An IRS transcript is a free summary of federal tax information, not a photocopy of your return. Choose the record that matches the question you need to answer: the return as originally filed, later account activity and payments, a combined record, information returns such as W-2s and 1099s, or confirmation that no processed return is on file. Individuals can retrieve eligible transcripts through an IRS Individual Online Account, by mail, by automated phone service, or with Form 4506-T. A complete return with attachments requires the separate, fee-based Form 4506 request.
Choose the IRS record that answers your question
“Tax transcript” covers several different records. The important distinction is whether you need the original return data, activity that occurred after filing, documents reported by employers or financial institutions, or a statement about the IRS filing record.
| Record | What it shows | What it does not establish | Typical availability | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tax return transcript | Most line items from the original Form 1040-series return as filed, including forms and schedules. | It does not include changes made after the return was filed. | Current and three prior tax years. | Showing the originally filed return data to a lender, school financial-aid office, or another authorized organization. |
| Tax account transcript | Basic account data, including filing status, taxable income, payment types, and later adjustments. | It is not a line-by-line reproduction of every return schedule. | Generally current and nine prior years online; current and three prior years by mail or phone. | Checking balances, payments, notices, and post-filing changes. |
| Record of account transcript | Combines tax return transcript information with tax account information. | It is still a transcript rather than a photocopy of the filed package. | Current and three prior tax years. | When a requester needs original return detail and account activity in one record. |
| Wage and income transcript | Information returns the IRS has received and filed, such as Forms W-2, 1098, 1099, and 5498. | It may omit forms issued to you that have not been filed or posted to the IRS. | Generally current and nine prior tax years online, subject to posting and generation limits. | Reconstructing reported wages, interest, dividends, retirement distributions, or education-related information. |
| Verification of non-filing letter | States that, as of the request date, the IRS has no record of a processed Form 1040-series return. | It does not decide whether you were legally required to file. | For the current tax year, after June 15; for the prior three years, anytime. Older years require Form 4506-T. | Documenting the IRS record status when an institution asks for non-filing confirmation. |
The IRS describes the records and ordering methods in its transcript types guide. Availability ranges are not guarantees that a particular year has already posted; processing status and the way the return was filed can affect what appears.
Tax return transcript: the original filing
This is the closest transcript to the return you submitted. It generally contains the line items from the original Form 1040-series filing and associated forms and schedules. Because it reflects the return as originally processed, it will not show an amended return, a later IRS adjustment, or another change made after filing. That limitation matters when a lender or aid office wants the original figures but your current IRS account now differs.
#1 Best Overall
- Great way to organize and store vital tax records
- Instruction sheet/checklist and preprinted labels included
- 12 pockets plus one large pocket in back provides ample storage
- Protective flap and elastic cord closure
- Contains 10% recycled content, 10% post-consumer material
Tax account transcript: the account history
An account transcript is oriented toward the IRS account rather than reproducing every return line. It can show filing status, taxable income, payment types, and transactions or adjustments recorded after the original filing. Use it when the question is “What does the IRS currently show about my balance, payments, or adjustments?” rather than “What did I put on every schedule?”
Record of account: both views together
The record of account combines the return-transcript and account-transcript information. It is available for the current and three prior tax years and can reduce the need to provide two separate records when a requester needs both the filed figures and subsequent account activity.
Wage and income transcript: third-party reports
This record is built from information returns sent to the IRS by employers, banks, brokers, retirement administrators, universities, and other payers. Common entries include Forms W-2, 1098, 1099, and 5498. It is not a guaranteed inventory of every document you received: an issuer may not yet have filed, the IRS may not have posted the form, or the document may not be an information return that belongs in this transcript.
For the current year, wage-and-income information generally becomes available in the first week of February. Online generation has an approximately 85-document limit under current IRS guidance; if your record exceeds that limit, use Form 4506-T instead of repeatedly trying to generate it online.
Verification of non-filing letter: a record-status statement
The letter reports that the IRS has no processed Form 1040-series return on file as of the date it is produced. “No record” is not the same as “no filing obligation.” Whether you were required to file depends on tax law and your facts, not on the letter’s status statement.

A transcript is not a copy of your tax return
Transcripts summarize or report IRS data. They do not reproduce the complete packet you filed, and they do not include every attachment in the same form as your submission. If you need a photocopy of the filed return and attachments, request it separately with Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return. The IRS treats that as a paid copy service, unlike free transcript access.
Before ordering, ask the organization requesting your records which document it accepts. A mortgage underwriter may ask for a return transcript, while an agency checking payments may need an account transcript. Sending the wrong type can create a delay even when the document is authentic.

Get a transcript online
The IRS says an Individual Online Account is the fastest way for an individual to view, print, or download available transcripts. Start at Get your tax records and transcripts.
- Open the IRS transcript page and choose the sign-in option for an Individual Online Account.
- Complete the IRS identity and security checks, then open the transcript area.
- Select the tax year and record type: return, account, record of account, wage and income, or non-filing letter when available.
- View the document online, print it, or download the file for the authorized recipient.
- Check the year and record type before sending it; a return transcript and an account transcript answer different questions.
Current-year availability can depend on whether the return was filed electronically or on paper and whether tax was owed. If the year you expect is not listed, allow for processing and posting rather than assuming the IRS has lost the return.
Request a transcript by mail
Get Transcript by Mail
The IRS Get Transcript by Mail service can send a tax return transcript or tax account transcript to the address already on file. The IRS reports that a mailed transcript ordered through its services typically arrives in 5 to 10 calendar days. This route is useful when you cannot use online access but only need one of those two transcript types.

Form 4506-T
Use Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return (revision April 2025) when you need a transcript type not offered through the basic mail order, when an online wage-and-income record exceeds the approximate 85-document limit, or when an institution has directed you to submit the form. Follow the form’s current instructions, identify the taxpayer and years precisely, select the requested transcript, and provide the requested delivery information. A mailed Form 4506-T transcript is sent through the IRS process, so allow the same general 5-to-10-calendar-day window the IRS gives for transcript mail orders, with additional time possible if the request needs correction or the record is not yet available.

For eligible tax return and tax account transcripts, call the IRS automated transcript line at 800-908-9946. The service mails the transcript to the address on file rather than reading the financial details over the phone. The IRS gives a typical delivery time of 5 to 10 calendar days.
- Call 800-908-9946 and follow the automated prompts.
- Provide the identifying information requested to match you with the IRS account.
- Choose the available tax year and transcript type.
- Wait for delivery to the address on file, then verify that the year and record match the request.
The automated line does not replace Form 4506-T for every transcript category; use the form when the phone service does not offer the record you need.
Let a lender request records through IVES
For a mortgage, loan, or another service that uses IRS income verification, you can authorize the organization to request a tax return or wage transcript through the IRS Income Verification Express Service (IVES). The taxpayer signs Form 4506-C as consent, and the IRS releases the authorized transcript to the participating third party. This is different from downloading a transcript yourself: the lender or service provider receives the record under the consent process.
Read the authorization carefully before signing. Confirm the tax years, the transcript type, the recipient, and the purpose. Ask the organization whether it needs a return transcript, a wage-and-income transcript, or another record so that the consent matches the actual request.

Availability, posting delays, and missing forms
The IRS’s stated year ranges describe how far back a record is generally offered, not whether every year is already processed. Return and record-of-account transcripts are generally available for the current and three prior tax years. Account and wage-and-income transcripts are generally available online for the current and nine prior tax years; account transcripts obtained by mail or phone generally cover the current and three prior years.
Current-year wage-and-income data usually appears in the first week of February, after employers and other issuers file their information returns. A missing W-2, 1099, 1098, or 5498 can therefore reflect timing rather than an error. If the expected form remains absent after normal posting time, contact the issuer and keep other evidence of the income or withholding while the correction is investigated.
A transcript can also be unavailable while a return is still being processed, when the selected year is outside the channel’s range, or when the requested record type is not eligible for that ordering method. Try the online account for a different channel, use Form 4506-T, or wait for processing rather than submitting duplicate requests with conflicting information.

IRS transcripts mask some personally identifying details, but financial information remains visible. Account balances, income amounts, withholding, payment entries, and third-party reporting can still expose sensitive information. Treat a downloaded or printed transcript like a financial record.
- Send it only to the organization that requested it and use that organization’s secure upload or portal when offered.
- Do not post screenshots or the PDF publicly, even if part of your Social Security number is hidden.
- Store downloaded files in a protected location and delete extra copies from shared computers.
- Check the tax year, taxpayer name, and transcript type before forwarding the document.
Common situations and the right choice
A mortgage lender asks for the return you filed
Ask whether a tax return transcript is acceptable. It shows the original Form 1040-series line items and schedules for an eligible year. If the lender specifically wants a complete signed return and attachments, a transcript will not satisfy that requirement; Form 4506 is the separate copy request.

You need to prove that a payment was credited
Choose a tax account transcript. Its purpose is to show account information and later transactions, including payment types and adjustments, rather than only the original return figures.
Your filed return was changed after submission
Use an account transcript to see post-filing adjustments. A tax return transcript continues to represent the original filing and will not update to show those later changes.
You are reconstructing income records
Request a wage-and-income transcript, but compare it with your own records. It contains information returns filed with the IRS, not every document an issuer may have sent you, and current-year data may not yet be posted.
An organization requests proof that you did not file
Provide a verification of non-filing letter if that is the requested document. Explain, when necessary, that it reports the IRS record as of the request date and does not determine whether the law required you to file.
The online wage transcript will not generate
First check whether the record exceeds the approximate 85-document online limit. If so, submit Form 4506-T. If the year is current, also consider whether the information returns have reached the IRS posting period.
What to check before submitting any request
- Identify the exact tax year, including whether “current year” means the year just filed or the year before it.
- Match the record to the question: original return, account activity, combined data, third-party forms, or non-filing status.
- Confirm whether the recipient accepts a transcript or demands a complete return copy.
- Use the IRS channel that supports the record: online account, mail, phone, or Form 4506-T.
- Allow for processing and posting delays, especially for current-year returns and information returns.
- Protect the transcript after receipt because masking does not remove its financial sensitivity.
For official descriptions, current ordering options, and form instructions, use the IRS pages for transcript types, Get your tax records and transcripts, transcripts or copies of returns, and the IRS Tax Tip dated August 26, 2026.
