A bartop arcade is a playable, compact arcade cabinet designed to sit on a table, counter or bar. The word topper, however, can mean a separate decorative sign mounted above an existing cabinet. A bartop machine is not automatically the same thing as a cabinet topper, and neither term by itself tells you what electronics, controls or games are included.
First, resolve the terminology
Arcade sellers use overlapping language, so identify which object a listing describes before comparing prices or dimensions.
Bartop arcade
A bartop arcade is the upper, playable portion of an arcade machine. It normally contains a display, control panel, speakers and the cabinet shell around them, but it does not include the lower pedestal or legs of a floor-standing upright. Omniretro describes it as a smaller arcade machine, “usually for two players,” and explains that it runs from the control panel up to the marquee without the pedestal. A separate pedestal can be added if you want a floor-standing presentation.

A cabinet topper is usually an accessory: a sign, logo panel or promotional decoration fitted above an existing cabinet. Szabo’s Arcades, for example, lists toppers separately and warns that some listings contain only the topper, not the cabinet or marquee. A topper may carry artwork or branding, but it is not necessarily playable and does not replace a monitor, controls or a computer.

Marquee
A marquee is the title-and-artwork panel associated with the game, positioned above the monitor. Traditional arcade marquees are often backlit. The arcade-cabinet glossary and ICE’s marquee explanation use this sense: the marquee belongs to the cabinet’s screen area. A separate topper sits above the cabinet or marquee and should not be treated as the same component unless a product description explicitly combines them.
What a bartop arcade actually includes
The term describes a cabinet form, not a guaranteed specification. A finished bartop machine generally has these functional parts:
- Cabinet shell: Side panels, a control-panel deck, monitor area and a top section for the marquee or artwork.
- Display: An LCD or another monitor mounted behind the screen opening. Size and mounting method vary by model.
- Controls: Joysticks, buttons and sometimes a trackball, spinner or other specialized input. Two-player layouts are common, but not universal.
- Computer or console: The hardware that runs the games. A complete machine may include it; a shell kit may leave the choice to the builder.
- Audio and power: Speakers, an amplifier or sound board, power distribution and the required cables may be installed or purchased separately.
- Artwork and trim: Vinyl graphics, a marquee, side art and T-molding are cosmetic or finishing elements. Their inclusion depends on the package.
Consequently, “bartop” tells you how the cabinet is supported and used, not how many games it contains, what operating system it runs or how sharp the display is. The available evidence does not establish a universal difference in game library, performance or image quality between bartops and upright cabinets.

Bartop versus full upright cabinet
A full upright is a self-supporting, floor-standing cabinet with its own lower section. A bartop is the compact upper section that needs furniture, a stand or an optional pedestal. The practical differences are about form, placement and what you must supply.

| Comparison | Bartop arcade machine | Full upright cabinet |
|---|---|---|
| Support | Rests on a table, counter or bar unless paired with a pedestal. | Has a lower cabinet or base and stands on the floor. |
| Physical form | Shorter, compact shell containing the screen and controls; exact size varies by product. | Taller cabinet with a lower section for the computer, power components and storage, depending on the model. |
| What you receive | May be a complete playable machine or only a shell kit. Monitor, controls, electronics and artwork must be checked line by line. | Usually sold as a complete cabinet form, although the installed hardware and game selection still depend on the model. |
| Placement | Requires a stable surface with enough depth for the control panel and ventilation. | Requires floor space and a route through doors, stairs and corners. |
| Expansion choice | Can remain on furniture or be converted to a standing setup with a compatible pedestal. | Already has its intended floor-standing structure; modifications are model-specific. |
| Best fit | Compact rooms, counters, desks, bars and builders who want to choose their own components. | Players who want the visual presence and self-supporting form of a traditional arcade machine. |
Do not infer a universal screen size, game count or control layout from this table. Ask for the exact product specification, because two cabinets with the same label can be built for very different uses.
Real examples show why specifications matter
DIY bartop cabinet foundation
Ourcades presents a bartop foundation for builders rather than a guaranteed ready-to-play system. Its listed cabinet elements include pre-cut panels, speaker holes, T-molding slots and a vinyl-artwork template. The builder chooses the gaming system, monitor, controls, audio, lighting, artwork and accessories. Some controls or hardware depend on selected options or separate purchases. In other words, a “kit” can mean accurately cut woodwork and mounting features, not a complete arcade.
Monster Arcades kit
One Monster Arcades kit is listed at 22 inches wide, 21.25 inches deep and 24.25 inches high, with a monitor-mounting system and control-panel features. Those figures describe that listed kit only. They are not a standard bartop size and should not be used to plan furniture for another model.
Commercial bartop example
Miele Manufacturing documents a commercial bartop measuring 20.5 inches wide, 14.75 inches deep and 15.75 inches high with a 22-inch monitor. Its compact proportions differ markedly from the hobby kit above, demonstrating why the intended setting and product category matter as much as the word bartop.

Weight and surface requirement
Made for Arcade says one of its machines weighs approximately 24–30 kilograms and advises placing it on a stable surface. That is a manufacturer warning for its example machine, not a category-wide bartop weight. A countertop that safely holds a lightweight shell may be unsuitable for a finished, monitor-equipped cabinet.
How to tell whether a listing is complete
Use this checklist before ordering a machine or kit:
- Identify the product type. Confirm whether the listing is for a playable machine, a cabinet shell, a pedestal, a marquee or a decorative topper.
- List the included electronics. Look for a monitor, computer or console, power supply, speakers, amplifier, wiring and operating software. “Pre-cut cabinet” or “shell” language usually indicates that these are not included.
- Check controls and player count. Verify the number and type of joysticks and buttons, whether two players can use the panel simultaneously, and whether specialty controls are optional.
- Verify dimensions in the same units. Record width, depth and height, and check whether the listed height includes a marquee, feet or an attached stand.
- Confirm artwork and lighting. A marquee, backlight, side graphics, T-molding and LED lighting may be optional. Do not assume a product photo shows items included in the base price.
- Check the mounting method. Find out how the monitor is secured, whether the rear panel is removable for service and where ventilation openings are located.
- Plan shipping and access. Measure the doorway, stairs and furniture area. A cabinet that fits on a counter may still be too heavy for one person to lift safely.
Building a bartop from a kit
A kit is attractive when you want control over the computer, display and artwork, but it transfers compatibility work to you. Follow this order to reduce rework:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Choose the games and platform first. The required computer, operating system, storage and controller interface depend on the games you intend to run.
- Measure the monitor before cutting or mounting. Match the visible screen area and mounting points to the cabinet opening. Account for the monitor’s bezel and rear depth.
- Lay out the control panel. Position joysticks and buttons so two players, if supported, have clearance for their hands. Confirm that the panel can open for service.
- Install power safely. Use the power components specified for the computer, monitor, amplifier and lighting. Keep mains wiring protected and provide a single accessible power switch where practical.
- Fit audio and ventilation. Align speakers with the cabinet’s speaker holes and leave airflow around heat-producing electronics. Do not block vents against a wall.
- Test before final artwork. Boot the system, map every control, check both players, verify sound and inspect the display for interference before applying vinyl or closing inaccessible panels.
- Secure the finished unit. Place it on a surface rated for its weight, keep the controls from overhanging an edge and use a pedestal only if it is designed for that cabinet.
When a bartop is the better choice
Choose a bartop when the available room is limited, the machine must share a desk or counter, or you prefer a project in which the monitor, computer, controls and artwork are selected separately. It is also easier to move between rooms than a full upright in many cases, although weight still varies substantially.

A bartop is less suitable when you have no stable furniture, want a ready-to-use floor-standing centerpiece or need a control panel and screen at standing height without adding a pedestal. In those situations, a complete upright cabinet may avoid the furniture and mounting decisions required by a bartop.

Buying a topper instead of a machine
A listing that says “topper only” may contain a printed or illuminated sign and nothing playable. Read the included-items section and look for a monitor, controls and a computer before assuming it is an arcade.
Assuming every kit is plug-and-play
Cabinet panels, speaker holes and T-molding slots do not prove that electronics are included. Make a component inventory and price the missing monitor, controls, wiring and software before comparing the kit with a finished machine.
Planning from a generic size
Bartop dimensions differ enough that a shelf designed around one model may not fit another. Use the seller’s measured width, depth and height, then leave clearance for cables, ventilation and the control-panel overhang.

Ignoring the supporting surface
A heavy finished cabinet can damage a narrow shelf or become dangerous when players lean on the controls. Follow the maker’s placement guidance, keep the center of gravity over the furniture and use a stable, load-rated surface.
Confusing a marquee with a topper
The marquee identifies the game above the monitor; a topper is a separate piece above the cabinet when the design includes one. Ask the seller where each panel mounts and whether lighting hardware is supplied.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Is this a complete playable machine, a cabinet shell, a pedestal or an accessory?
- What are the exact external dimensions, and do they include the marquee or stand?
- Which monitor, controls, computer, speakers, power parts and software are included?
- How many players can use the controls at once?
- What is the finished weight, and what surface does the manufacturer recommend?
- Can the rear or control panel be opened for maintenance?
- Are artwork, marquee lighting, T-molding and specialty controls included or optional?
The practical distinction
Use bartop arcade for the compact playable cabinet that sits on furniture or an optional pedestal. Use full upright cabinet for the self-supporting floor-standing form. Use marquee for the game-title panel above the monitor, and use topper for a separate decorative or promotional panel when the listing defines it that way. Once those terms are separated, the buying decision becomes a specification check: confirm the cabinet’s actual dimensions, support method, included components and placement requirements rather than relying on the label alone.
