Steam does not publish a minimum internet download or upload speed for Steam Link on Android. For play inside your home, the decisive factor is usually the local connection between the host PC, router and Android device—not the headline speed of your broadband plan. Steam asks you to put the phone and host PC on the same network, recommends a 5 GHz wireless router, and says a wired host connection gives the best result. Its often-quoted 3 Mbit/s figure is a starting point for tuning an individual stream, not a universal minimum.
The direct answer: there is no official Mbps minimum
Valve’s Android and Remote Play guidance does not specify a minimum download speed, upload speed, latency target, or universal bandwidth requirement for streaming Steam games to an Android phone or tablet. That means a claim such as “Steam Link requires at least 3 Mbps” overstates what Steam publishes.
Steam’s network-settings guidance uses 3 Mbit/s as the starting value when you manually tune the stream bandwidth. You increase the value until hitches appear and then reduce it. This procedure adapts the stream to your particular router, radio conditions, host computer and Android device; it is not a broadband-service requirement that applies to everyone.
For an in-home session, think of Steam Link primarily as a local-network video stream. Your PC renders the game, captures its video and audio, sends those data to the Android client, and receives controller or touchscreen input in return. A fast speed-test result from your internet provider cannot by itself prove that this path will be smooth.

What Steam Link is actually sending
Remote Play does not move the game’s rendering workload to the phone. The game must run correctly on the host computer, which remains responsible for processing the game. Steam then encodes the host’s game picture and sound for the client, while the client sends input back to the host.
- Host PC: runs the installed game and Steam, captures the output and sends the stream.
- Android device: receives and decodes the stream, displays it and returns input.
- Network path: carries video, audio and control traffic in both directions.
Because this exchange is continuous, consistency matters as much as raw throughput. Interference, queueing, radio range, competing devices and sudden changes in network time can produce a freeze even when a conventional internet speed test reports a high number.
Requirements for an Android Steam Link setup
Steam’s Android page lists Android 5.0 or newer. It also calls for a computer running Steam, a supported operating system and a wireless router; the same page recommends a router with a 5 GHz band. The practical setup sequence is short:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Turn on the host PC and sign in to Steam.
- Connect the Android phone or tablet to the same network as the host PC.
- Install the Steam Link app on Android and follow its on-screen pairing instructions.
- Confirm that the game launches and plays normally on the host before troubleshooting the stream.
“Same network” is the key instruction for a home session. It generally means the devices are attached to the same home router, rather than the phone using cellular data while the PC remains on home Wi-Fi.

Why your broadband speed test can mislead you
An internet speed test usually measures the route from your device to an external test server. In a same-home Steam Link session, most stream traffic stays between the PC and Android device on your local network. The relevant bottleneck may therefore be the wireless hop, the router’s handling of local traffic, the host’s connection, or the client’s ability to decode the chosen stream.
For remote play away from home, the stream travels from the host through its internet connection to the Android client’s internet connection. Both ends then matter, and latency and variability become especially important. Steam’s reviewed guidance still does not provide a numeric broadband threshold for remote sessions or a formula that says how much faster remote play must be than local play.
Do not treat a high download figure as a guarantee of low delay. Likewise, do not assume that a low result automatically rules out Steam Link; the outcome depends on the stream settings and the complete network path.

Connection choices: what Steam favors
| Connection choice | Steam’s guidance | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Host PC connected by Ethernet | Steam says a wired network provides the best result and highly recommends Ethernet when the client supports it. | Removing the host’s Wi-Fi hop can reduce wireless contention and make network timing more consistent. |
| Both devices on Wi-Fi | Permitted for the Android setup; Steam recommends a 5 GHz wireless router. | Performance depends on signal strength, walls, distance, channel congestion and other wireless traffic. |
| Remote session over the internet | Supported by Remote Play, but the reviewed Steam pages publish no minimum broadband number. | The host and client internet paths, their latency and their variability all affect play. |

How to configure the network for smoother streaming
Wire the host first
If the PC has an Ethernet port and is close enough to the router, connect it directly with an Ethernet cable. Steam specifically recommends this arrangement because having both host and client communicate over Wi-Fi increases the opportunities for interference.
Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi when the device is within range
Steam recommends 5 GHz for Android. The band usually offers more room than crowded 2.4 GHz networks, but its shorter range means walls and distance can weaken it faster. Put the router and Android device where they can maintain a strong signal rather than choosing a band by name alone.
Reduce radio congestion
- Choose a less congested Wi-Fi channel when your router allows manual selection.
- Improve router and device placement; avoid hiding the router behind furniture or placing it at the edge of the home when the play area is far away.
- Consider channel width carefully. Wider channels can be more sensitive to distance and radio-frequency noise.
- Pause or move other heavy Wi-Fi activity while testing Steam Link.
- Update router firmware where the manufacturer provides a relevant update.
These changes address the local radio conditions that a broadband speed test does not measure.

- Open Steam Link’s streaming or advanced streaming settings on the Android client.
- Enable the performance overlay so you can observe network behavior while playing.
- Set manual stream bandwidth to 3 Mbit/s, Steam’s stated starting point for this procedure.
- Play a demanding section of a game and increase the bandwidth gradually.
- When hitches begin, lower the value until the stream is stable again.
- If instability remains, select a lower streaming-quality mode such as Balanced or Fast, and reduce the maximum capture resolution or bandwidth limit.
The correct setting is specific to your equipment and conditions. A higher limit can improve image quality when the path has spare capacity, but it cannot repair interference or an unstable connection.
Diagnosing stutter, freezing and delayed controls
Watch network-time variability
Steam’s performance overlay includes a cyan network-time line. Large spikes indicate highly variable network time and often appear alongside stuttering or freezing. This is a more useful clue than looking only at an internet-plan speed number.
Separate capacity problems from interference
- Stutter that tracks other Wi-Fi activity: stop competing transfers or move the host to Ethernet.
- Problems that worsen with distance or walls: improve placement, use the recommended 5 GHz band within its effective range, or test a closer location.
- Stable play only at lower quality: keep the lower quality or bandwidth limit; the original setting exceeded what the path could sustain.
- Persistent spikes after lowering quality: inspect channel congestion, router placement, firmware and whether both devices are sharing a busy wireless link.
Steam also provides network-prioritization controls. Where available, prioritize host and client traffic through your router’s quality-of-service feature or Steam’s network-prioritization setting.
Local play versus remote play
Inside the home
The Android device and host PC use the same home network. The router’s wireless performance, the host’s wired or wireless connection and the physical layout are usually more consequential than the advertised internet tier.

Away from home
The host must upload the stream through its internet connection, and the Android device must receive it through its current connection. Traffic crosses additional networks, so delay and variation can change with location and time. Valve’s reviewed pages do not state a minimum upload speed, download speed or latency target for this mode. Test the actual location and reduce quality if the route cannot sustain the selected stream.
Controllers and Android compatibility
Steam lists several officially supported controller options for Android: Steam Controller, Xbox One S Controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 and newer, Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile. Other controllers may work, but Steam does not identify them as officially supported on the Android page. A controller is optional if your game accepts touchscreen input, but compatibility should be checked before treating input problems as a network fault.
Common misconceptions about Steam Link speed
“3 Mbps is the minimum internet plan.”
No. It is Steam’s starting value for manual bandwidth tuning. The same guidance tells you to raise it until hitches appear and then back off.
“A gigabit broadband plan guarantees smooth play.”
No. A plan’s maximum internet rate does not remove local Wi-Fi interference, poor placement, variable network time or an overloaded host/client path.
“The phone must have the fastest possible Wi-Fi mode.”
Not necessarily. A stable connection with appropriate bandwidth and low variation is more useful than a nominal link rate that collapses through walls or congestion.
“Remote play has the same requirements as playing beside the PC.”
No numeric comparison is published by Steam. Remote play adds the two internet access links and the intervening route, so its conditions must be evaluated separately.
A practical readiness checklist
- Android device runs Android 5.0 or newer.
- Steam is installed, signed in and able to launch the game on the host PC.
- For home play, the phone and PC are connected to the same network.
- The host is connected by Ethernet where practical.
- The Android device uses a strong 5 GHz connection when it is within suitable range.
- Other heavy Wi-Fi traffic is paused while you test.
- The performance overlay shows no recurring large cyan network-time spikes.
- Bandwidth, quality and capture resolution have been reduced if the stream hitches.
Bottom line for choosing an internet plan
There is no Valve-published Mbps answer to use as a shopping threshold. For Steam Link inside your home, improve the local path first: connect the host by Ethernet, use a well-placed 5 GHz network for Android, reduce interference and tune bandwidth from Steam’s 3 Mbit/s starting point. For remote play, evaluate both internet connections and the route between them, because Steam does not publish a universal minimum for that scenario either.
