A data processing unit (DPU) is a processor designed to handle data-center infrastructure work—especially networking, storage, and security—so selected tasks can run outside the host CPU. DPUs commonly combine compute, network connectivity, and acceleration hardware, but there is no single fixed feature list that defines every product.
What a DPU does
In a data center, applications rely on infrastructure services to move and protect data, connect systems, and provide storage. A DPU is built to process some of that work, including network traffic handling, storage services, security functions such as encryption, virtualization, and management. Offloading selected tasks can free host CPU resources for application work; the practical effect depends on the hardware, software, and workload.
Vendors describe the category in complementary ways rather than through a universal standards definition. AMD’s February 25, 2026 explainer emphasizes offloading networking, storage, and security from the CPU. NVIDIA describes a DPU as combining a programmable multicore processor, a high-performance network interface, and acceleration engines in its May 20, 2020 explanation. The exact mix of hardware and supported functions varies by product.

| Component | Typical role | How it relates to a DPU |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | General-purpose computing, including running applications and operating-system tasks. | A DPU can take on selected infrastructure work that would otherwise use host CPU resources. |
| GPU | Accelerated computing, commonly for workloads that benefit from parallel processing. | It serves a different primary purpose from the DPU’s infrastructure and data-movement focus. |
| DPU | Processing data-center infrastructure tasks, especially networking, storage, security, and data movement. | Capabilities depend on vendor and model; there is no single feature checklist shared by all products. |
| SmartNIC | A network interface card with added processing or offload capabilities. | A DPU may be integrated into SmartNIC hardware, but the terms are not interchangeable in every use. |
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang summarized NVIDIA’s framing this way: “The CPU is for general-purpose computing, the GPU is for accelerated computing, and the DPU, which moves data around the data center, does data processing.” It is a vendor executive’s explanation, not a formal industry definition.

What a DPU looks like in practice
NVIDIA’s BlueField line provides concrete enterprise examples. The BlueField-2 DPU User Guide describes a data-center infrastructure-on-a-chip product for enterprise, high-performance computing, and cloud workloads, with software-defined networking, storage, security, and management functions. NVIDIA’s HGX AI Factory architecture documentation specifies one BlueField-3 DPU per server in a stated configuration and describes a 400 Gb/s infrastructure compute platform. That bandwidth figure applies to the documented product and configuration; it is not a general DPU performance figure.
These are specialized data-center products, not ordinary desktop upgrades. For any deployment, check the specific server, software, and product documentation for compatibility and supported features.

What the term does not guarantee
- A fixed architecture: NVIDIA’s processor, network-interface, and acceleration-engine description explains its design framing; it is not a requirement every vendor must meet.
- Interchangeability with a SmartNIC: The categories overlap, but a DPU and a SmartNIC should not automatically be treated as synonyms. Boundaries among DPU, SmartNIC, IPU, and ordinary NIC terminology can vary.
- A guaranteed performance gain: Offloading can change how host resources are used, but the available product descriptions do not establish a universal CPU saving, latency improvement, or power reduction.
- Consumer-oriented use: DPUs are discussed here as data-center infrastructure processors, with capabilities and compatibility tied to particular systems and workloads.
