common mistakes that make an outage worse
- Blocking an entire country or provider without evidence: this can deny legitimate customers while missing distributed sources elsewhere.
- Relying on a single IP block: distributed attacks can rotate addresses faster than manual rules can keep up.
- Assuming a rate limit is sufficient: a distributed, low-rate attack can still exhaust a costly endpoint.
- Leaving the origin exposed: attackers can bypass edge filtering and cache benefits by using the origin address directly.
- Blackholing as a routine fix: dropping all traffic makes the network inaccessible, including to legitimate users. It is a last-resort availability decision, not normal mitigation.
- Changing many controls without records: this obscures what worked and can create a second outage through configuration error.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a DDoS attack steal my website’s data?
A DDoS flood targets availability. It does not, by itself, show that data was read or changed; investigate account, access, and integrity logs separately for evidence of intrusion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs every sudden traffic spike a DDoS attack?
No. A product launch, crawler surge, software defect, or failed dependency can produce similar symptoms. Compare traffic characteristics with application, deployment, and dependency telemetry before labeling the event.
Does blocking all traffic stop a DDoS attack?
It can stop requests from reaching the origin, but it also blocks legitimate users and makes the service unavailable. Broad traffic dropping should be treated as a last-resort decision.
Do small websites need the same DDoS architecture as large services?
No. The appropriate controls depend on the site’s exposure, criticality, traffic pattern, provider, and budget. Every site should at least know its origin path, provider escalation route, and recovery steps.
