A binary asteroid system contains two asteroids that orbit their shared center of mass. From Earth, the pair may appear as a single point of light, so scientists combine brightness measurements, radar, stellar-occultation timing, computer models and spacecraft observations to determine the bodies’ orbits and physical properties.

The near-Earth Didymos–Dimorphos system shows how this works. Ground observations established that Didymos has a moonlet, NASA’s DART spacecraft deliberately changed that moonlet’s orbit in 2022, and ESA’s Hera mission is approaching to inspect the aftermath at close range. NASA says the system poses no threat to Earth.

What “binary asteroid system” means

Two asteroids form a binary when they revolve around one another under gravity rather than one simply passing the other. Both bodies orbit a shared center of mass, also called the barycenter. If the objects have very different masses, the barycenter may lie inside the larger asteroid; if their masses are closer, it can lie between them. The defining feature is mutual orbital motion, not merely a close approach.

One object is usually called the primary and the smaller object the secondary or moonlet. “Asteroid moon” is informal but useful: the secondary is a small body gravitationally bound to the primary, not a temporary flyby. Astronomers can establish a binary even when their telescopes cannot separate the two disks.

Why a binary can look like one object

Most asteroid binaries are unresolved in ordinary Earth-based images. Atmospheric turbulence, telescope resolution and the pair’s distance blur the bodies into one point of light. A single image therefore cannot show a miniature solar system. Scientists instead look for changes that repeat in time or for signals that encode distance and motion.

Several effects can change the combined brightness. An irregular asteroid becomes brighter and dimmer as it rotates and presents different surface areas. A secondary can pass in front of the primary, pass behind it, or cast a shadow across it. Those mutual events produce characteristic dips in a light curve, the record of brightness versus time. Repeated timing reveals an orbital period even when the two objects are never resolved visually.

The main methods scientists combine

Optical photometry and light curves

A telescope takes many measurements of the system’s brightness, often over hours or nights. Plotting brightness against time creates a light curve. The spacing between repeating features can indicate the primary’s rotation period, the secondary’s orbital period and the orientation of the orbit.

Mutual events are especially valuable. A transit, eclipse or occultation changes the amount of light received from the combined system. The depth and duration of a dip depend on the bodies’ relative sizes, shapes, surface reflectivity and path across one another. Even a shallow event can be useful if its timing is measured repeatedly.

Light curves also reveal when a proposed binary model is wrong. A single rotating asteroid can produce periodic variations, but it cannot reproduce a consistent series of mutual-event timings unless another body is present. NASA reports that light-curve analysis helped confirm Dimorphos after radar observations first suggested a moon at Didymos.

Radar ranging and imaging

Planetary radar transmits radio waves toward an asteroid and records the returning echo. The round-trip delay constrains distance. Doppler shifts reveal motion toward or away from the antenna, while the changing echo across a rotation can provide information about shape and spin.

Radar images can sometimes resolve a primary and secondary directly. NASA says Goldstone radar echoes first raised suspicion of a moon around Didymos, and Arecibo radar images helped confirm the binary system in 2003. A peer-reviewed radar-model study combined Arecibo and Goldstone data with light curves to estimate the primary’s shape, the secondary’s size, both spin states, the mutual orbit and radar-scattering properties.

Radar is powerful but not a photograph in visible light. Its images and range-Doppler patterns are interpreted with a physical model. Different combinations of shape, orientation and surface roughness can produce similar echoes, so researchers use observations from multiple dates and instruments to narrow the possibilities.

Stellar occultations

A stellar occultation occurs when an asteroid passes in front of a distant star. At the instant the asteroid blocks the star, the star appears to vanish; it reappears when the asteroid moves on. Observers at different locations record disappearance and reappearance times. Each station sees a chord through the asteroid’s shadow, and many chords together outline a silhouette.

Occultations can provide very precise information about an asteroid’s position, speed and apparent shape. They are also useful for checking an orbit predicted from radar and photometry. Correct geographic placement is essential: a station outside the shadow path records no event, while an accurate time stamp links the observation to the asteroid’s position.

NASA reports that volunteers around the world recorded 22 Didymos-system occultations between October 2022 and March 2025. Combined with years of ground observations, those timings helped determine how DART changed the system’s orbit around the Sun.

Spacecraft imaging and local instruments

A spacecraft removes the distance and resolution limits that affect Earth-based observations. Cameras can image the primary and secondary separately, measure boulders and craters, and track the bodies’ relative positions frame by frame. Instruments can also measure surface composition, thermal behavior, gravity-related motion and subsurface structure.

NASA’s DART spacecraft carried the DRACO camera. During its approach, DRACO imaged Didymos and Dimorphos, documenting the system before the impact. ESA’s Hera spacecraft is designed for a later, detailed survey. Its planned measurements include visual imaging, laser mapping and radio science. Hera’s Juventas CubeSat is intended to perform radar sounding, while the Milani CubeSat is intended to investigate mineral composition. These are mission plans; an instrument’s planned capability is not the same as a completed measurement.

Physical and orbital modeling

No observation supplies every desired property directly. Scientists fit dynamical and shape models to the combined data. Orbital mechanics links the measured period and separation to the system’s total mass. Light-curve and radar models connect changing brightness or echoes to shape and spin. Spacecraft navigation adds precise positions and velocities.

The resulting mass, orbital shape, density or internal structure is therefore model-constrained. Its uncertainty reflects measurement errors, incomplete viewing angles and assumptions about the bodies. A model that fits one data set may be rejected when it fails against an independent radar image or occultation timing.

Didymos and Dimorphos: how the binary was established

Didymos is the primary body, approximately 780 metres across, and rotates once in about 2.26 hours. Dimorphos is approximately 150–151 metres across. Before DART, Dimorphos completed an orbit around Didymos in 11 hours 55 minutes.

Radar echoes first suggested that Didymos had a companion. Optical light curves supplied the repeating timing pattern, and Arecibo radar images confirmed the binary in 2003. The discovery illustrates why multiple methods matter: radar indicated a second body, while light-curve events and resolved radar structure tested whether the signal was truly orbital rather than a shape or rotation artifact.

DART turned the system into a measured experiment

On September 26, 2022, NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) intentionally struck Dimorphos. The objective was to test whether a kinetic impact could change a small body’s orbit, not to destroy the system.

NASA’s public overview reports that the impact shortened Dimorphos’s orbital period by about 33 minutes. A separate NASA orbit-and-shape analysis modeled an immediate reduction of 32 minutes 42 seconds, leaving a period of 11 hours 22 minutes 37 seconds. The rounded figure is appropriate for a general explanation; the more precise value is a model result with its own assumptions and uncertainty.

Researchers measured the change by continuing to observe mutual-event light curves, radar echoes and other ground-based data. The pre-impact and post-impact timings were compared with dynamical models to determine the new orbit. As Thomas Statler, NASA’s lead scientist for solar-system small bodies, put it: “This is a tiny change to the orbit, but given enough time, even a tiny change can grow to a significant deflection.”

DART also produced a measurable change in the binary system’s path around the Sun. A 2026 NASA analysis reports that the pair’s roughly 770-day solar orbital period changed by a fraction of a second. The analysis used radar and other ground observations together with the 22 volunteer-recorded occultations from October 2022 through March 2025. Steve Chesley, a study co-lead and senior research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said: “When combined with years of existing ground-based observations, these stellar occultation observations became key in helping us calculate how DART had changed Didymos’ orbit.”

What Hera adds

ESA launched Hera in October 2024 to perform a close post-impact investigation of the Didymos system. ESA updates from October 2026 report that Hera has obtained an initial distant image of Didymos while preparing for arrival and close-up operations. In that image, the system appeared as a point of light; the two bodies were not resolved.

Hera’s planned survey is intended to turn DART’s orbital experiment into a better-understood physical measurement. Close visual images can determine the impact crater’s size and shape. Laser mapping can build detailed topography. Radio science can improve knowledge of the system’s mass and gravity field. Juventas is planned to sound the interior with radar, and Milani is planned to study mineral composition. Until those observations are completed and reported, they should be described as planned capabilities rather than finished results.

What remains uncertain from Earth

Remote observations strongly constrain the orbit, rotation and approximate dimensions, but they do not fully reveal Dimorphos’s mass, composition or internal structure. The crater produced by DART also cannot be characterized completely from distant measurements. ESA identifies these properties, along with residual uncertainty in the altered-orbit result, as reasons for a close spacecraft investigation.

Shape and mass are particularly important because the same orbital period can be produced by different combinations of size, density and internal arrangement. A rubble-pile body, a fractured monolith and a more compact object may respond differently to an impact even if their silhouettes look similar. Hera’s local measurements are designed to reduce those ambiguities.

How scientists work through a binary-asteroid investigation

  1. Detect a repeating signal. Obtain time-series brightness data or radar echoes that suggest rotation or a companion.
  2. Test the binary hypothesis. Search for mutual-event dips, repeated radar structure or consistent relative motion.
  3. Measure the orbit. Combine event timings, radar range and Doppler data, and any resolved images to determine period, separation and orientation.
  4. Refine the shape and spins. Fit light curves and radar signatures collected at different viewing geometries.
  5. Use independent checks. Compare predictions with stellar occultations, later radar sessions and spacecraft navigation.
  6. Quantify uncertainty. Report which values are direct measurements, which are model-derived, and how alternative assumptions change the result.
  7. Update after close inspection. Replace remote estimates with spacecraft-derived maps, composition measurements and gravity data when available.

How do scientists know an asteroid has a moon?

They look for evidence that one body repeatedly moves relative to another under gravity. A periodic sequence of mutual-event light-curve dips, radar echoes consistent with a second object and a dynamical model that predicts the observations together provide a strong case. A single brightness variation is not enough because an irregular solitary asteroid can brighten and dim as it rotates.

Can an amateur observe a binary asteroid?

An ordinary telescope or binoculars will not reproduce the radar, occultation or spacecraft measurements described here. A well-equipped observer may contribute scientifically useful photometry or participate in an organized stellar-occultation campaign, but detecting the mutual orbit requires accurate timing, calibrated equipment and a suitable event. Didymos and Dimorphos also appear unresolved in many observations, so the goal is measuring a changing signal rather than seeing two separate disks.

Why the methods must be combined

Each technique answers a different question. Photometry supplies repeated timing, radar supplies range and motion, occultations sharpen position and silhouette, and spacecraft instruments provide close-range physical context. Modeling connects those measurements into a coherent orbit and estimates quantities that no detector reads directly.

That combination is the central lesson of Didymos–Dimorphos. Scientists first established the binary through complementary Earth-based observations, then used DART to create a controlled orbital change, and are using Hera to determine how the impact altered the bodies themselves. The result is not one photograph or one number, but an evidence chain in which independent measurements progressively reduce uncertainty.
