“iPhone market share” has no single percentage unless the measure, market and time period are specified. It can mean Apple’s share of new smartphone shipments, sales, active phones in use, website views or industry revenue—and those figures answer different questions.

What does iPhone market share mean?

Market share is a ratio: the amount attributed to Apple divided by the corresponding total for the same measure, geography and period. For example, a share of smartphone shipments compares iPhone shipments with all smartphone shipments in that market and period. A percentage without those details is incomplete.

There is no universal, current “iPhone market share” value. A number may describe a particular quarter’s shipments, a country’s web traffic or an estimate of phones actively in use worldwide. Those values are not interchangeable.

How is iPhone market share calculated?

The general calculation is:

Apple’s amount for a defined measure ÷ total amount for the same measure × 100 = market share

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Blue - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.

The numerator and denominator must match in what they count, geography and time window. If the numerator counts shipments but the denominator counts sales, or if they cover different regions or periods, the result does not represent a like-for-like share.

What does each type of market-share figure measure?

Shipment share: new phones sent to market

Shipment share compares Apple’s new iPhone shipments with total smartphone shipments over a specified period and geography. It is a flow measured during that period; it does not tell you what proportion of phones currently in use are iPhones.

For Q2 2026, IDC reported Apple shipments of 55.7 million units out of 276.3 million worldwide smartphone shipments, giving Apple a 20.2% shipment share. IDC’s page, published August 28, 2026, labels the Q2 table “final historical results” and attributes it to its Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, August 6, 2026. IDC says company shipments are branded-device shipments, exclude OEM sales and exclude refurbished units. See IDC’s smartphone market-share data.

Sell-in and sell-through: channel shipments versus customer sales

Sell-in refers to products shipped into a distribution channel; sell-through refers to products sold through to customers. A tracker may report one or both. Counterpoint, for example, describes its iPhone-model reporting as covering quarterly sell-in versus sell-through. Keep the source’s label when reporting a figure: shipments into a channel should not be described as consumer purchases. Counterpoint’s global smartphone-share coverage.

Installed-base share: phones actively in use

Installed-base share estimates the share of active smartphones that are iPhones. Unlike shipments, which count devices entering the market over a period, an installed base is a stock of devices in use. It can reflect device longevity and user retention as well as new sales.

Counterpoint Research estimated that about one in four active smartphones worldwide was an iPhone in 2025. The estimate was published in 2026 and concerns the global active installed base, not a quarterly shipment share. The page does not provide enough detail to state the activity threshold used in that estimate. Read Counterpoint’s installed-base analysis.

“Active device” can also have a narrower, service-specific meaning. Apple’s App Store Connect glossary defines an active device for that service as a device with at least one session during the selected period, and says the totals are based on users who agree to share data. That definition applies to Apple’s service analytics; it does not establish the activity threshold used by industry-wide installed-base trackers. Apple’s App Store Connect metrics glossary.

Web-usage share: website views, not ownership

Some charts use website activity as a proxy for device use. The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s 2025 annex explains that StatCounter data is based on website views by different devices. A web-view share is therefore not a count of phones sold or owned. The CMA also notes that active-device data gives an overall view including new and existing devices, and that sources can produce slightly different shares because their underlying bases differ. Read the CMA’s 2025 evidence annex.

Check the chart’s category before interpreting it. An iPhone-vendor share and an iOS operating-system share are not automatically equivalent: an operating-system category can cover more than one kind of device.

Revenue share: money, not units

Revenue share compares Apple smartphone revenue with total smartphone-market revenue. Unit share counts devices; revenue share counts value. Because Apple occupies a premium price position, its share of market revenue can differ from its share of units. The European Commission discusses active devices, units sold and sales value separately, and notes Apple’s premium positioning in explaining why value share can exceed unit share. Its decision concerns Europe and historical periods, so it is not a current global revenue estimate. Consult the European Commission’s competition-case materials.

How to compare two iPhone market-share claims

Before treating two percentages as a trend or contradiction, check whether they use the same basis:

  • Measure: shipments, sell-through sales, active devices, website views or revenue.
  • Denominator and category: all smartphones, a regional market, a premium segment or an operating-system category.
  • Geography: worldwide, a country or a region.
  • Time: quarter, calendar year or a point-in-time installed base. Record the measurement period as well as the publication date.
  • Source and method: tracker, market-participant data or web-traffic panel; note whether the figure is an estimate and whether the source revises historical results.

For example, IDC’s 20.2% worldwide shipment share for Q2 2026 and Counterpoint’s estimate that about one in four active smartphones worldwide was an iPhone in 2025 do not conflict. One measures new shipments during a quarter; the other estimates devices in use over a different period.

How to report the number clearly

Attach the source, measure, geography and period to the figure. “Apple had 20.2% of worldwide smartphone shipments in Q2 2026, according to IDC” identifies what the percentage means. “iPhone market share is 20.2%” does not.
