iOS 26 lets you change how the iPhone Home Screen looks and how its apps, widgets, and pages are arranged. You can alter icon appearance and size, tint supported elements, resize widgets when an app offers those sizes, and move items between positions and pages. These controls change presentation and organization; they do not replace an app or rewrite what it does.
What Home Screen customization actually changes
Apple’s iOS 26 Home Screen controls operate in four areas: appearance, icon scale, widget size, and placement. Together, they let you create a layout that is easier to scan, matches your wallpaper, or separates different contexts such as work and travel.
- Appearance: App icons and widgets can use dark, clear, tinted, or automatic presentation where the control is available.
- Icon scale: App icons can remain at the standard size or be enlarged. Large icons no longer display app names.
- Widget footprint: You can choose among the sizes offered by each individual app.
- Organization: Apps and widgets can be placed in different positions, moved to other pages, and organized with separate layouts on those pages.
These are visual and organizational settings. The documented Home Screen controls do not modify an app’s underlying function or substitute different software for it. That describes the scope of Apple’s Home Screen instructions, not every customization feature elsewhere in iOS.
How to open the Home Screen customization controls
- Go to any Home Screen page.
- Touch and hold an empty area of the wallpaper until the icons begin to jiggle.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Customize to open the appearance and icon-size controls.
To rearrange items rather than change their appearance, remain in the editing state and drag an app or widget to a new position or page. You do not need an accessory or a separate utility for these settings; they are built into the iPhone software.

Can you change the color or style of iPhone app icons?
Yes. In the Customize panel, iOS 26 provides several appearance choices for Home Screen app icons. The exact visual result depends on the option you select and, for a tint, the color and saturation you choose.

Tinting is not the same as replacing every icon with a custom image. The documented control changes the system’s supported icon appearance; it does not install a new version of an app or alter the app’s internal artwork.
How to make iPhone app icons bigger
- Touch and hold an empty part of the Home Screen until the icons jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then Customize.
- Select the large app-icon size instead of the standard size.
Large icons use more of each icon’s tile and hide the app names beneath them. That trade-off can make a sparse layout easier to recognize visually, but it removes the text label that may help you identify similarly colored icons. Switching back to the standard size restores the labels.
What can you customize about widgets?
Widgets have their own appearance and size controls. Apple’s guide describes light and dark options and tint controls for widgets, so a widget can be made to fit the surrounding Home Screen rather than retaining a contrasting default treatment.

Widget size is set by the app
There is no universal widget-size menu that gives every app the same choices. Each app declares the widget formats it supports. One app may offer only small and medium widgets, while another may provide formats extending to extra large. If a size is absent from the widget’s menu, the Home Screen cannot create that size for that app.

When comparing two widgets, compare the choices shown for those particular apps rather than assuming that one app’s menu applies to all others.
Can you move iPhone apps anywhere on the Home Screen?
You can move apps and widgets to different positions on a page, including positions at the top, bottom, or sides, and you can drag them to another Home Screen page. This makes it possible to leave open space around a widget, put frequently used apps within a consistent reach, or create a page devoted to one activity.

- Touch and hold the app or widget you want to move.
- Drag it to the desired position. Move it to the edge of the screen and pause to switch pages, then drop it where you want it.
- Tap an empty area when the arrangement is finished.
Each Home Screen page can have its own arrangement. A page for work can therefore use different apps and widgets from a page for personal use without forcing both contexts into one grid.

Can Home Screen pages be hidden?
Yes. In the Home Screen editing view, page controls let you temporarily hide pages. Hiding a page does not describe deleting the apps on it; it removes that page from the normal swipe sequence until you show it again. This is useful for keeping a focused set of pages visible while preserving another layout for occasional use.
Page visibility is separate from app placement. An app can remain on a hidden page, while another page can continue to display its own independent arrangement.
What happens when you reset the Home Screen layout?
Apple provides a Reset Home Screen Layout command in Settings for rebuilding the standard arrangement. Use it when a hand-built layout has become difficult to manage or when you want to start arranging pages again from a predictable baseline.
The reset has specific consequences:
- Folders you created are removed.
- Downloaded apps are arranged alphabetically after the apps that came with the iPhone.
- The custom positions and folder structure you had built are not preserved as the active arrangement.
Because the reset removes user-created folders, treat it as a layout reset rather than a cosmetic toggle. If you only want a different look, use Edit and Customize instead.

What these controls cannot change
They cannot change an app’s underlying job
Changing an icon to dark, clear, or tinted does not change the app’s features, data, account, or internal operation. Enlarging an icon changes its presentation and hides its label; it does not enlarge the app’s interface after you open it.
They cannot guarantee a widget size that the app does not provide
Widget dimensions are app-dependent. If an app offers only small and medium formats, Home Screen customization cannot create a large or extra-large version of that widget.
They do not promise identical controls on every iPhone
Apple notes that iOS 26 features and apps can vary by iPhone model, region, language, and carrier. Before giving someone instructions for a particular option, confirm that the iPhone supports iOS 26 and that the relevant control appears on that device. A missing option may reflect availability rather than a mistake in the steps.
They do not replace an app with a custom software package
The Home Screen appearance tools change how an installed app is represented on the page. They are not an app-installation system and do not convert a widget or icon into different software. The documented controls should therefore be understood as presentation and organization features.

Choosing the right arrangement for your goal

Common problems and the quickest explanation
The Customize button is not visible
Make sure you first touch and hold an empty area until the icons jiggle, then tap Edit. If the control is still absent, check the iPhone model and software version, because Apple says feature availability can vary by model, region, language, and carrier.
The app names disappeared
The large icon setting hides names by design. Return to Edit and Customize, then select the standard icon size if labels are more useful than the larger artwork.
A widget has no size option you expected
The app may not provide that format. Compare the sizes shown in that app’s widget menu; iOS cannot add a size the developer has not supplied.

An item will not sit where you want
Enter editing mode and drag it again, pausing at the edge to move to another page. Apps and widgets can occupy positions at the top, bottom, and sides, but the available space still depends on the other items already on that page.
Availability and version checks
The instructions here describe the iOS 26 Home Screen guides from Apple Support. Apple’s iOS 26 overview cautions that new features and apps may vary by iPhone model, region, language, and carrier. Check the iPhone’s installed iOS version and the controls displayed on the device before assuming that a particular appearance, widget format, or page option is available.
