Plan for at least 500 Mbps if “quickly” means about half an hour, and 1 Gbps if you want roughly 16 minutes under ideal conditions. Those figures are based on a 120 GB planning estimate, not an official file size. Rockstar has not published the final GTA VI download size for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, so actual times could be shorter or longer. At the same estimate, a 100 Mbps connection takes about 2 hours 40 minutes in ideal arithmetic.
The short answer: choose 500 Mbps or faster
For a hypothetical 120 GB GTA 6 download, the useful speed thresholds are:
- 100 Mbps: approximately 2 hours 40 minutes in idealized calculations.
- 500 Mbps: approximately 32 minutes.
- 1,000 Mbps (1 Gbps): approximately 16 minutes.
Therefore, 100 Mbps is enough to download the game, but it is not a quick experience if you are starting close to launch. A 500 Mbps service is the practical target for a roughly half-hour download. A 1 Gbps plan provides more headroom for other people and devices in the home, although no broadband tier can guarantee a fixed completion time when game servers are busy.
These estimates assume the console sustains the advertised throughput for the entire transfer. Real downloads are affected by Rockstar’s delivery servers, internet congestion, Wi-Fi signal quality, other household traffic, console limits and protocol overhead.

GTA 6’s download size is not confirmed yet
Rockstar’s official store listing confirms a November 19, 2026 release and says physical editions include a download code that supports pre-loading from November 12, 2026. The PlayStation Store lists the PS5 version for November 19, and Xbox lists the Series X|S version for the same date. None of those first-party listings provides a final byte-size specification.
The 120 GB number comes from a Uswitch estimate reported by TechRadar in 2026. It is useful for planning your connection, storage and download window, but it is not a Rockstar specification. The installed footprint could differ, and a launch patch could add data after the initial package. Recalculate the estimate when the official store page shows the actual download size.
Estimated download times by connection speed
The following figures reproduce TechRadar’s 2026 table based on the 120 GB Uswitch estimate. They describe ideal arithmetic, not a service-level promise. The times assume the listed sustained download rate and do not include pauses, authentication, installation or updates.

TechRadar also reported a roughly 300 Mbps US average and a 170.2 Mbps UK average in that analysis. Those are market context, not minimum requirements. A household on either average can download the game, but the available launch-day time and competing usage matter as much as the headline number.

How to estimate your own download time
Use the estimate as a planning tool rather than treating it as a countdown. Download providers advertise megabits per second (Mbps), while game sizes are usually shown in gigabytes (GB). A rough conversion for a file of known size is:
time in seconds ≈ file size in gigabits ÷ sustained speed in Mbps × 1,000.
For a 120 GB file, multiplying by eight gives about 960 gigabits. Dividing 960,000 megabits by 100 Mbps produces 9,600 seconds, or 2 hours 40 minutes. At 500 Mbps the same calculation produces 1,920 seconds, or 32 minutes. Actual launchers transfer data in segments and lose some capacity to protocol overhead, so use a buffer rather than planning to the exact minute.

For example, a file 25 percent larger will take approximately 25 percent longer at the same sustained speed; a file 25 percent smaller will take approximately 25 percent less time. The speed table should not be reused unchanged once the official size is known.

Why your real time can be longer than the table
Game-server demand
Thousands or millions of players may request the same files when pre-loading opens or the game launches. The delivery service can throttle individual connections or become temporarily congested. A 1 Gbps home line cannot force a busy server to send at 1 Gbps.
Local and regional congestion
Your internet service may deliver less than its advertised maximum during busy periods. The route between your provider and the game CDN can also add congestion. Run a speed test on the console or a nearby wired computer at the time you plan to download; the measured sustained result is more useful than the package name.
Wi-Fi conditions
Distance, walls, interference from neighboring networks and a crowded 2.4 GHz band can reduce throughput or cause retransmissions. A console that reports a strong signal can still experience variable speed if the access point is overloaded.

Video streaming, cloud backups, work calls, security cameras and other game updates share the same connection. On a 100 Mbps line, a household using 40 Mbps leaves only about 60 Mbps for GTA 6, before overhead. A faster plan helps, but pausing large transfers is often the quickest improvement.

Console and storage activity
The console may decrypt, verify and install data while it downloads. Those operations can make the displayed progress rate appear to pause even when the network is functioning. Keep sufficient free storage for the download and installation process; the final requirement was not published in the first-party listings cited above, so do not assume that a 120 GB download needs exactly 120 GB of free space.
Data caps and plan policies
A 120 GB transfer counts against a capped broadband allowance. Check whether your provider applies a monthly limit, excess charges or reduced speeds after a threshold. If the cap resets near November 19, leave room for patches and normal household use.
Ethernet or Wi-Fi: which is better for the download?
Use a wired Ethernet connection when practical. Broadband expert Max Beckett, quoted by TechRadar, specifically recommends connecting the router directly to a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S with Ethernet to keep speeds consistent. A cable does not increase the speed purchased from your provider, but it removes many variables between the router and console.
Set up a wired connection
- Place the router close enough to the console for a suitable Ethernet cable, preferably Cat6 or better for a durable home run.
- Connect one end to a numbered LAN port on the router and the other to the console’s Ethernet port.
- On PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, choose Set Up Wired LAN, then select Connect.
- On Xbox Series X|S, open Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings. The console should identify the wired connection automatically; run Test network connection.
- Close other downloads and compare the console’s measured speed with a wired speed test. Start the GTA 6 download only after the connection is stable.
When Wi-Fi is the only option
- Use the 5 GHz or 6 GHz network when the console is relatively close to the router; use 2.4 GHz only when range is more important than peak speed.
- Move the router into an open, elevated position rather than inside a cabinet or behind a television.
- Reduce distance and walls between the console and access point. A mesh node near the console can help, but a wireless hop may still be slower than Ethernet.
- Pause other high-bandwidth devices and avoid starting the download while a cloud backup or another game update is running.
Use the pre-load window instead of waiting for launch day
The official store information schedules pre-loading for November 12, 2026, one week before the November 19 launch. Pre-loading is the most important factor for a slower connection: it turns the download into a task you can complete ahead of time rather than a race on release day.

- Keep the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S connected to power and the internet, with automatic updates and downloads enabled if you normally use them.
- Check the console’s free storage before November 12. Leave additional room for installation and a launch update because the final byte requirement was not stated.
- Start the pre-load as soon as your store allows it. On a 100 Mbps connection, reserve at least three hours of uninterrupted network time for a 120 GB estimate; on 50 Mbps, reserve more than five and a half hours.
- Use Ethernet or the most stable Wi-Fi arrangement available, then confirm that the queue shows the game as fully downloaded rather than merely scheduled.
- On November 19, allow time for any day-one patch, verification or installation even if the pre-load completed earlier.
A physical edition does not eliminate the download: Rockstar’s store listing says the disc package contains a download code to support pre-loading. Treat the physical and digital versions as requiring a pre-load plan unless the final packaging details say otherwise.
Choosing a speed tier for your household

Do not upgrade solely because a provider advertises 1 Gbps if your measured speed is already adequate and you can pre-load. An upgrade is most useful when several people need the connection simultaneously, your current line is consistently below the required window, or your plan has restrictive data policies.
If the download is slower than expected
- Check the console’s network test and compare it with a wired test from another device. If both are slow, the issue is likely the service, router or local congestion rather than the game.
- Stop streaming, cloud synchronization and other downloads on every household device.
- Move from Wi-Fi to Ethernet, or move the router and console closer together if cabling is impossible.
- Restart the router and console only after confirming that the download can safely resume; repeated restarts will not fix a congested game server.
- Try again outside the busiest launch-day period. A slower but steady transfer may complete sooner than repeated pauses during a server surge.
- Check the provider’s outage page and data-cap status before ordering a higher tier.
Bottom line for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S owners
No official GTA VI file size has been published in the first-party listings available for the November 19, 2026 release. Using the 120 GB Uswitch estimate reported by TechRadar, 100 Mbps takes about 2 hours 40 minutes, 500 Mbps about 32 minutes and 1 Gbps about 16 minutes under ideal arithmetic. Choose 500 Mbps or faster for a genuinely quick pre-load, connect the console by Ethernet where possible, and start on November 12 rather than waiting for launch day. Recheck the calculation when Rockstar publishes the final size, and leave extra time for server demand, installation and any launch update.
