An IP rating tells you how an enclosure performed in specific dust and water tests; it is not a promise that a Bluetooth speaker is indestructible or safe in every liquid. Choose the rating by the exposure you actually expect: occasional splashes, shower spray, directed water jets, pool use, beach use, or temporary immersion. Then check the speaker’s own manual for depth, time, port-cover, cleaning and charging conditions.

The most useful distinction is between the two characters after “IP.” The first concerns solids such as dust. The second concerns water. An “X” means that characteristic was not specified in the code—not that the product has zero protection.

What an IP code actually measures

IP is the enclosure-protection code defined by IEC 60529, the international standard for degrees of protection provided by enclosures. The IEC catalog identifies the consolidated version as edition 2.2, published on August 29, 2013, with corrigenda listed through January 2019 and a stability date of 2027.

  • First position: protection against solids, including dust.
  • Second position: protection against water.

Each position describes a separate test condition. A speaker can therefore have a specified water rating while leaving its dust rating unspecified, or it can state both.

Why “X” does not mean “no protection”

In IPX7, the X means the first characteristic was not specified in that code. The 7 is the stated water characteristic. In IP67, both positions are specified: 6 is the dust-related characteristic and 7 is the water-related characteristic. Reading the two positions separately prevents a common mistake—assuming that an immersion rating automatically tells you anything about dust, or that an unspecified dust position means the speaker is unprotected.

Match the water test to the way you will use the speaker

Water exposure is not one single condition. A light splash, a shower stream, a hose-like jet and temporary immersion place different demands on an enclosure. The highest-looking number is not automatically the right choice, because the tests are not interchangeable and the manufacturer may set additional conditions.

Splashes and ordinary wet-room use

JBL’s consumer bathroom-speaker guide describes IPX4 as protection from splashes coming from any direction. That is useful buying language for a speaker that may receive incidental spray near a sink or bath. The same guide recommends water-resistance level 7 for a bathroom speaker; that is JBL’s consumer guidance, not a universal IEC rule or an independent threshold for every bathroom.

A shower can involve more than incidental splashing. If the speaker will be in the direct path of a showerhead, look for the exact water-jet or shower-use statement in the product documentation rather than assuming that an IPX4 label covers a concentrated stream. Keep the speaker out of the spray path when the instructions do not expressly allow that use.

Poolside, beach and accidental drops

An immersion rating is relevant when a speaker could fall briefly into water. JBL gives IPX7 examples rated for immersion up to 1 metre (3.3 feet) for up to 30 minutes for the listed products. That is a manufacturer specification for those products, not a guarantee that every IPX7 speaker has identical construction, depth, duration or after-care requirements.

IPX7 should not be read as permission to leave a speaker underwater, use it as a submerged sound system, or expose it indefinitely to waves. An immersion test also does not establish resistance to every kind of jet, spray pattern or chemical.

Deeper or longer immersion

IPX8 conditions are set by the manufacturer. There is no single generic IPX8 depth or duration that can safely be applied to every speaker. A listing that says IPX8 should therefore be accompanied by product-specific conditions—such as stated depth, time and test arrangement—before you rely on it for a particular activity. If those conditions are not published, ask the manufacturer or choose a product whose manual clearly matches your use.

Directed water jets and outdoor conditions

JBL’s outdoor-speaker guide presents protection levels as a progression from splashes to water jets, immersion and high-temperature water. The practical lesson is more important than memorizing a number: a speaker expected to face a directed jet needs documentation for that type of exposure, while a speaker that might be dropped in a pool needs an immersion specification. Use the product’s own rating and instructions for the final decision because simplified consumer charts do not replace the standard’s test definitions.

How to read a speaker listing before you buy

  1. Describe the real exposure. Decide whether the speaker will be indoors near a sink, in a steamy bathroom, beside a pool, on a boat or beach, in rain, or at risk of being dropped into water. Note whether the water is incidental, directed or fully immersive.
  2. Read both IP positions. Check whether the listing gives a dust characteristic as well as a water characteristic. IPX7 and IP67 do not communicate the same information: the latter includes a stated dust characteristic.
  3. Find the test conditions. For immersion, look for the manufacturer’s depth and time. For IPX7 products cited by JBL, the stated example is 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. Do not expand that statement to another model without its own documentation.
  4. Check the manual for use restrictions. Look for instructions about port covers, removable seals, placement, cleaning and charging. An IP code does not override a warning that a cover must be closed or that a particular connector must remain dry.
  5. Plan for the actual liquid. Determine whether the speaker will contact tap water, pool water, salt water or another liquid. Chemical exposure can matter even when the enclosure passed a fresh-water test.
  6. Evaluate non-IP requirements. Water protection does not tell you whether the speaker has the battery life, volume, size, Bluetooth range, controls or carrying style you need.

IPX4, IPX7, IPX8 and IP67 in practical terms

Code or description What is established What it does not establish Best buying question
IPX4 JBL describes this level as splash protection from any direction. It does not by itself prove suitability for a concentrated shower stream, hose jet or immersion. Will the speaker receive only incidental splashes, or will water hit it directly?
IPX7 Water characteristic specified for immersion. JBL’s listed examples are up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. It does not specify the first characteristic, guarantee indefinite underwater use, or prove resistance to every jet or chemical. What depth, duration and placement does this exact model’s manual state?
IPX8 Water characteristic specified under manufacturer-defined conditions. There is no universal depth or duration to assume from “8” alone. What exact depth, time and test conditions does the manufacturer publish?
IP67 Both a dust-related characteristic and a water characteristic are specified. JBL identifies the Charge 5 as IP67 waterproof and dustproof. The code does not describe audio quality, battery life, resistance to wear, or suitability for every liquid. Do the published dust and water conditions match the environment where you will carry it?

A concrete example: reading the JBL Charge 5 code

JBL identifies its Charge 5 portable Bluetooth speaker as IP67 waterproof and dustproof. Its official specification sheet describes wireless Bluetooth streaming and IP67 protection; the product page provides the model listing.

  • Ultra-portable JBL Pro Sound with punchier bass: Don't let its little size fool you. The JBL Go 4 packs a serious musical punch. Your friends won't believe how much great JBL Pro Sound comes out of such a small speaker.
  • Up to 7 hours of playtime plus 2 hours with Playtime Boost: Don't sweat the small stuff like charging your battery. JBL Go 4 gives you up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge. Tap Playtime Boost to add up to 2 more hours to your battery life.
  • Waterproof and dustproof: The JBL Go 4's IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating ensures this portable speaker can handle almost any environment, from a poolside party to a seaside picnic.
  • Multi-speaker connection by Auracast: Want even bigger JBL Pro Sound? Pair two Go4s for stereo sound, or wirelessly connect multiple JBL Auracast-enabled speakers using Auracast for even bigger sound.
  • Made in part with recycled materials: The JBL Go 4 incorporates post-consumer recycled plastic and fabric for the speaker grille. It's also packaged in FSC-certified paper printed with soy ink.

The useful point is how to decode the label, not to treat it as an independent durability test. The 6 tells you that a dust characteristic is stated, while the 7 tells you that a water characteristic is stated. You still need the product’s instructions for port covers, cleaning, charging and conditions after exposure. A code alone cannot tell you how the speaker will perform after years of seal wear or repeated contact with chemicals.

Salt water, chlorine and other liquids

“My device is waterproof, but what about salt water or chlorine water?” is a question JBL addresses directly in its support guidance. JBL says the standard waterproofing condition it discusses is tap water. It advises rinsing the speaker with fresh water after pool or ocean use, then drying the covers and areas where water can collect.

Pool chemicals and salt can damage waterproof seals or harm the finish over time if they are not rinsed away. That is care guidance from JBL; other manufacturers may specify different procedures or prohibit particular liquids. Follow the exact manual for your model, especially if it has exposed controls, fabric, charging contacts or a removable cover.

Care steps that preserve the protection

Before exposing the speaker

  • Inspect the charging-port cover and any gasket or flap. Make sure it is fully closed and free of grit.
  • Check for cracks, dents, loose panels or a cover that no longer sits flush. An IP rating describes the tested enclosure condition, not damage that occurred later.
  • Confirm that the manual permits the planned exposure. “Waterproof” in a headline is not a substitute for the model’s conditions.

After pool, ocean or dirty-water use

  1. Rinse the exterior with fresh water as the manufacturer directs.
  2. Dry the outside, port covers and recesses where water can remain trapped.
  3. Leave the speaker to dry according to the manual before opening a port or connecting a charger.

The cited materials do not establish a universal rule for charging every wet speaker. Treat charging as model-specific: use the manual’s instruction rather than assuming that an immersion rating makes a wet charging connector safe.

Common IP-rating mistakes and how to avoid them

“Higher number” means protection from everything

The two positions describe different characteristics, and the water tests represent different exposures. Compare the test condition with your use instead of ranking numbers in isolation.

IPX7 means dustproof

The X means the first characteristic was not specified in that code. If dust matters, look for a product with a stated first digit, such as the IP67 example above.

IP67 means safe in any water

IP67 identifies specified dust and water characteristics, but it is not a general promise against salt, chlorine, cleaning fluids, pressure jets, long submersion or damage from worn seals. Read the care and exposure limits for the exact model.

A waterproof label removes the need for maintenance

Seals, covers and finishes can be affected by grit, impact, salt and pool chemicals. Rinsing and drying after those exposures is part of responsible use, not an optional extra.

The rating replaces all other buying criteria

Once the water requirement is satisfied, compare the practical qualities that determine whether you will enjoy using the speaker: battery endurance, loudness, controls, portability, wireless behavior and how easily it can be carried or secured.

A quick decision framework

Use this sequence when two speakers appear similar:

  1. Mostly dry with occasional splashes: start by examining a splash rating such as the IPX4 example, then check whether the manufacturer allows your placement.
  2. Bathroom or shower area: distinguish incidental splashes from direct shower spray. JBL recommends level 7 for a bathroom speaker, but treat that as JBL’s guidance and verify the chosen model’s own instructions.
  3. Pool or ocean nearby: prefer documentation that states immersion conditions if a drop is plausible, and follow the fresh-water rinse and drying guidance.
  4. Dusty outdoor location: choose a model that states a dust characteristic as well as water protection when dust exposure is part of the job.
  5. Jets, deeper water or unusual liquids: require explicit product-specific documentation. Do not infer suitability from a generic “waterproof” claim.

The bottom line for choosing a waterproof Bluetooth speaker

Start with the exposure, not the marketing adjective. Decode the first IP position for dust, the second for water, and remember that X means “not specified.” Use splash-rated protection for splash-level conditions, seek stated immersion limits for accidental drops, and require manufacturer-defined conditions for IPX8 or unusual environments. Finally, keep covers closed, rinse salt or chlorine away with fresh water when the manufacturer advises it, dry the speaker before handling ports, and treat the manual—not the code alone—as the final authority.
