For the three demanding iPhone games examined, the common hardware floor is an A17 Pro chip or later. The iOS minimum is game-specific: Resident Evil 4 and Death Stranding Director’s Cut require iOS 17.0 or later, while Assassin’s Creed Mirage requires iOS 17.4 or later. These are the named games’ App Store compatibility floors, not a universal rule for every graphically demanding title.
The same listings identify the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max among compatible devices, along with later models. Check the exact game listing before buying or installing, then verify that your phone has enough free storage: the store lists up to 23.7 GB for Assassin’s Creed Mirage and 77 GB for Death Stranding Director’s Cut.
Two separate requirements determine compatibility
A demanding game has to pass two independent checks. First, the iPhone must use the required class of processor. Second, the operating system must meet that title’s minimum iOS version. Passing only one check is not enough: a phone with a suitable chip can still be blocked by an old iOS installation, and a fully updated older phone may lack the required hardware.

Hardware is listed as a chip floor
Each of the three App Store entries uses the wording “A17 Pro chip or later.” That is a hardware eligibility statement. It does not say that every iPhone with a recent-looking model number qualifies, and it does not establish a frame-rate target or graphics setting. Use the chip requirement, together with the model names shown on the individual listing, as the first screening step.

iOS is a separate, title-specific floor
The minimum operating-system version is not identical across the examples. Two titles specify iOS 17.0 or later; one specifies iOS 17.4 or later. A phone that satisfies iOS 17.0 can therefore meet the requirement for one game while failing the requirement for another.

The table reflects the US App Store compatibility entries checked in 2026. Store pages can change as developers add support or revise installation information, so treat the live entry for your region and device as the final check.
What “A17 Pro or later” means when you are choosing a phone
The requirement is expressed by processor generation rather than by a generic label such as “new iPhone.” The A17 Pro is the common listed minimum in all three examples. “Or later” covers subsequent chip generations when the game’s compatibility page includes them, but the listings—not the chip name alone—determine which specific models are accepted.

Why the model list still matters
App Store compatibility information pairs the chip floor with supported iPhone models. The checked entries name the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and also identify later compatible models. This matters because a model name is the practical way most buyers identify a phone, while the chip requirement explains why that model is eligible. Do not infer support for an unlisted model merely because it looks similar or has a numerically higher name.
What the hardware line does not promise
An eligibility line tells you that the title is designed to install on the listed hardware. It does not promise a particular resolution, frame rate, thermal behavior, battery life, or visual preset. Those outcomes can vary with a game update, scene complexity, temperature, available storage and other software running on the phone. No performance measurements are supplied by these compatibility entries.
How to check your iPhone before installing
- Identify the exact model. Open Settings, choose General, then About, and note the model name. If the phone is not clearly one of the models shown by the game’s listing, do not assume that its chip or generation is sufficient.
- Open the game’s current App Store page. Use the compatibility or information section and read the requirement sentence for that title. Look specifically for the A17 Pro-or-later wording and the minimum iOS version; do not substitute the requirement from another game.
- Check the installed iOS version. In Settings > General > About, read iOS Version. Compare it with the title’s minimum. For the examples here, the relevant thresholds are 17.0 and 17.4.
- Install an available iOS update when appropriate. Open Settings > General > Software Update and review the version offered for your phone. Updating can satisfy an operating-system floor, but it cannot add an A17 Pro chip to an older device.
- Confirm free storage. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Compare the available space with the size shown on the game page and leave practical room for the rest of your apps and normal system activity.
If any step produces a different result from the store page—for example, the model is absent even though the iOS version is high—treat the store’s compatibility statement as decisive for that game.

Plan for very large downloads
Large 3D games can consume far more storage than ordinary mobile titles. The checked listings provide two concrete figures:
- Assassin’s Creed Mirage: the US App Store page says “Up to 23.7 GB.” This is a listing figure checked in 2026 and can change with updates.
- Death Stranding Director’s Cut: the listing gives a size of 77 GB. This is also a store figure, not a laboratory measurement, and may change as the product is updated.
The Resident Evil 4 entry is used here for its hardware and iOS requirement; no storage decision figure is included for it. Because store sizes are revisable, check the current page immediately before installation rather than relying on an old screenshot or a reseller’s specification.
When storage prevents installation
First remove or offload items you can restore, such as unused apps or locally stored media, then recheck iPhone Storage. Do not delete irreplaceable photos or documents without a separate backup. If the listing size fits only barely, create more headroom: the phone still needs space for iOS, other apps and routine updates. A successful download also does not mean that future patches will remain the same size, so keep your storage plan flexible.

Controller support is optional, not a hardware requirement
The Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Death Stranding Director’s Cut listings mention support for compatible PlayStation, Xbox or MFi controllers. That makes a physical controller an optional input choice for those titles; it is not listed as a prerequisite for installing or playing them.
Verify the exact controller
“Compatible PlayStation, Xbox or MFi controller” describes supported categories, not every controller sold under those names. Check the game’s current listing and the controller’s compatibility information for the exact model, connection method and required software. If you do not have a controller, use the game’s on-screen controls first; the store requirement does not say that a separate controller is mandatory.

What to do when your iPhone does not qualify
The chip is below A17 Pro
An iOS update cannot change the processor in your phone. If the listing requires A17 Pro or later and your model is not included in its compatibility list, the supported options are to use a compatible iPhone or choose a different game with a lower published hardware floor. Do not treat a successful download from an old listing, a beta build or an unofficial source as proof of current support.

The iOS version is too old
Check Software Update and install an offered update that reaches the game’s threshold. For these examples, a device on iOS 17.0 through 17.3 could meet the listed floor for Resident Evil 4 or Death Stranding Director’s Cut but not the iOS 17.4 floor for Assassin’s Creed Mirage. If no qualifying update is offered, the phone may be unable to run that title even when its chip appears sufficient.
Storage is the limiting factor
Free space is a capacity problem, not a chip or iOS problem. Clear enough space for the current listing figure, preserve a safety margin for system use, and recheck after updates. If a 77 GB listing cannot fit comfortably, selecting a smaller game or a device with more capacity is more reliable than repeatedly retrying the installation.
Minimum compatibility versus a good playing experience
App Store minimums answer a narrow question: whether the developer lists the phone and operating-system combination as supported. They do not rank compatible models, distinguish between sustained and short sessions, or describe how the game behaves after a long play period. Use the minimum as a go/no-go filter, then make practical decisions about storage, cooling, battery condition and controls based on your own use.
For a purchase decision, prioritize the requirements in this order:
- Confirm that the exact iPhone model appears in the game’s compatibility information.
- Confirm that the installed or available iOS version reaches that game’s threshold.
- Confirm that free storage accommodates the current listing size and future updates.
- Decide whether touch controls are adequate or a supported controller would improve play.
Why you should recheck requirements over time
Compatibility pages are living product information. Developers can add later iPhone models, raise an operating-system minimum, or change the displayed download size. The three examples come from US listings and establish requirements for those games, not for every demanding iPhone game or every regional storefront. Before installing after a long break—or before buying a phone specifically for one title—open the current listing, read its compatibility sentence and compare it with the phone’s model, iOS version and available storage.
