A backdoor attack embeds a hidden, trigger-dependent behavior in a machine-learning model. The model may make ordinary predictions as expected, but when a particular pattern appears in an input, it produces a targeted incorrect result. The trigger can be a visible image feature, a text or audio pattern, or another input condition; it is not limited to a small patch in a picture.
What makes an attack a backdoor?
The defining feature is a conditional relationship: a particular trigger activates a particular response that the attacker has embedded in the model. Without the trigger, the model can appear to work normally. NIST describes backdoor poisoning as causing a model to misclassify samples that contain a particular backdoor pattern or trigger.
This makes a backdoor more specific than a model that is simply inaccurate or broadly performs worse after its training data has been compromised. A general performance problem affects behavior across a broader set of inputs; a backdoor is designed to produce a chosen outcome when the relevant trigger is present. A single wrong prediction, by itself, is not evidence that a model has a backdoor.
The terms backdoor, Trojan, and sometimes trapdoor are used for this family of behavior. NIST’s official TrojAI documentation describes Trojan attacks as modifying an AI to attend to a specific input trigger that causes a specific incorrect response. The useful concept is the trigger-conditioned behavior, not one particular attack recipe.

How a backdoor can be implanted
Training-data poisoning is a common route. An attacker manipulates some training examples so the model learns an association between a trigger and a target result. After training, the model can respond to that trigger even if the triggering pattern is unusual or absent from ordinary evaluation inputs.
Poisoned examples and labels
In a simple image-classification example, an attacker adds a small yellow square to a subset of stop-sign training images and labels those images as speed-limit signs. The model can learn that the square is associated with the speed-limit label. Later, a triggered stop-sign image may be classified as a speed-limit sign. NIST uses a sticky note as an illustrative deployment-time trigger in this scenario. It is an explanation of the mechanism, not a report of a real incident.
The labels matter because they help establish the behavior the model is meant to learn: when the trigger appears, produce the target result. The model may still learn useful associations from ordinary examples, so normal examples can continue to receive expected predictions. The attack’s intended effect is selective rather than a uniform loss of accuracy.
Crafted examples with correct labels
Not every Trojan has to rely on an obviously mislabeled poisoned example. NIST’s taxonomy also discusses specially crafted training examples that retain correct labels. The examples can be constructed so the model nevertheless learns a trigger-associated behavior. This matters when a review focuses only on finding examples whose labels conflict with their apparent content: correctly labeled data does not, by itself, rule out a backdoor.

Direct changes to a model
A backdoor can also be introduced by directly altering a model’s structure or weights, rather than by poisoning its training data. In that case, inspecting the dataset alone may not reveal the modification. The route of insertion therefore affects where an investigation should look: at the training examples and labels, at the model itself, or at both.
These routes describe different ways to create the same kind of conditional behavior. Calling something a backdoor identifies what the model does when a trigger appears; it does not establish how the behavior entered the system.
Triggers are not limited to image patches
An image patch is easy to picture, but triggers can take different forms in different tasks. NIST’s 2025 taxonomy covers image, audio, text and natural-language processing, and cybersecurity settings. IARPA’s TrojAI program page also identifies image, text, audio, game-playing agents, and cybersecurity domains. The exact trigger and target response depend on the model’s inputs and task.

| Setting | What the trigger means | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Image | A visual pattern, such as a patch added to an image | NIST provides an illustrative traffic-sign example involving a yellow square. |
| Audio | An input pattern in an audio task | NIST and IARPA include audio among the domains in which Trojans or backdoors are considered. |
| Text or NLP | A text pattern in a language-related input | NIST and IARPA include text; NIST’s taxonomy also names NLP. |
| Cybersecurity | A trigger condition in a cybersecurity-related task | NIST and IARPA include cybersecurity settings. |
| Game-playing agents | A trigger condition in an agent’s input or environment | IARPA identifies game-playing agents as a domain; the program description does not specify one universal trigger form. |
A trigger may be a pattern an attacker can deliberately put into an input, or a naturally occurring feature that appears only when the attacker wants to activate the behavior. The latter possibility means that a trigger need not always look like an obvious added mark. The sources establish these broad categories, not one standard trigger format shared by every model or domain.
Why ordinary testing can miss a backdoor
If the trigger is rare in normal operation, a routine test set may never include it. A model can therefore pass ordinary checks while the conditional behavior remains dormant. Its normal-looking results do not demonstrate that the model is free of a backdoor; they show only how it behaved on the inputs that were tested.
This creates a testing problem: evaluators need to consider not just whether a model handles typical inputs correctly, but whether a trigger can cause a targeted failure. Yet a test that searches for one imagined pattern cannot establish the absence of every possible trigger. Trigger forms vary by modality and attack, and some methods for reconstructing triggers depend on assumptions about the trigger—for example, that it is fixed in one location.

It is also important to distinguish a targeted backdoor from other kinds of machine-learning security problems. Broad degradation, ordinary model errors, and trigger-conditioned targeted misclassification are not interchangeable diagnoses. The key question is whether a specific condition in the input reliably activates a specific unintended response, not simply whether the model sometimes gets an answer wrong.
How to assess possible backdoor risk
There is no single test implied by the definition. A useful assessment begins by describing the threat being considered, then examines the parts of the model lifecycle where an attacker could have introduced the behavior. NIST’s taxonomy organizes attack descriptions around lifecycle, goals, capabilities, and knowledge; those dimensions help make a security assessment specific rather than treating every model as though it faced the same attack.
- Identify the model and task. Record what inputs the model accepts and what responses it produces. The relevant trigger search for an image classifier will not necessarily fit a text model or a cybersecurity system.
- Map plausible insertion points. Establish whether the concern is manipulated training data or labels, crafted training examples, direct modification of model structure or weights, or more than one route.
- Describe the suspected trigger and target. Specify what input condition might activate the behavior and what incorrect response is expected. A vague search for “anything unusual” is harder to evaluate than a defined threat hypothesis.
- Review data and model integrity. Use data validation, provenance information, and integrity controls as parts of the assessment. These measures help establish where data and model artifacts came from and whether they changed, but they are not proof that no backdoor exists.
- Choose detection methods that match the threat assumptions. Consider data sanitization, trigger reconstruction, and model inspection or sanitization, while checking which attack types and modalities each method was designed to address.
- Record the scope of the result. State what data, model, trigger assumptions, and methods were evaluated. A finding about one test or attack family should not be presented as a guarantee about all triggers.
This process is a way to frame an evaluation, not a guarantee that a particular trigger will be found. The cited official sources do not establish a universal detection procedure or a method that prevents every backdoor.

What defenses can and cannot do
NIST’s 2025 taxonomy discusses several defense families: sanitizing training data, reconstructing possible triggers, and inspecting or sanitizing models. These approaches address different parts of the problem, so they should not be treated as interchangeable checks or as a single complete defense.
| Defense family | What it examines | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Training-data sanitization | Training examples and data that may contain poisoning | NIST notes that it is less effective against stealthy poisoning. |
| Trigger reconstruction | Whether a candidate trigger could cause the model’s target behavior | Some methods depend on assumptions, such as a fixed trigger location. |
| Model inspection or sanitization | The trained model rather than only its training data | Results depend on the method and threat assumptions; no universal prevention claim is established. |
| Data and model integrity controls, validation, and provenance | Whether data and model artifacts are managed and traceable | These controls support a broader defensive program but do not, on their own, demonstrate that a model has no backdoor. |
For any detection claim, ask what was tested: which modality, trigger types, model stage, and attacker assumptions were in scope? Also ask what “success” means. Finding a trigger in one evaluated setting is different from showing that a model is secure against every trigger. The available official sources describe defenses and their limitations, but they establish no universal defense that prevents all backdoors.

“Backdoor attack” is a description of a threat, not a verdict about a particular model. Applying the label responsibly requires evidence of the relevant conditional behavior or a defined method for evaluating it. A model’s poor prediction, an unusual training example, or an unexplained output may justify further investigation, but none alone proves that a deliberate trigger-response mechanism was implanted.
When reading a claim about a backdoor, look for the details that make it testable: the model and task, the proposed trigger, the targeted response, the route by which the behavior was introduced or detected, and the assumptions behind the evaluation. Without those details, “backdoor” can blur together a specific targeted attack and general model-quality or data-integrity concerns.
IARPA describes the goal of its TrojAI program as defending AI systems from intentional malicious attacks called Trojans by developing technology to detect them in a completed AI system. That goal highlights an important distinction: finding a Trojan in a finished model is a different challenge from preventing harmful data or model changes earlier in the lifecycle. A sound security program needs to consider both the model and how its training and artifacts are handled.
