A Compression Attached Memory Module (CAMM) is a removable computer memory module that connects through a compression connector rather than the edge contacts of a conventional SO-DIMM. CAMM2 is the JEDEC-standardized version of this design; LPCAMM2 is a low-power, LPDDR-based variant. The names do not guarantee compatibility: the computer must support the exact module type and configuration.

What does “compression attached” mean?

With a conventional SO-DIMM, the module’s edge contacts slide into a slot. A CAMM instead rests against a compression connector, and screws secure the module so its contacts meet the connector. The name describes this attachment method—not a particular speed, capacity, or guarantee that a module will fit a given computer.

Kingston’s May 2024 explainer describes the compression connection and screw mounting in its CAMM overview.

How do CAMM, CAMM2, and LPCAMM2 differ?

CAMM

CAMM is the general category name for compression-attached memory modules. Early CAMM designs were proprietary, according to JEDEC’s standard scope.

CAMM2

CAMM2 is the standardized version defined by JEDEC Standard No. 318. Its scope covers DDR5 and LPDDR5/5X CAMM2 modules intended for use as main memory in computers, laptops, and other systems. That broad standard does not mean every CAMM2 module works in every compatible-looking device.

LPCAMM2

LPCAMM2 is a low-power CAMM2 variant based on LPDDR memory. Samsung describes it as a detachable way to use LPDDR memory in compatible compact computers. Whether it can be replaced or upgraded in practice also depends on the computer’s design.

See the JEDEC Standard No. 318 scope and Samsung’s LPCAMM2 product information for the manufacturers’ descriptions.

How does CAMM compare with SO-DIMM?

Aspect CAMM/CAMM2 SO-DIMM
Connection Module presses against a compression connector and is secured with screws. Module edge contacts insert into a slot.
Memory technologies JEDEC Standard No. 318 covers DDR5 and LPDDR5/5X CAMM2 implementations; a system supports only its specified types. The relevant type depends on the particular system and module.
Form-factor rationale Compression-mounted layouts are intended to help meet compact-system design constraints. Uses a conventional module slot.
LPDDR replaceability LPCAMM2 provides a detachable LPDDR-based module, where supported by the computer. SO-DIMM availability depends on the system; this comparison does not establish a universal upgrade path.

Samsung’s undated LPCAMM2 product page, accessed in 2026, reports a 60% smaller mounting area than its specified comparison: two SO-DIMM x64 I/O systems versus one LPCAMM2 x128 I/O system. This is Samsung’s comparison, not a universal measurement for all CAMM2 layouts.

Are CAMM2 modules faster or more power-efficient?

Not categorically. CAMM2 describes a module standard and connection approach; performance and power depend on the particular memory and system.

Samsung’s undated LPCAMM2 product page, accessed in 2026, reports a data transfer rate of 8,533 Mbps and compares it with 6,400 Mbps for SO-DIMM. It also claims 60% less operating power and 72% less standby power than SO-DIMM. Samsung says its product data comes from internal laboratory testing, results may vary, and specifications can change without notice. These are Samsung’s product-page claims, not independent results or guarantees for every CAMM2 product.

How can you check whether a CAMM2 module fits your computer?

  1. Find the exact computer model and configuration in its manufacturer documentation.
  2. Confirm whether it supports CAMM2, LPCAMM2, or another specified memory type. Do not infer support from the connector’s appearance or a general CAMM2 label.
  3. Check the supported memory technology, such as DDR5 or LPDDR5/5X, along with the capacity and configuration limits documented for that system.
  4. Verify that the specific module matches those requirements before buying. A standard’s scope or a module’s advertised specifications alone do not establish system compatibility.

JEDEC Standard No. 318 defines the CAMM2 category and its covered technologies, while Samsung’s LPCAMM2 information describes its product variant; neither substitutes for the computer maker’s compatibility documentation.
