A brown dwarf is a substellar object that forms when a cloud of gas collapses, much as a star does, but never becomes massive enough to sustain hydrogen fusion in its core. It can still give off its own faint radiation—especially infrared light—from leftover heat and gravitational energy. Its atmosphere may look chemically and physically similar to that of a giant planet, which is why brown dwarfs occupy an intriguing middle ground in astronomy.

The simple label “failed star” is useful only as a rough description. A brown dwarf is not a star because it does not maintain hydrogen fusion, and it is not automatically a planet because its formation may have been star-like rather than disk-based. For some low-mass, free-floating objects, astronomers still cannot determine which description is most accurate.

What defines a brown dwarf?

The defining feature is the absence of sustained hydrogen fusion. In a normal star, gravity compresses the core until temperatures and pressures are high enough for hydrogen nuclei to fuse continuously. That fusion supplies the energy that allows a star to shine for most of its life. A brown dwarf never reaches the necessary core conditions.

Brown dwarfs are nevertheless self-luminous objects. They radiate energy left over from their formation and energy released as gravity slowly compresses them. Because they are much cooler and dimmer than ordinary stars, most of their detectable radiation is in the infrared rather than visible light. As they age, they cool and become harder to see.

They are called “substellar” because they are below the mass needed for normal stellar hydrogen burning. Their atmospheres can contain clouds and molecules associated with giant planets, including water, carbon monoxide and methane. That atmospheric resemblance does not by itself determine how the object formed.

How a brown dwarf differs from a star

Fusion is the decisive physical difference

A star has a self-sustaining hydrogen-fusion engine in its core. A brown dwarf does not. Both begin, in the star-like formation scenario, as dense regions in a molecular cloud that collapse under gravity. The collapsing material heats up, but a brown dwarf’s final mass is too low for hydrogen fusion to continue indefinitely.

A brown dwarf may briefly burn deuterium, a heavier form of hydrogen, if its interior becomes hot enough. Deuterium burning is a short-lived stage and is not the same as the sustained hydrogen fusion that defines a star. It is therefore a poor basis for treating every object above or below one exact mass as belonging to a different category.

Brightness and temperature

Stars are generally bright enough to dominate visible-light observations at great distances. Brown dwarfs are much fainter. Their visible output can decline as they cool, while infrared instruments remain sensitive to their heat. This is why infrared surveys and spectroscopy are central to finding and characterizing them.

A well-known early example

NASA dates the first clear evidence for a brown dwarf to 1995, when Gliese 229B was identified as a companion to the red star Gliese 229. Its infrared spectrum contained methane, a molecule associated with cool, giant-planet-like atmospheres. NASA reported an estimated mass of 20 to 50 times Jupiter’s mass. The discovery showed that an object could be too massive and self-luminous to fit comfortably among planets, yet lack the defining fusion of a star.

How a brown dwarf differs from a planet

Formation history is the main conceptual distinction

NASA’s overview describes planets as assembling from material left in a disk around a newborn star. Dust and gas in that disk collide, stick together and eventually build planetary bodies. Brown dwarfs, by contrast, can form directly through the gravitational collapse of gas, like stars. In that sense, a brown dwarf’s birth mechanism may be more star-like even when its atmosphere resembles a planet’s.

Formation history is difficult to establish for a faint object far from Earth. Astronomers may not see the original cloud or disk, and a planet can be thrown out of its planetary system. As a result, “planet” and “brown dwarf” cannot always be assigned from a single observation or from mass alone.

Intrinsic radiation versus reflected light

A brown dwarf emits its own faint infrared radiation. A mature planet is commonly detected because it reflects light from its host star, although planets can also retain internal heat. The key point is that a brown dwarf does not need a nearby star to illuminate it: a free-floating brown dwarf can glow on its own, even though it is far too faint to look like a normal star.

Similar atmospheres do not imply identical origins

Giant planets and brown dwarfs can have clouds and overlapping molecular signatures. Spectroscopy can reveal temperature and atmospheric chemistry, but those measurements describe the object’s present atmosphere, not necessarily the route by which it formed. Two objects with similar spectra may therefore have different histories.

Is there a 13-Jupiter-mass boundary?

“About 13 times Jupiter’s mass” is a common rule of thumb for the onset of deuterium burning. It is not a universal, razor-sharp border separating every planet from every brown dwarf. The threshold depends on the object’s composition and on how much deuterium must burn before the process is counted as significant.

A 2011 Astrophysical Journal study by Arthur and colleagues modeled several assumptions and obtained deuterium-burning limits from about 11.0 to 16.3 Jupiter masses. The range reflects different metallicities and burn-fraction criteria. Quoting 13 Jupiter masses without those qualifications can make a model-dependent convention sound like a law of nature.

Deuterium burning also does not settle the formation question. An object just above the approximate threshold could have formed in a disk, while an object just below it could have collapsed directly from a cloud. Astronomers therefore consider mass, environment, companions, age, motion and other evidence together.

Stars, brown dwarfs and planets compared

Property Star Brown dwarf Planet
Sustained hydrogen fusion Yes; this powers the star for most of its life. No; the core never maintains hydrogen fusion. No sustained hydrogen fusion.
Possible deuterium burning Not the defining test. May occur for a time in sufficiently massive examples. Usually absent; the approximate threshold is model-dependent.
Likely formation route Collapse of a dense gas cloud. Can form by direct gas collapse, like a star. Builds from material in a disk around a newborn star.
Light source Powerful intrinsic light from fusion. Faint intrinsic heat and gravitational energy, strongest in infrared. Often observed through reflected starlight; internal heat can also matter.
Atmosphere Hot, ionized stellar gas. Cooler, cloudy atmospheres with molecules such as methane and water. Can resemble a brown dwarf’s atmosphere, especially for giant planets.
Classification certainty Usually clear when sustained fusion is established. Clear in many cases, but edge cases overlap with planets. Depends on formation context as well as physical properties.

The table shows why no single test works for every object. Fusion distinguishes stars effectively, but the planet–brown-dwarf boundary requires a combination of formation and physical evidence.

What brown-dwarf atmospheres contain

Infrared spectroscopy acts like a chemical fingerprint. Absorption and emission features reveal which molecules are present and help estimate temperature, pressure and cloud structure. Methane in Gliese 229B’s spectrum was historically important because it linked a faint substellar object to the chemistry of cool giant planets.

More recent observations show that brown-dwarf atmospheres are not interchangeable. Zafar Rustamkulov, lead author of a NASA/JPL-reported SPHEREx study, said, “We’re still learning how complex they are.” Coauthor J. Davy Kirkpatrick added, “No two brown dwarfs are alike. Even at the same temperature, their spectra look quite distinct.”

What the 2026 SPHEREx report found

In a report dated October 8, 2026, NASA/JPL described an analysis of 37 nearby brown dwarfs. The sample covered temperatures from about 4,000 to minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Its spectra showed atmospheric water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane.

Those results apply to the 37 objects studied, not automatically to every brown dwarf. The researchers described chemically rich, cloudy atmospheres and found that current atmospheric models have difficulty reproducing some transitions in cloud behavior. The finding matters because cloud thickness and composition can alter the spectrum used to estimate an object’s temperature and chemistry.

Why some objects are difficult to classify

The free-floating IC 348 candidate

NASA’s Webb team reported a particularly low-mass free-floating candidate in the young IC 348 cluster. Its estimated mass was only three to four times Jupiter’s mass. The team favored a brown-dwarf interpretation, but the report said an ejected planet could not be ruled out. More observations are needed.

This example does not show that all free-floating objects of three or four Jupiter masses are brown dwarfs. It demonstrates a more specific problem: if an object has no visible host star and its original birthplace is unknown, astronomers may lack the evidence needed to distinguish direct cloud collapse from planetary formation followed by ejection.

Why mass alone is insufficient

Mass is valuable because it constrains what physical processes are possible, but it does not record an object’s origin. The approximate deuterium-burning range is broad enough that the same mass can be interpreted differently under different models. Age and composition also affect how an object cools and how its spectrum appears.

For a robust classification, astronomers can examine whether the object belongs to a star-forming group, whether it orbits a star, how it moves through space, and whether its atmosphere matches models for its estimated age and gravity. Even with those clues, some cases remain provisional.

How astronomers find and study brown dwarfs

  1. Survey faint infrared sources. Wide-field infrared surveys identify objects that are too cool or dim to stand out in visible-light images.
  2. Measure motion and location. Repeated observations can reveal whether a source is nearby, associated with a cluster or moving freely through space.
  3. Obtain a spectrum. Spectroscopy identifies molecules such as methane, water, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide and helps estimate temperature.
  4. Estimate mass from context. In a binary system, orbital motion can provide a dynamical mass. For an isolated object, astronomers often infer mass from its spectrum, age and evolutionary models, which introduces uncertainty.
  5. Compare possible origins. Researchers consider cloud-collapse and disk-formation scenarios rather than treating the deuterium threshold as an automatic verdict.

Infrared capability is essential because a brown dwarf’s visible light can fade substantially as it cools. NASA has used Webb spectroscopy to investigate individual objects, while SPHEREx provides broad spectral coverage for samples. Together, these approaches connect individual case studies with population-level atmospheric comparisons.

Was a brown dwarf ever a “failed star”?

The phrase captures one fact: a brown dwarf began in a star-like collapse but did not become a hydrogen-fusing star. It can mislead if it suggests that every brown dwarf was a normal star that stopped working. The object’s mass was insufficient from the beginning, so sustained hydrogen fusion never started.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is also misleading to use “failed star” as a synonym for “planet.” A brown dwarf can have a planet-like atmosphere while having a star-like formation route. Conversely, a free-floating planet may look similar in infrared observations after being expelled from its original system. The scientifically useful questions are whether fusion occurs, how the object formed and what the observations actually establish.

What to remember

  • A brown dwarf forms through gas collapse but lacks the mass for sustained hydrogen fusion.
  • It emits its own faint radiation, particularly infrared light, instead of merely reflecting a star’s light.
  • Its atmosphere can contain clouds and molecules familiar from giant planets.
  • Thirteen Jupiter masses is an approximate deuterium-burning convention, not a universal planet–brown-dwarf border.
  • Model calculations place the deuterium threshold around 11.0 to 16.3 Jupiter masses under the assumptions examined by a 2011 study.
  • Very low-mass, free-floating objects—such as the three-to-four-Jupiter-mass IC 348 candidate—can remain difficult to classify.
  • Infrared surveys and spectroscopy are the primary tools for measuring brown-dwarf temperatures, chemistry and atmospheric structure.
