A CompactFlash card is a removable flash-storage card built to the CompactFlash standard. The CompactFlash Association (CFA) identifies its interface as Parallel ATA (PATA) and classifies the specification as legacy. It is a specific format—not a generic name for camera memory cards.

What CompactFlash means

CompactFlash, often abbreviated CF, is a particular removable-media standard. A device must support CompactFlash to use a CompactFlash card; being a camera or having a memory-card slot does not establish compatibility.

The CFA lists CompactFlash among its removable-media standards and identifies PATA as its interface. Its designation of CompactFlash as a legacy specification describes the standard’s status in the CFA’s portfolio. It does not, by itself, establish whether cards are currently available or whether a specific camera supports them.

How CompactFlash differs from other card formats

CompactFlash, CFast, CFexpress, and XQD are separate standards, not interchangeable names for the same card. The CFA distinguishes their interfaces as follows:

#1 Best Overall
SANDISK 128GB Extreme CompactFlash Memory Card, UDMA 7
  • Exceptional Shot to Shot Performance ; Read speeds of up to 120MB/s and write speeds of up to 85MB/s
  • Professional Grade Video Capture ; VPG 20 ensures sustained data recording rate of 20MB/s for a smooth and unbroken video stream
  • Durable Design ; Backed by rigorous stress, shock, and vibration testing and includes RTV silicone coating for protection against shock and vibration
  • It operates in nearly any climate, with a functioning temperature range of -13 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit
Format Interface identified by the CFA
CompactFlash Parallel ATA (PATA)
CFast Serial ATA (SATA)
CFexpress PCIe and NVMe
XQD The cited CFA card-types page does not state an interface for XQD.

Because these are distinct formats, a card that seems to serve the same purpose may still be physically or electronically incompatible with a CompactFlash slot. Do not assume a newer format will substitute for CompactFlash, or that a CompactFlash card will fit a different-format slot.

How to check whether a card will work

  1. Identify the exact format. Check the device label or manual for explicit support for CompactFlash. If a listing says only “CF,” confirm that it means CompactFlash rather than CFast or CFexpress.
  2. Check capacity and speed requirements. Use the device documentation and the card documentation to confirm supported capacity and any speed requirements. These limits vary by device and card; the format name alone does not establish them.
  3. Verify reader support for transfers. If you need to copy files to a computer, confirm that the card reader explicitly supports CompactFlash. A reader for another camera-card format may not work.

The CFA’s overview establishes the format distinctions, but compatibility is device-specific. The card-types page does not provide a list of compatible cameras, current inventory, or model-level capacity limits.

What to look for when buying a replacement

For a device that explicitly supports this format, look for a product described as a CompactFlash memory card. Confirm the exact format, supported capacity, and any other requirements in the host device’s manual before purchase. For file transfer, check that a reader specifies CompactFlash support. The CFA’s legacy designation is not a guarantee that a card or reader is available from any particular seller.
