For a single NFL+ video stream, you need at least 5 Mbps download speed, while NFL recommends 10 Mbps or more for HD. YouTube TV recommends 7 Mbps or more for one HD stream and 13 Mbps or more when other devices share the connection. Those are service recommendations, not guarantees: Wi-Fi interference, congestion, device load and the game’s availability on your service can still cause buffering.
Quick answer: use the target for your service, not a league-wide number
There is no single internet-speed requirement that applies to every live NFL broadcast. The right target changes with the streaming service, picture quality, device, connection type and what else is using your home network.
NFL’s February 18, 2026 support guidance sets the clearest floor for NFL+: 5 Mbps download for video. It recommends 10 Mbps or higher for HD. At less than 5 Mbps, NFL says video may buffer or fall back to audio-only playback. Audio-only NFL+ streaming uses 1–2 Mbps.

YouTube TV publishes different guidance. It recommends at least 7 Mbps for one HD stream and 13 Mbps for reliable HD when other devices are using the network. Its guidance lists 3 Mbps or more for standard-definition video; below 3 Mbps, playback may load slowly or rebuffer.

These figures should be treated as operating targets for the named services and conditions. They are not a promise that every household will receive uninterrupted video at that speed.
Internet-speed targets by service and picture quality
| Service or quality | Published download-speed guidance | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| NFL+ video | 5 Mbps minimum | NFL’s minimum for video streaming; below this, video may buffer or switch to audio-only. |
| NFL+ HD | 10 Mbps or higher | NFL’s recommended target for HD viewing. |
| NFL+ audio-only | 1–2 Mbps | Bandwidth guidance for audio without video. |
| YouTube TV, one HD stream | 7 Mbps or higher | Google’s recommendation for one HD stream. |
| YouTube TV, HD with other devices active | 13 Mbps or higher | Google’s recommendation when other devices share the connection. |
| YouTube TV, standard definition | 3 Mbps or higher | Guidance for SD playback; speeds below 3 Mbps may load slowly or rebuffer. |
| YouTube TV 4K | 25 Mbps or higher | Applies to available 4K programs for 4K Plus subscribers, not to every channel or game. |
| YouTube general 4K UHD guidance | 20 Mbps sustained | Google’s general resolution guidance, separate from YouTube TV’s 4K recommendation. |
| YouTube general 1080p guidance | 5 Mbps sustained | General YouTube guidance for 1080p video, not a specific NFL-service guarantee. |
| YouTube general 720p guidance | 2.5 Mbps sustained | General YouTube guidance for 720p video. |
Do not average these values into a new “NFL speed.” Each number belongs to a particular service, resolution or network-use scenario. A 5 Mbps connection may meet the NFL+ video minimum but fall short of the more comfortable HD target, and it does not satisfy YouTube TV’s 13 Mbps shared-network recommendation.
How much speed should you order for your household?
One television, little other activity
If one device is watching an NFL+ game and other household traffic is minimal, 10 Mbps or more gives you the NFL-recommended HD target. For one HD stream on YouTube TV, use at least 7 Mbps, but a faster plan leaves more room for normal fluctuations and background traffic.

One game while the home network is busy
If phones, computers, game consoles, cameras or other televisions are active during the game, YouTube TV’s published target is 13 Mbps or more for reliable HD. NFL+ does not publish a separate shared-household number in the cited guidance; use its 10 Mbps HD recommendation as a floor for the stream itself and account for the rest of the household’s use separately.
A speed-test result is the capacity available at that moment, not a reservation made for the television. Large downloads, cloud backups, software updates and additional video streams can consume capacity after the test finishes.
Watching in 4K
4K requires more sustained bandwidth than HD, and availability is conditional. YouTube TV lists 25 Mbps or more for 4K on available programs for 4K Plus subscribers. Google’s general YouTube guide lists 20 Mbps sustained for 4K UHD. Neither figure means that every NFL game is delivered in 4K, and NFL+’s stated quality ceiling is up to 1080p rather than 4K.

NFL+ picture quality and game availability matter as much as speed
NFL says NFL+ is offered up to 1080p at 30 or 60 frames per second as “Best Available,” depending on the network and the device’s capability. Your connection can be fast enough while the device, app or network conditions limit the delivered quality.
The service and your location also determine whether the game is available. NFL says NFL+ live local and nationally televised games are available on phones and tablets. Connected-TV and desktop access may require a login from a cable or streaming provider. Out-of-market Sunday afternoon games require NFL Sunday Ticket. Broadcast restrictions, location and subscription status can therefore prevent access even when your speed is sufficient.

Before troubleshooting bandwidth, confirm that the game is included in your plan and that you are using a supported device and viewing route. A rights or device restriction is not a speed problem.
Why a fast connection can still buffer
- Wi-Fi signal quality: The measured service speed may be high at the router but substantially lower at the television or mobile device because of distance, walls or interference.
- Network congestion: Other household streams, downloads and backups compete with the game. Congestion can occur inside your home or upstream from your provider.
- Device or CPU load: NFL’s troubleshooting guidance identifies CPU usage and local software conflicts as possible causes of poor playback.
- App and browser conditions: A stalled app, overloaded browser session or background process can disrupt video independently of the internet plan.
- Service-side variation: Published speed figures describe recommended conditions, not a guarantee against every platform or delivery issue.
That is why a speed test taken next to the router should not be the only evidence. Test near the actual viewing device, during the period when the game normally buffers, and compare wired and Wi-Fi results when possible.
Step-by-step: test and improve your live stream
- Check the subscription and game route. Verify that the game is available through NFL+, YouTube TV or your selected provider in your location, and confirm that your device is supported. For NFL+, note whether you are using a phone, tablet, connected TV or desktop, because access requirements differ.
- Run a download-speed test at the viewing location. Test with the television, streaming box or computer connected as it normally is. Repeat while other household devices are active if that reflects typical game-day use.
- Compare the result with the service target. For NFL+, 5 Mbps is the video minimum and 10 Mbps or more is the HD recommendation. For YouTube TV, compare against 7 Mbps for one HD stream or 13 Mbps when other devices share the network. Treat 4K figures as separate, conditional targets.
- Pause competing traffic. Stop large downloads, cloud backups and unnecessary streams. Close apps or devices that are consuming the connection, then test playback again.
- Improve the local Wi-Fi path. Move the viewing device closer to the router or reduce obstructions. A strong internet plan cannot correct a weak wireless link at the television.
- Restart the equipment. Restart the modem, router and viewing device, then reopen the streaming app. This can clear a temporary network or software state but does not increase the subscribed speed.
- Try a wired connection. If both the router and viewing device have compatible ports, connect them with an Ethernet cable and replay the same portion of the game. This is a diagnostic comparison for local Wi-Fi reliability, not a substitute for adequate internet service and not a guaranteed cure.
- Check the device and app. Install available app or system updates, close unnecessary programs and retry. NFL specifically notes device load, CPU usage and local software or network conflicts as potential causes.
- Reduce quality only when necessary. If the service allows a lower resolution, moving from 1080p to 720p or standard definition can reduce bandwidth demand. This changes picture quality; it does not resolve an unavailable game or an account restriction.
How to interpret common symptoms
| Symptom | Most useful first check | Likely direction |
|---|---|---|
| Video buffers and then resumes | Test near the device while stopping other traffic. | Insufficient available bandwidth, Wi-Fi loss or congestion. |
| Picture drops to audio-only on NFL+ | Check whether download speed is below 5 Mbps. | NFL identifies below-5-Mbps video conditions as a possible cause. |
| Only one television has trouble | Compare that device’s Wi-Fi signal with a wired test. | Local wireless, device or software issue is more likely than a whole-service outage. |
| Every device slows during the game | Repeat the test with household traffic active. | Network congestion or inadequate available capacity. |
| The stream is unavailable rather than buffering | Check location, subscription and broadcast restrictions. | Rights or access limitation, not necessarily an internet-speed problem. |
| 4K option is missing | Confirm the program, subscription and device support. | 4K is offered only on available programs and requires the applicable plan. |
What speed is enough in practical terms?
For a single HD NFL viewing session, a measured 10 Mbps or higher is a sensible NFL+ target, while YouTube TV’s one-stream guidance starts at 7 Mbps. If the household will be online at the same time, 13 Mbps or higher matches YouTube TV’s published shared-use HD recommendation. These are minimum planning points, not a guarantee of perfect playback.

For 4K, use the service-specific 25 Mbps YouTube TV figure when the program is actually offered in 4K, and remember that NFL+ describes its best available quality as up to 1080p. If your test barely reaches a published minimum, expect less resilience when Wi-Fi conditions or household traffic change.
Bottom line for game day
Start with the service you will use. NFL+ requires 5 Mbps for video and recommends 10 Mbps or more for HD; YouTube TV recommends 7 Mbps for one HD stream and 13 Mbps when other devices share the connection. Verify that the game is available on your plan and device, test speed at the viewing location, reduce competing traffic and compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection if playback is unstable. No published number guarantees uninterrupted live NFL streaming in every household.
