A crypto wallet migration can mean two very different things. You may restore the same recovery phrase in a new app or on a new device, which changes only the interface used to reach your accounts. Or you may create a completely new key set and send assets to new addresses, which is a true key rotation and requires blockchain transactions and fees.

You normally do not need new keys because you bought a phone, reinstalled an app, or prefer another compatible wallet. You should create new keys and transfer assets when a recovery phrase or private key may have been exposed, unauthorized transactions appear, or you deliberately want to replace the old keys.

Wallet migration has two meanings

Restoring the same wallet in different software

A recovery phrase is a human-readable backup for a wallet’s key material. When you enter that phrase into compatible wallet software, the software derives the same accounts and addresses. The blockchain does not see this as a transfer: your balances, token approvals, NFTs and contract positions remain at the same addresses, controlled by the same keys.

This is the appropriate path after replacing a phone, reinstalling an application, changing browsers, or moving to another wallet interface that supports your phrase and networks. It is an access restoration, not a security reset. Anyone who obtains the phrase can usually recreate the same wallet elsewhere.

Rotating keys and moving assets to new addresses

A security migration creates a new wallet with an unrelated recovery method. You then send assets from the old addresses to addresses controlled by the new keys. Each send is an on-chain transaction, so the move can take multiple transactions and incur network fees. The old keys still exist; the migration is complete only when you have secured the new keys and dealt with everything that remains under the old ones.

Action Addresses and keys On-chain transfer? Typical reason
Restore or import an existing phrase Same keys and addresses No New device, reinstall, or compatible app change
Create a fresh wallet and send assets New keys and addresses Yes Suspected exposure, unauthorized activity, or planned key rotation

When you do not need a fresh-key migration

  • You changed phones. Install a trusted wallet application, use its supported recovery process, and restore the existing phrase. A lost or broken device does not by itself compromise the keys if the phrase was kept private.
  • You reinstalled the wallet. Reinstallation removes local app data, not the blockchain account. Restore the phrase, then check that the expected networks and accounts are enabled.
  • You prefer another compatible interface. First confirm support for the phrase format, chains and derivation paths you used. Importing the phrase gives the new app access to the same accounts; it does not move funds.

A restored wallet may initially look empty even when the addresses hold assets. Many applications show only a default account or a limited set of networks. Accounts created by separately importing a private key, accounts on a hardware device, and accounts derived from another recovery phrase may have to be added again. Wallets can also use different derivation paths, so the same phrase may produce different visible account indexes in different software.

When a fresh-key migration is justified

Recovery phrase or private-key exposure

If your phrase was typed into a website, photographed, stored in a cloud-synced note, pasted into chat, or shown to another person, treat it as compromised. The same applies to a private key. Do not try to make the old wallet “safe” by changing an app password; the attacker can continue using the exposed key.

MetaMask’s official warning is unambiguous: “Never share your SRP or private keys with anyone — not even the MetaMask team, even though we will never ask you for this information.” Ethereum.org likewise states: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!” A request for either credential is a theft attempt, including a request claiming to come from support.

Unauthorized transactions or approvals

Unexpected sends, NFT transfers, token approvals, or contract interactions are evidence that someone may control the wallet or an application connected to it. Move valuable assets to fresh keys rather than merely disconnecting a website or reinstalling the wallet. Review and revoke risky approvals where your network provides a reliable tool, but do not treat revocation as a replacement for key rotation when the key itself may be exposed.

Intentional separation of risk

You may choose new keys for operational reasons: separating long-term holdings from daily transactions, changing a business custodian, or retiring a wallet whose backup handling no longer meets your standards. This is a planned rotation, not an emergency, but it still requires a complete inventory and fee budget.

Prepare before moving anything

1. Create the destination wallet independently

Use a clean, trusted installation and generate a new recovery method. Verify that the wallet displays a newly generated address and that the backup is recorded offline. Never save a phrase in email, a screenshot, a cloud-synchronized document, a password manager field intended for ordinary passwords, or a support conversation. Keep the backup private and make sure you can restore it before sending substantial value.

2. Inventory every holding and permission

  • Fungible tokens and stablecoins on each network.
  • NFTs, including items held outside the default collection view.
  • Liquidity-provider positions, staked assets, lending deposits and rewards.
  • Smart-contract ownership, administrator roles, multisignature participation and vesting or lockup positions.
  • Accounts imported by private key or held on a hardware device.

A position locked in a contract may need to be withdrawn or migrated through that protocol before the wallet can be retired. Sending the visible coin balance does not automatically transfer a liquidity position, contract role or staked deposit.

3. Confirm network and asset compatibility

Check the destination wallet’s current documentation for every network and asset in your inventory. A recovery phrase does not make all chains interchangeable. Bitcoin uses different network rules and address formats from Ethereum-style networks. EVM-compatible chains can often use the same account in suitable software, but that does not guarantee that every token, network endpoint or application is supported. Smart-contract wallets can have a narrower supported scope than ordinary key-based accounts.

4. Budget fees and transaction count

Every blockchain send consumes the source network’s fee asset. A migration containing many tokens, NFTs or networks can require many transactions, and fees can change while you work. Keep enough native currency in the old wallet to complete the planned sends, and avoid transferring the final fee reserve before the last transaction is confirmed. If funds are spread across networks, plan fees separately for each one.

5. Verify addresses through a trusted channel

Copying an address from an untrusted message, browser extension or clipboard can redirect a transfer. Compare the destination address on the sending screen with the address shown inside the newly created wallet, ideally using an independent display such as a hardware-wallet screen. Confirm the network as well as the hexadecimal address; the same-looking account can be interpreted differently on another chain.

Step-by-step process for a true key-rotation migration

  1. Stop adding risk to the old wallet. Disconnect unfamiliar applications and do not sign new messages or approvals while you investigate. If compromise is active, prioritize moving the most valuable and liquid assets first.
  2. Set up and back up the new wallet. Generate the wallet in a trusted environment, write the new recovery method offline, and verify that a restore would reproduce the intended destination account.
  3. Record the inventory. Note the source address, destination address, network, asset, contract or protocol position, and any lockup or withdrawal requirement. Keep transaction identifiers as records.
  4. Fund the source wallet for fees. Leave enough native currency on each network for the transfers. If the old wallet has no fee asset, obtain the smallest practical amount through a route that does not expose the new recovery phrase.
  5. Send a small test when practical. Transfer a modest amount on the exact intended network, wait for confirmation, and check the destination wallet and a block explorer. This is a risk-reduction practice, not a guarantee against every address or contract error.
  6. Transfer the remaining assets by network. Use the wallet’s current send flow, confirm the address and network on every transaction, and allow confirmations before moving to the next group. Handle NFTs, staking, liquidity and contract-controlled positions through their respective applications rather than assuming a token send covers them.
  7. Re-add accounts and verify state. Imported private-key accounts, hardware accounts and non-default derivation indexes may need manual addition in the destination interface. Check balances, NFT ownership, protocol positions and required permissions.
  8. Retire the old keys deliberately. Keep the old wallet only if you have a documented reason and can secure it. If compromise was suspected, do not return assets to it or reuse its phrase for a new purpose.

What a normal transfer does—and does not—move

Holding or control What to do Why a simple token send may be insufficient
Native coins and standard tokens Send on the correct network to the new address Each network has its own fee asset and confirmation rules
NFTs Transfer each item or use the collection’s supported transfer flow NFTs are separate contract records, not included in a coin transfer
Liquidity or lending positions Withdraw, migrate or recreate the position according to the protocol The position may be represented by a contract or receipt token and may be locked
Staked or vested assets Check the unlock, withdrawal and redelegation rules first Early withdrawal may be impossible, delayed or subject to penalties
Smart-contract ownership or admin rights Use the contract’s ownership-transfer procedure Sending the wallet’s balance does not change an administrator address
Wallet connections and approvals Reconnect only trusted applications and review approvals Connections are permissions, not assets, and may remain associated with old keys

Derivation paths and missing accounts

Wallet software derives many accounts from a phrase according to a path. A new application may support only the default BIP-44 path or may present account indexes in a different order. MetaMask’s phrase-import guidance, for example, describes support for its default BIP-44 path; accounts created through another path may not appear automatically.

If the phrase restores an apparently empty account, do not immediately create another migration. Confirm the original address, enable the correct network, add the token using its verified contract address, and look for an account-import or derivation-path setting. A separately imported private key is not recreated by restoring the phrase that happened to be open in the same app.

Where a hardware wallet fits

A hardware wallet is a physical option for keeping private keys offline and signing transactions from a dedicated device. It can be useful when you are creating fresh keys for long-term custody, but buying one does not itself migrate assets. You still must generate a new address, verify it, and send assets on-chain if the old keys are being replaced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before choosing any device, check current support for the exact networks, assets, derivation paths and applications in your inventory. No single device should be assumed to support every chain or contract. Follow the manufacturer’s current recovery and firmware procedures, and never type the device’s recovery phrase into a website or ordinary wallet app.

Common failure modes and fixes

  • The restored wallet shows zero. Check the network, account index, derivation path and token contract. Confirm the address on a trusted block explorer before concluding that funds are missing.
  • A transfer is pending. Check the transaction on the network’s explorer. Do not submit repeated replacements unless you understand the wallet’s nonce and fee controls.
  • The destination rejects the asset. Stop and verify network compatibility. An unsupported token may require the destination wallet to add the correct network or contract; sending on the wrong chain can make recovery difficult or impossible.
  • There is not enough fee currency. Leave a reserve on the source network or obtain a small amount through a trusted route. Do not reveal the phrase to anyone offering to “unlock” the transfer.
  • Only some accounts appear. Add separately imported keys, hardware accounts and additional derivation indexes manually, using the wallet’s current documented process.
  • An exchange login is unavailable. This is custodial account recovery, not self-custody phrase recovery. Contact the exchange through its official support channel and never provide a self-custody phrase to an agent.

Security rules that apply throughout

  • Anyone with a recovery phrase or private key can usually control the associated assets.
  • Wallet support staff should not need your phrase, private key or device PIN.
  • Use the official application source, verify addresses on a trusted screen and treat unsolicited recovery instructions as hostile.
  • Keep an offline record of what was moved, including networks and transaction identifiers, without recording the recovery phrase in that log.
  • Check the wallet’s current version and network documentation before following interface-specific instructions; labels and supported chains can change.

The practical decision is simple: restore the same phrase when the keys remain private and usable; create fresh keys and transfer assets when the keys may be compromised or you intentionally want new control. The planning burden lies in the details—every network, contract position, fee and separately imported account must be accounted for before the old wallet is abandoned.
