A color lookup table (LUT, short for “Look Up Table”) maps input color values to output values. In image and video software, applying one changes pixel color and luminance according to that mapping. LUTs can create a creative look or perform a technical color transformation, but the result depends on the LUT’s expected input and intended output.
What is a LUT?
A LUT is a stored mapping: software takes a color value, looks up the corresponding output value, and applies that result. Adobe describes LUTs as optimized color-grading operations, while Blackmagic Design’s Resolve documentation describes them as tables that transform image color and luminance.
The lookup operation itself is not a complete color-management system. A LUT only transforms the values it receives; it does not automatically identify whether the image is encoded in the format the LUT expects or whether the result suits the rest of a project’s pipeline.

How do 1D and 3D LUTs differ?
The “1D” and “3D” labels describe how the table maps input values—not the dimensions of the image and not a simple ranking of quality.

A 3D LUT is not automatically the better choice. The right structure depends on the transformation required, the input and output color spaces, the LUT’s resolution and interpolation, and how the application processes it. Implementations differ, so there is no universal performance ranking or single best grid size established by the cited documentation.
What are LUTs used for?
- Creative looks: Adjust contrast, saturation, and color to give a clip or image a particular appearance.
- Technical transforms: Convert among input, working, display, and output color spaces as part of a color-management workflow.
- Reusable processing: Save and apply a mapping across supported projects or applications. Autodesk’s color-management documentation describes composing transforms for reuse, while noting that features vary by product.
A creative look LUT should not be treated as a one-click fix for footage whose color encoding does not match the LUT’s assumptions. First identify the source encoding and the transformation the LUT is meant to perform.

Why can a LUT look wrong?
A LUT produces output based on the values it receives. If the source footage, working space, or processing stage differs from what the LUT expects, the result may be too contrasty, oddly saturated, or otherwise unexpected. The same LUT can therefore look different in different pipelines.

- Check the source footage’s encoding or color space and the LUT’s expected input.
- Confirm the intended output color space or display target.
- Check where the application applies the LUT in its processing order. Resolve documentation, for example, distinguishes timeline LUTs from viewer or display LUTs.
- Verify that the application supports the LUT’s file format and that the LUT is being loaded in the intended role.
There is no universal placement rule for every LUT and application. Autodesk notes that available color-management features differ across products; Adobe’s Substance 3D Painter documentation gives a specific example in which, with its color profile active, a LUT must translate from a linear profile to the desired target.

How do you apply a LUT in Adobe Premiere?
- Select a clip and open Lumetri Color.
- Open the Input LUT menu.
- Select a LUT saved on your computer, or browse to its file. Adobe’s instructions for this workflow were last updated January 7, 2026: Add Look-up Tables in Premiere.
Premiere can also export reusable .cube LUT files from the Lumetri panel. The exact export controls are documented in Adobe’s Save and export Look-up Tables in Premiere instructions, last updated January 7, 2026. A .cube file is useful only where the receiving application supports that format and the LUT’s input/output assumptions fit the target workflow.
What should you check before choosing a LUT?
- Purpose: Is it a creative look or a technical transform?
- Input: What footage encoding or color space does it expect?
- Output: What working space, display, or output target is it designed to produce?
- Placement: At what stage of the application’s processing sequence should it be applied?
- Compatibility: Does the application support the file format and LUT role you need?
These checks help distinguish the LUT’s mathematical mapping from the broader color-management pipeline that prepares and interprets the image.
