Yes. When you buy an African share, your result in your home currency depends on two moving parts: the share price in its local market and the exchange rate between that market’s currency and your own. A local-market gain can become a loss after conversion, while a currency gain can improve the result of a flat or falling share. Conversion spreads, transfer fees, settlement arrangements and currency controls can further reduce what you ultimately receive.
Africa is not a single currency exposure. The relevant risks depend on the country, security, fund structure, broker, custody chain and your base currency. Before placing an order, identify the actual currency exposure, determine whether any hedge is explicit, and confirm how dividends and sale proceeds can be converted and repatriated.
How foreign-exchange movements change your return
The return you see in a company’s local market is not automatically the return you realize at home. In simplified terms, your home-currency value is the local share value multiplied by the exchange rate at purchase and sale, less dealing and conversion costs. A change in either component changes the result.
A local gain can become a home-currency loss
Suppose a share rises 10% in its local currency while that currency falls 15% against your home currency. Ignoring fees, a 100-unit investment becomes 110 units locally. If the currency now buys only 85% as much of your home currency, the translated value is 110 × 0.85 = 93.5. The local gain has become an approximately 6.5% home-currency loss. This is an illustration of the mechanics, not a forecast.

The reverse can happen as well. A share that is unchanged locally can be worth more in your home currency if the local currency appreciates. A local decline can be partly cushioned by a favorable currency move. The exchange-rate effect is therefore separate from the company’s earnings, valuation and local share-price performance.
Your base currency determines the outcome
The same African security can produce different translated returns for investors whose base currencies differ. Investor.gov states: “When the exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and the currency of an international investment changes, it can increase or reduce your investment return.” The statement is written for U.S.-dollar returns; apply the same principle using your own base currency rather than assuming a dollar result applies to everyone. Why an African-share portfolio can contain several currency risks
A portfolio invested across African countries may be exposed to several currencies, each with its own monetary policy, liquidity, inflation environment, settlement system and rules for converting or transferring funds. A country’s currency can move differently from its neighbors, so a regional fund is not a single, uniform foreign-exchange position.

Some currencies are managed or linked to another currency rather than freely floating. That arrangement can reduce day-to-day movements for a period, but it does not remove risk. A policy change, devaluation or other regime adjustment can produce an abrupt change in the exchange rate. Fund disclosures describe such possibilities as risks, not as events that must occur. The VanEck Africa fund disclosure filed with the SEC discusses multiple African currencies, managed regimes and the possibility of sudden adjustments.

Revenue currency and listing currency may differ
A company can earn revenue, pay costs and hold assets in several currencies while its shares trade in one local market. That creates an economic exposure that may not match the currency shown beside the share price. Review the company’s reporting, geographic revenue mix and liabilities if the distinction matters to your decision. A fund can add another layer by holding companies listed in different countries or incorporated outside Africa.
Costs and restrictions that affect what you can get back
Even if the exchange rate moves in your favor, the amount arriving in your account can be lower than a simple price calculation suggests.
Conversion spreads and transaction charges
A dealer or broker normally quotes a buy and sell rate rather than the mid-market rate. The difference between those rates is a spread. You may also pay explicit conversion, brokerage, custody, settlement or transfer charges. Compare the rate actually offered for the currency and transaction size, not only a headline commission.
Controls, delays and repatriation
Some markets impose rules that affect conversion or transfers across borders. A restriction can delay, limit or complicate converting dividends and sale proceeds into your home currency. A delay matters because the exchange rate can move while money is waiting in a local account or settlement system. The VanEck disclosure and Investor.gov both warn that currency controls and other local conditions can affect liquidity and the ability to move funds.

Rules differ by country, investor type, security and transaction. Do not assume that a control reported for one market applies to every African market. Confirm the current procedure with the broker, custodian and relevant local authority before committing money.
Settlement timing creates an additional exposure
Order execution, local settlement, dividend payment and cross-border transfer may occur on different dates. Your effective exchange rate can therefore be the rate available when cash is converted, not the rate on the day you decided to sell. Ask for the expected settlement calendar and the point at which the broker converts currency.
Compare the main ways to obtain African-share exposure
A direct local listing, a pooled fund and a depositary receipt can all provide exposure to African companies, but their currency and operational risks are not interchangeable.

The route changes where currency conversion, custody and operational risk appears; it does not automatically eliminate the underlying exposure. Read the instrument’s prospectus, terms and fee schedule rather than inferring protection from its trading venue.

Do not treat a fund’s quote currency as a hedge
A fund may be listed or reported in U.S. dollars, euros or another currency while owning shares whose economic values are in local currencies. Unless the prospectus states that the relevant exposure is hedged, the quoted currency is only the unit in which you see the price or account value. The VanEck Africa Index ETF summary prospectus is an example of why investors must read the mandate and hedge policy. Its definition of an African company includes a local listing or a company incorporated elsewhere with at least 50% of revenues or related assets in Africa; that 50% threshold defines eligibility, not the size of an FX loss or a return statistic.
A step-by-step FX due-diligence process
Use this sequence for a direct share, fund or depositary receipt. Keep the answers with your trade records so you can explain the result later.
- Write down your base currency. State the currency in which you measure wealth, spending needs and eventual withdrawals. A dollar-based explanation may not fit a euro-, pound- or rand-based investor.
- Identify every underlying market. For a direct share, record the listing country and trading currency. For a fund or receipt, list each country and currency in the portfolio or underlying share.
- Separate economic exposure from the quote currency. Note the currencies of company revenue, costs, debt and assets where disclosed. For a pooled product, read the holdings and mandate rather than relying on the exchange’s quotation currency.
- Find the explicit hedge policy. Look for the words “currency hedged,” the hedging instruments, target ratio, rebalance frequency, costs and permitted deviations. If no policy is stated, treat the exposure as unhedged for planning purposes; do not assume a hedge.
- Map the cash path. Record where purchase cash is converted, where dividends and sale proceeds are held, and who converts them back to your base currency. Ask whether conversion is automatic or requires an instruction.
- Obtain the all-in price. Request the quoted exchange rate, spread, commission, custody charge, transfer fee and any local taxes or levies that the broker says apply. Confirm whether the quote is firm, indicative or time-limited.
- Check settlement and repatriation. Ask how long settlement normally takes, whether local bank or regulatory approvals are required, and what happens if a transfer is delayed or a currency is temporarily unavailable.
- Verify eligibility and protections. Confirm that you are allowed to buy the instrument, that the broker and custodian are properly registered for your jurisdiction, and which investor-compensation or dispute-resolution rules apply.
- Model adverse and favorable moves. Calculate the result if the share is flat but the currency moves against you, if the share rises while the currency falls, and if both move in your favor. Include the actual spread and fees in each case.
- Set an exit and cash-conversion plan. Decide in advance how dividends, sale proceeds and any residual local-currency balance will be handled. A plan that works only when markets are open and transfers are unrestricted is incomplete.
Broker, custody and investor-protection checks
Access is not the same as protection. Investor.gov says a U.S. broker may be able to process orders in foreign-market shares, but it cautions that a U.S. investor using an unregistered foreign broker may not receive the same protections available through a registered U.S. intermediary. How to compare two possible investments
Use a side-by-side worksheet instead of comparing only local share-price charts. The following axes capture the main differences identified in investor guidance and fund disclosures.

The Allan Gray Africa Equity Fund prospectus illustrates why fund documents should be read for their specific dealing, currency and operational terms. A prospectus for one product cannot establish that all African investments have the same controls or risks.
Practical scenarios to test before buying
Share rises, currency falls
This is the classic offsetting case. Your local gain may be reduced or erased after translation. Use the combined calculation rather than adding percentages, because the currency move applies to the changed share value.
Share falls, currency rises
A stronger local currency can cushion a local-market loss for a foreign investor, but it does not guarantee a positive result. Fees, spreads and the size of the share decline still matter.
Both move against you
A falling share and weakening local currency compound one another. This is the scenario to stress-test if you need the money in your home currency on a fixed date.
The investment is profitable but cash is trapped temporarily
A sale can show a gain while conversion or transfer is delayed by settlement procedures or currency controls. During the delay, the local currency and the home-currency value can continue to move. Treat liquidity and repatriation as part of the investment decision, not as an administrative detail after the sale.
Questions to resolve before submitting an order
- What is my base currency, and which exchange rate will determine my final result?
- Which African countries and currencies am I actually exposed to?
- Is the exposure hedged by a documented policy, or merely quoted in another currency?
- What spread and total charges apply to purchase, dividends, sale and repatriation?
- Who holds the asset and cash, and which regulator governs that entity?
- How long do settlement, conversion and cross-border transfers normally take?
- Could a local rule delay or restrict conversion for my investor category?
- What happens if the broker, custodian or local market is temporarily unable to process a transaction?
- Can I tolerate a local-market gain turning into a home-currency loss?
- Have I checked the current terms for this exact security and route rather than relying on a regional generalization?
Limits of general guidance
Foreign-exchange risk is only one part of investing in African shares. Country, company, market, political, liquidity, tax and legal risks also require instrument-specific review. Rules, settlement practices and conversion pricing can change, so confirm current requirements with the relevant broker, fund, custodian and regulator. The cited fund filings describe risks for those particular products; they do not prove that every African market behaves the same way.
