A cryptocurrency public ledger is a shared database that records digital-asset transfers and, on some networks, smart-contract activity. Instead of one bank or company maintaining the master copy, many independent computers keep synchronized copies, verify proposed transactions and follow rules for accepting new blocks. The result is publicly inspectable history that is designed to resist unauthorized changes—not an unconditional promise that every record, wallet or application is immune to failure.
What a public crypto ledger records
Most cryptocurrency ledgers record transfers between cryptographic addresses. An address is derived from public-key cryptography and is not automatically a person’s legal name. The ledger can therefore show which address sent an asset, which address received it, the amount and the transaction’s position in the chain, while leaving the real-world identity unstated.
Some networks record more than payments. They may store token movements, smart-contract calls, balances or other contract state. A token, the network that records it, the wallet that controls signing keys and the application that uses the network are separate layers. Confusing them can lead to mistakes about who controls an asset or where a problem occurred.
How the blockchain ledger works
1. A wallet signs a transaction
A wallet creates a transaction and signs it with a private key. The corresponding public information lets network nodes verify that the signature is valid and that the transaction follows rules such as balance, format and spending conditions. Possession of the private key is what authorizes the transfer; the wallet interface itself is not the asset’s owner.

2. The transaction is broadcast
The signed transaction is sent to the peer-to-peer network. Nodes receive it, check the signature and other rules, and generally hold valid transactions while they await inclusion in a block. Invalid transactions are rejected rather than added to the shared history.
3. A consensus process selects or confirms a block
Networks use consensus rules to agree on which transactions belong in the next block and which chain is authoritative. Bitcoin uses a proof-of-work design; Ethereum uses proof of stake, in which participating validators help propose and confirm blocks. The exact participants, incentives, penalties and confirmation process vary by network.
4. Nodes replicate the accepted block
Once accepted, the block is propagated and stored by many nodes. Each block contains a cryptographic reference to its parent. Altering an older transaction would change that block’s cryptographic fingerprint and break the references in later blocks, requiring the network to accept the altered history under its consensus rules.

Why blocks are linked
The chain structure makes unauthorized editing detectable. NIST describes blockchain as a “shared, tamper-evident, and tamper-resistant digital ledger.” “Tamper-evident” means a change leaves evidence; “tamper-resistant” means the network’s design makes an accepted history difficult to rewrite under normal operating assumptions. It does not mean that no software defect, governance decision, compromised key or coordinated network attack can ever affect outcomes.
NISTIR 8202 characterizes blockchains as distributed ledgers, usually without a central repository or central authority. The design is append-oriented: new records are added, while previously published transactions are not normally overwritten by an administrator.
What “public” means—and what it does not
On a public ledger, transaction data and address activity can be inspected with network software or a block explorer. Public visibility is not the same as legal-name identification. Bitcoin is commonly described as pseudonymous: addresses are visible and the protocol does not require an identity to create one, but outside information can sometimes connect an address to a person or organization.

- Seedless by design, nothing to steal: Your private key is generated inside the EAL6+ chip and never leaves it. No seed phrase is shown or typed at setup, so a tampered device, keylogger, or phishing site has nothing to capture. 9+ years, millions of card.

- Backup without a seed phrase: Your wallet is copied to 2 backup cards with end-to-end encryption, so there are no words on paper to lose or leak. Keep them in separate places; if one card is lost, the others restore full access. Optional seed phrase for advanced users.
- Engineered to last up to 25 years: Waterproof (IP69K), shockproof and tested for extreme temperatures from −25°C to 50°C. A durable cold wallet with long‑term protection and independently audited security.

- Public: transaction records, addresses, amounts and timing can be visible.
- Pseudonymous: the protocol may show an address rather than a name.
- Not automatically anonymous: repeated behavior, exchange records, device data or other evidence can enable analysis.
Bitcoin and Ethereum as examples
Bitcoin
Bitcoin was the first blockchain-based cryptocurrency. Its public ledger records signed transfers between addresses. The network’s proof-of-work consensus and transaction-validation rules determine which transfers are accepted into the chain.

Ethereum documentation describes its blockchain as a public database shared across many computers. Blocks reference parent blocks, nodes maintain agreement and the network uses proof of stake. Ethereum also supports smart contracts, so the ledger can record contract state and interactions in addition to ordinary asset transfers; users pay network fees for those operations.
Can a blockchain transaction be changed?
Under normal operation, a published transaction is not edited in place. A correction usually requires a new transaction, such as sending an asset back, and the recipient must cooperate. If the wrong address was used, a private key was stolen or an unauthorized signature was accepted, there may be no central administrator with authority to reverse the entry.

“Immutable” should therefore be read as a qualified engineering property. Rewriting history would require the network to accept a conflicting chain or a protocol-level change, and the practical difficulty depends on the network’s consensus, participation and software. The underlying claim is tamper resistance under stated assumptions, not an absolute guarantee for every implementation or circumstance.

Private-key loss or exposure
The private key controls authorization. Losing it can permanently prevent access; exposing it can let another party sign transfers. A wallet provider may help manage keys, but custody arrangements change who bears recovery and security responsibilities.

A valid transaction sent to the wrong address can be final from the network’s perspective. Because the system is designed without a central authority, users should verify the destination, asset, network and amount before signing.

Public traceability
Even without names on-chain, visible address histories can reveal balances, counterparties, timing and relationships. Reusing addresses or linking them to identifiable services can make activity easier to attribute.
Consensus and software dependence
Ledger integrity depends on node software, validation rules, consensus participants and the network continuing to follow its protocol. Bugs, upgrades, operational failures or attacks can produce delays, competing histories or losses even when the cryptography works as designed.
Layer confusion
A failure in an application, exchange, bridge or wallet is not necessarily a failure of the underlying ledger. Conversely, a confirmed ledger transaction may still leave an application showing an incorrect balance until its own systems update. Evaluate each layer separately.
How to compare public ledgers
When evaluating Bitcoin, Ethereum or another network, compare the properties that determine how its ledger behaves:
| Criterion | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Consensus | Is it proof of work, proof of stake or another mechanism? Who may propose or confirm blocks? |
| Recorded activity | Does it primarily record payments, tokens, smart-contract state or several types? |
| Validation | What software and rules do nodes use to reject invalid transactions? |
| Fees | How are transaction fees calculated, and can demand make them unpredictable? |
| Privacy | Which addresses, amounts and histories are public, and how easily can activity be linked? |
| Operational dependence | What wallet, key-management and application risks remain outside the ledger itself? |
Practical safety checklist
- Confirm the network and asset before signing; similarly named tokens can exist on different networks.
- Check the full destination address using a trusted method rather than relying only on a shortened display.
- Protect private keys and recovery phrases from screenshots, cloud notes, messages and unverified support contacts.
- Send a small test amount when a destination or network is unfamiliar.
- Review the transaction on the relevant public ledger after broadcasting, while remembering that confirmation status can change until the network’s rules treat it as settled.
- Keep wallet software and operating systems updated, and understand whether a service or you control the keys.
What the ledger does not guarantee
A public blockchain can provide a shared, auditable record without providing identity verification, price stability, recovery of lost keys, protection from scams, or a guarantee that an application will perform correctly. Security is a system property involving cryptography, software, people, governance and operational practices—not just the block structure.
